Spotted at Le Mans today: the one and only BMW X5 Le Mans. Two seats, engine from McLaren F1 GTR race car, but no restrictors so 700bhp from 6.1-litre V12.
@Andrew_Frankel
once driven in it around a damp and foggy Nurburgring by Hans Stuck. Had to remind himself to breathe.
The day Senna died
Where were you 30 years ago tomorrow? If you were A) alive, B) old enough and of a mind to be an Ayrton Senna fan, I have no doubt you’ll be able to recall in an instant the moment you heard the greatest driver of his era had died doing what he did best. It
Absolutely staggering consistency and as good a clue as you’ll find to why
@Max33Verstappen
is so hard to beat. He’s not just as quick as anyone else out there, he’s that quick on every single lap. Apart from when he’s in the pits. Obvs.
So that’s it. Over the last fortnight and 20,000 votes, our 24 greatest
@f1
drivers of all time has become one and you have voted Sir
@LewisHamilton
the greatest F1 we have ever seen. Thanks so much for voting. It was always just some fun, hope you enjoyed it as much as us.
Twenty-four years ago,
@tiff_tv
broke the official record for the fastest average speed by production car around a UK circuit. Driving a McLaren F1 around the 2-mile bowl at Millbrook Proving Ground, he logged an average speed of 195.3mph, peaking at 200.8mph.
Thinking of Gilles who died 39 years ago today, aged just 32. A man of integrity and that rarest of rare things: a racer to his boots but a team player too. In raw talent, approach to racing and results that did no justice to his talent, he was Stirling’s truest successor.
It is with immense sadness that we learned of the passing of Lady Susie Moss. Stirling’s wife, best friend, manager and agent, he was her life and vice-versa. She also lit up every room she entered. Our sincere condolences to their son Elliot and the wider Moss family.
Anyone who ever met, or even heard Henry Hope-Frost will understand why
#fever
is trending today. Impossible to believe it’s three years since his tragic and untimely passing. We hope the fact he is still so missed brings some comfort to his family. Rest well H.
The intergalactically brilliant Murray Walker has died aged 97 and we are all so very much poorer for his passing. Despite his public image, one of the most professional as well as passionate people out sport has ever known. Rest well Murray, and thank you.
Salon Prive at Blenheim Palace today.
Immediate highlight is MST’s Metro 6R4 - a road-legal restomod with a 500bhp 3.0-litre V6, six-speed sequential ’box, carbon fibre panels, AP Racing brakes and optional semi-active suspension.
Prices from around £360,000, we are told.
Give up 30 mins of your bank holiday, get on the iPlayer and watch this tribute from almost every TG presenter who worked with the incomparable Sabine Schmitz. So sad she’s gone but this, rightly, is a fine and proper celebration of a life brilliantly well lived. Congrats to all.
The past and present hosts of
#TopGear
will pay tribute to Sabine Schmitz after the show. Available on
@BBCiPlayer
now, and on
@BBCOne
at 7.30pm on Wednesday 7th April
Chuffed to welcome
@HenryCatchpole
as the first of our contributors to The Intercooler. His experience, skills with word and wheel not to mention his boundless enthusiasm will be invaluable to our little project. Many more to be announced in days to come.
Please welcome Mr
@karunchandhok
to The Intercooler, who will be covering not just F1 for us, but all areas of the sport. Ace driver and pundit he’s also a fab writer with astonishing knowledge across the history of the sport. And an arch enthusiast too.
Bit of a school photo vibe going on here, but what a joy to get The Intercooler’s writing dream team in the same room. Can you name us all? (A small number not present, but there in spirit).
Spent a day last week in this late 3.6-litre, 110k miles Lapis Blue manual rwd 996 Carrera. Lighter than any GT3, really quick, gorgeous steering and £17k buys it all day long. Know you have to take care buying, but get a good one that’s had the motor mods and what a bargain.
We’re just going to put this out there and see how it goes: If Lewis had been in the Red Bull chasing down Max in the Merc, Lewis would still have found a way to win the race. What do you think?
Well this is quite cool…
@JensonButton
‘s Radford 62-2 revealed. Exige underpinnings, up to 500bhp, less than a tonne dry, claimed to be usable daily, just 62 to be make after famed Lotus that inspired its design. Price tba, presumably plenty.
The Peugeot 205 GTI wins the Hot Hatch World Cup! It defeats the Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II in the final. But it was a close run thing, the 205 earning 52% of the vote. Many thanks to the thousands of you who took part by voting in the polls.
So…what’s next?
We're thrilled to announce that
@IanCallum
has joined our team. He hardly needs an introduction, but we’re proud that the man behind such designs as the Aston Martin DB7, DB9 and original Vanquish as well as the Jaguar F-type is going to become one of our writers.
The Intercooler's Hot Hatch World Cup kicks off tomorrow! It'll be staged right here on our Twitter account. By the end of it, you will have declared one hot hatch the greatest of all time.
Our chums at
@autocar
report that the
@VW
Polo is the next small car for the chop as €5000 price hike to meet Euro 7 will make it essentially unsaleable. First Fiesta, now this. What next? Are we watching the slow death of the small affordable car in real time? Feels that way.
Hello from The Intercooler. Until today we were the DriveNation Instagram site. That has changed in name alone, but this is our first time on Twitter and we need your help to build a following, fast! If you like what we do pls RT far and wide and we’ll be able to keep doing it.
We have chosen the Hot Hatch World Cup contenders:
🇫🇷: Peugeot 205GTI
🇩🇪: VW Golf GTI Mk1
🇬🇧: Mini Cooper JCW R53
🇮🇹: Lancia Integrale Evo
🇯🇵: Toyota GR Yaris
🇰🇷: Hyundai i30N
🇪🇸: SEAT Leon Cupra R
🇺🇸 : Ford Focus RS Mk1
Thx for all your votes. Quarters kick off on Boxing Day!
… meanwhile in Germany.
It is impossible to choose a favourite from the infamous Loh Collection, so we will scatter a few of our highlights in a thread.
You will undoubtedly recognise a few legends in the photos, but let us know which catches your eye first.
Lella Lombardi died 29 years ago today, aged just 50. Famed for being the only woman to score a point (0.5 to be precise) in F1, it’s too often forgotten she was successful in Formula Ford, F3 and sports cars. Proper pedaller.
Very sorry to hear that Johnny Dumfries has passed away aged just 62. People forget how quick he was - utterly dominant in British F3 in 1984, like so many others he couldn’t quite cope with being Ayrton Senna’s team mate in F1. And he helped Jaguar win Le Mans in ‘88 too. RIP.
After over 17,500 votes and 14 rounds of qualifying, quarters and semis, 24 drivers are now two, and our quest to find the greatest
@f1
driver of all is almost at an end. The two remaining are both fully deserving of the title, but only one can have it. Let the final begin!
Porsche 993 Turbo spotted.
Apparently, it was Walter Röhrl who first persuaded Porsche to experiment with four-wheel drive for the 911 Turbo. Launched in 1995, this was the result.
Who remembers the Arena Red Porsche UK press car (wearing ‘911 HUL’ plates at the time)?
Today Ti’s
@Andrew_Frankel
and
@TheDanProsser
met for work and without really meaning to appear to have turned up in an absolutely cracking £100k two new car garage. Or can you do better?
The Jekyll and Hyde of
@porsche
992 GT3s. Touring in Gentian blue, clear glass and silver wheels, or full monochromatic Weissach pack GT3 RS. Which one’s for you?
Today we remember the incomparable Sir Stirling Moss, whose fearless skill behind the wheel inspired millions.
Seeing all these legendary cars in this special place fills us with both sadness and joy.
No driver has won a Grand Prix after their 300th participation. Until today. Congratulations to
@LewisHamilton
on the occasion of his 343rd Grand Prix start.
Our first track day is done. Wonderful cars at Thruxton and not a single red flag. But it was the people who made it. No idiots, superb driving, felt just like a great mates day out. If you we there thank you for making such a memorable day. If not, hope to see you next time.
‘The mid-engined TAX GT (Tom’s Aston project X) was to use a modified Jaguar V8 and would be a serious contender to Ferrari.’
In today’s article from the Ti Library,
@IanCallum
remembers the Aston Martin concept cars he created for TWR:
We were delighted to welcome
@MrJamesMay
into the podcast studio for episode 200! We talked about Top Gear, The Grand Tour, the future of motoring and his own cars.
Listen wherever you get your podcasts or watch the episode in full at the link below.
First look at the Totem GT restomod.
Inspired by the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and offered with a choice of two powertrains: a twin-turbo 2.8-litre V6 (up to 750bhp) or a 500bhp electric motor.
This is the EV version, which hits 62mph in 2.9sec and has a range of nearly 300 miles.
What’s your perfect two car garage? Only rules are that between them they have to do everything you both want and need, they have to be new and with a sub £100k combined cost. To get the ball rolling
@Andrew_Frankel
submits these two for your consideration.
We're delighted to say Steve Sutcliffe has become the latest addition to our world-class team of writers. Steve is one of the most highly regarded car reviewers working today – his opinion matters.
You can read more about him in his website bio below.
‘XP1’ F1 LM prototype is another highlight from the McLaren Technology Centre.
One of six road cars, it was promised to Lewis Hamilton by Ron Dennis if he won a second F1 world championship (Lewis left to drive for Mercedes).
BMW M4 CSL breaks cover, 50 years after the first CSL. Power up to 542bhp, weight down by 100kg. Price just short of £129k. 1000 cars, 100 coming to UK. This or a 992 GT3? Assuming you can get one of either. Discuss…
Extraordinary to think Jim Clark would be celebrating his 85th birthday today. The only good thing to be said about his passing 53 years ago is that it really did help change the sport. Drivers realised that if it could happen to him, none of them was safe. What a loss.
Colin Chapman’s last company car has been bought back by Lotus after nearly 40 years. Still only done 11,000 miles. Such a privilege to drive it on the same Hethel track where it was developed all those years ago. More on Ti Insta site tomorrow:
We have already chosen this week’s Wednesday Want, but let’s offer a late pass to this glorious 1972 Lamborghini Jarama S - up for auction with Bonhams tomorrow.
Styling is by Marcello Gandini, with power from a 365bhp NA V12. Oh, and that paint colour is called Pomegranate.
‘It isn’t just modest power that makes the Up GTI such fun, but its very compact dimensions and low weight.’
@TheDanProsser
has bought himself a new car – and is already wondering if less really can be more…
New today on The Intercooler app and website:
So we did it - the entire McLaren Ultimate Series plus the F1 daddy of them all, seen in public together for the very first time.
I say ‘we’ but in fact we owe it all to
@bicesterh
for letting us have pride of place at today’s Sunday Scramble,
@mclarenauto
for trusting us with
Straight from the ‘you couldn’t make it up’ dept, Alfa has had to rename its first EV five days after it was revealed. The Milano is now the Junior. Why? Because you can only call it after somewhere in Italy if it’s built in Italy. Not Poland. How did Ford get away with Torino?
It’s a huge day for us - our app is available to download! Search ‘The Intercooler’ on your App Store or follow the link below. Please help us spread the word!
Whine in the valley 🔊🎶😊
#MercedesBenz
W25 powered by a supercharged straight-eight engine. This Silver Arrow`s supercharger makes an insane sound 👍
🎥 JHank_P
‘Four billion Deutschmarks went into the R&D of the baby Benz, and you can tell. It has big car energy but in a diminutive footprint.’
Making her Ti debut,
@hjwakerley
does some ‘Woman Maths’ with a Mercedes-Benz 190E (in Bornite, of course):
Who’d consider spending a large amount of money restoring a beloved but not very valuable kei car worn thin through rust?
@joannafidalgo
, that’s who.
Read part one on The Intercooler ➡️
The late F1 commentator Murray Walker, right, in 1945, as a 21-year-old tank commander, in the 4th Armoured Brigade.
He had just crossed the Rhine, when who should be bump into, but his dear old dad, left, who was covering the advance for the British newspapers.
Today’s twin test is a rather special one, as we pit the dynamic M3 CSL against the might of the 996 GT3 RS.
Two noughties icons that both produce over 350bhp and weigh less than 1400kg - but which will emerge on top?
@Andrew_Frankel
has his say.
The Zagato AGTZ Twin Tail, is it Alpine art or a French fail?
We are undecided but love to see this kind of creativity. What do you think? Yay or nay? There are no wrong answers.
‘The three early cars seem so simple now, with their naturally aspirated engines, manual transmissions and gadget-lite interiors.’
@Andrew_Frankel
kicks off BMW M5 week with a triple test of the ‘classics’: E28, E34 and E39.
Now live on The Intercooler:
Office of a Le Mans winner. Porsche 962C-006, won in 1987 driven by
@MrDerekBell
HJ Stuck and the late Al Holbert. Owned by the Porsche factory ever since. To drive one of the most extraordinary devices ever created.
Our Wednesday Want is this Volkswagen Lupo GTI, up for auction now via Bonhams Cars.
A relatively rare budget hot hatch, with a peppy 123bhp 16-valve engine, nimble handling, GTI styling cues and 68,000 miles on the clock.
Don’t you just love little details like this? This McLaren F1 (chassis 43) was specified by the owner to match his road car, a two-tone Blue Black Metallic R129 SL.
Magic.
The Nürburgring has lost its most famous female racing driver.
Sabine Schmitz passed away far too early after a long illness. We will miss her and her cheerful nature. Rest in peace Sabine!
Remembering Jim Clark who left us 53 years ago today. In the history of motor racing his win to start ratio is bettered only by Fangio and
@LewisHamilton
. He was only 32 and arguably still getting better. What a loss.
Interesting
@VW
is fast tracking the ID.3 facelift and, get this, reintroducing hard buttons. It’s almost as if it’s realised its software was so woeful it was a reason by itself not to buy the car, sacked the boss and started again. Still, fair play for not sticking head in sand
Fabulous to see three T.50s in build at
@PlanetGMA
today. Just look at the machining of that
@BremboBrakes
caliper. Saves 800g per car. Chat with Gordon Murray as interesting and insightful as ever.
Our Wednesday Want is this 1994 Ferrari 456 GT.
Perhaps the perfect spec: Le Mans Blue with beige leather and (of course) the open-gate manual gearbox.
Yours for a ‘buy it now’ price of £40,000 via Bonhams Cars:
Something very special is coming to The Intercooler this week.
On Thursday morning, we’ll publish our world-exclusive group test of Ferrari’s ultimate V12-powered road cars: 599 GTO, F12 tdf and 812 Competizione.
One car was largely as expected, two were anything but…
Many congratulations to
@LandoNorris
on a maiden Grand Prix win! The most significant thing here, of course, is that Bristol now has an F1 winner. Terribly important to those of us from the West Country. DP
