My family moved to the US when I was 5. My parents, then in their late 20s and early 30s spoke zero English and started from scratch. As I talk to my dad about med school graduation, he tells me he's now living his American dream 😭😭❤️

My mentor emails me offering to review my personal statement, mails me a stethoscope charm with my initial for good luck, and constantly checks in to make sure everything is going okay. SUPER grateful.

Mentors- There is literally nothing students need/ appreciate more than when Attendings/PIs take the time to ask you about your goals and point you in the right direction. We, students, realize how busy you are, and these moments are such breaths of fresh air

Pretty wild to reflect on how much sacrifice has led up to these moments. Many of us have probably lost ourselves a bit in the process missed out on many moments with friends/families/partners and had long sleepless nights. Be proud of yourself today.

Do you know why I love EM? The people. PDs you meet, across the trail, reach out to check in post-match and are incredibly encouraging, even if you do not end up at their program.

One thing that has really stuck with me during my FM rotation is how much FM physicians are underappreciated (especially by the teams they consult). I have learned so much more than I expected in these last 3 weeks, and hope to see this specialty flourish in the future

My parents are visiting me this weekend and came bearing some gifts: they brought 6 bags of Greek Coffee, a komboskini, a literal GOAT that they are now cooking in my oven oh, and a reminder to workout because I gained a few lbs...ohhhh immigrant parent problems :)

Its awful- especially b/c the dedicated period varies across the board for schools. I know some students that have 5-6 weeks to study for it, I have no dedicated period at all... and then others have had the last 2 months to do virtual electives. Lots of confounding factors.

At my parent's house for the next 2 weeks and my mom silently knocks on my door every few hours to make sure I'm eating with little sliced up fruit.... there's just something to these immigrant parent fruit bowl deliveries man >>

Oh yes! As an IMG I've had to fight for every research experience, and receive tons of "No". When residency programs judge students solely by institutional name, they may be overlooking factors impacting a 19-20-year-old med applicant, which arent always predictive a decade later

I echo this- if your application is "fixable" meaning all you need to do is retake your MCAT, take a year off, do an SMP, weigh out better options! It gets trickier however, when things are related to GPA (which can take years of tuition and work to MAYBE increase).
Every now and again I get a DM from a premed asking if they should go to medical school in the Caribbean.
Only you can decide what’s best for you. But before you make that decision, make sure you know what you’re getting into.

Just saw a child psych patient on FM who I tried to get to open up- he eventually told me he doesn’t do hand shakes he does dabs. Dabbed him up. Told me it was horrible and laughed when I told him I’m from NY ✌️😅

I've had an overwhelming feeling of gratitude these last few days for health. We get so caught up in this rat race that we often forget how much of a blessing it is to just be healthy. Be patient with your patients, friends/families who may be having a difficult time.

(2/2) The real problem is medicine still has tons of stigma + hierarchy. Many still view US MDs as superior to US DOs, then US IMGs and Non-US IMGs. The reality is, the academic institution doesn't define the resident a student will become but it gives them clout

Idk where all the IMG/FMG stigma comes from, but I have the utmost respect for the physicians I have worked with since moving to Miami who are reapplying/restarting residency after full-blown careers in their home country

I used mostly U-world but also really hitting the NBME content is sooo helpful (just re-do all the CMS forms and the full length NBMEs) because there are some diff in 1st line tx between u-world and NBME

I felt awful after Step 1, its super normal to- All I could talk about after was how I thought the dead bird I saw walking into prometric was some morbid sign and I was donezo- but everyone feels bad! Relax tonight so your mind feels sharp tomorrow and you'll kill it! Good luck

It is actually not about perspective, you are putting REAL patients in harms way who are vulnerable, and looking for any way to better understand their diagnosis. They can't just sprinkle fairy dust on their cancer, and hope it goes away.
