What's the biggest mistake you've ever made at work? I once accidentally erased a section of the master tape for a Radio 4 Afternoon Play. It still haunts me.
Spike Milligan would have been 100, today - which gives me reason enough got post this, again. I had asked him (at 18) how to be rich and famous. His reply …
#Spike100
I also took the piss out of a guest who was waiting to go on air - I flicked a switch I *thought* would link me to a colleague in the next studio ... but I spoke into the headphones of the guest who was down the line, somewhere.
BBC Radio 4 will be re-running this conversation between June W and Joanna L, today at 1.30pm.
It’s a lovely programme we made to celebrate June’s 90th birthday in 2015. My thanks to
@BBCRadio4
for remembering it.
Last night I had the pleasure of making another show with the BBC Symphony Orchestra this time with the extraordinary
@neilhimself
,
@amandapalmer
& special guest (I’m allowed to mention him, now) David Tennant. Full show is on R3 on 23 Dec, with an edit for R4 on Xmas Morning.
Children of the 80s: Did anyone else “bake” certain crisp packets (Wotsits?)to turn them into key fobs? They sort of shrank when they were put in the oven. It can’t have been just my school ... can it?
The second part of the Neil Gaiman (
@neilhimself
) and BBC Symphony Orchestra event *with added DAVID TENNANT* is on New Year’s Day afternoon on
@BBCRadio4
. It’s a corking listen!
Watching the presser ... I simply cannot see what anyone *ever* saw in Boris Johnson as a leader, communicator, politician or “character”.
He’s simply a columnist way out of his depth
I know it’s boring for anyone outside Wales (I’ve had this confirmed by the producer of HIGNFY who told me to “bore off” when I highlighted it) but pronouncing Llandudno even vaguely right, especially on
#BBCnews10
matters to many. There’s a whole pronunciation department at BBC.
Here’s a curious fact about Roy Hudd that not many know. He trained as a graphic artist before going pro as a comic and designed the iconic S logo of Schwartz spices.
Absolutely blown away to be announcing this. We need you (and/or your friends & family) to be part of this new show for
@bbcsounds
and
@bbcradio4
starring
@MarianKeyes
and
#TaraFlynn
.

Just got in from seeing Jodie Comer in Prima Facie via
@NTLive
. Very rarely have I ben left utterly speechless after a theatrical event; even one via a screen. Such extraordinary writing, staging and a frankly staggering performance. Should be shown to every 16+ in every school.
Family delighted for The Girl, having confirmed her place to read Philosophy & Theology at Oxford, this morning.
Amazing young woman - amazing achievement - we're all so happy and proud for her. 🍾
I’ve been trying to avoid engaging with all this, today. Until I saw this.
The BBC is there for everyone.
Different people with different interests. Everyone is not just you.
And the answer to your question is yes.
Paying tax bill. Online banking stops me, mid-click and asks "are you absolutely sure you're not transferring money to fraudsters?"
Well... now you come to mention it....
A very sad day. I had the pleasure of working with June Whitfield as a radio producer over a number of years at R2 & R4 - most recently a tribute series for her 90th birthday, 3 years ago. RIP June. You were the best.
Being lectured by the Guardian about journalism is like being lectured on brain damage by Love Island contestants.
There's a reason nobody reads your paper - m8.
I posted this some weeks ago. This is my beloved aunt. She was diagnosed positive with Covid-19, this morning. She is only one of many thousands - I know - but if you could spare a thought for her and the team caring for her (or a prayer, if so inclined) I'd be grateful. Thanks.
My aunt is in care as she has Alzheimer’s. My mum usually visits her every day. The brilliant staff are doing everything they can to keep them in touch during lockdown. This really moved me (and they said I could share it). My thanks to the team in Coventry.
Interesting insight from a Tory MP on
@BBCr4today
(I didn’t catch his name): he’s only doing it to get the strong ending he needs for The Autobiography and/or the US after-dinner speech circuit.
Forgive a moment’s happy-parent-time. My son (13) made these out of some card, from scratch. No kit, no nothing. I’m inordinately proud of him.
(Coins for scale)
If you’re not watching the Northern Soul Prom on BBC2, you’re missing an absolute treat. I’ve listened to the Radio 3 broadcast 4 times and the tv adds a very different atmosphere. Brilliant. Bravo
@StuartMaconie
and all involved.
Yesterday I was accused of "blowing my own trumpet" for mentioning, essentially, what I do for a living. Well [BLOWS TRUMPET] this is on the new electric
@BBCRadio4
tonight. So there.
This is sad news - I loved Kelly Monteith, when I was a kid. He had a series buried away on BBC 2, midweek, mid-evening. A sort of a stand-up/sitcom cross-over before we had cross-overs.
Kelly Monteith has passed away! A few years ago I said in an interview that, along with Morecambe and Wise, Tommy Cooper and my father, he was one of my favourite comedians. He heard about it, got in contact and thanked me. It's sad that many won't know of him.
#RIPKellyMonteith
Trump on a Bike,
@TheDailyShow
- this is a total
@MrMichaelSpicer
rip off. He's done it on Corden, for God's sake. And you may be aware of "the internet". Not good. Not a good look at all.
There is a move to suggest Channel 4 names its new Leeds HQ after the late Richard Whiteley: a proud Yorkshireman and first person to appear on the channel. I support this!
I said I wouldn't complain about
@BBCSounds
anymore, but I've just read they're closing down iPlayer Radio in the coming weeks. Sounds. Is. Still. Not. Ready.
Please stop calling him Boris. It’s all part of his carefully constructed ‘brand identity’. I regret to say I have looked him in the eye. Nothing about him is sincere nor honest.
Polite notice: It’s a fine-toothed comb (a comb with fine teeth) not a fine toothcomb (whatever a toothcomb might be). Please stop getting it wrong. Cheers. Steve x
@NickyHorne
That's like when Kenny Everett introduced news reader Peter Jefferson as "with the news, up in his airplane" (as in Jefferson Airplane - it was the mid 70s) and the first story was ... a plane crash. Peter told me that, himself. Said there were ... repercussions!
Oh! Hey, Hi, how are ya? If you're one of those people whose radio consumption is influenced by social media (and WHO ISN'T?) then may I mention episode 2 of the new series of Meet David Sedaris is on
@BBCRadio4
at 6.30 tonight. Bye now.
