My 6th grader missed the bus. He said he could walk to school a 1/4 mile away. His path was wide sidewalks and one instance where he had to cross a somewhat busy road with a crosswalk and stop light. I received calls from 2 different sets of parents concerned about his safety. 🙄

Car drivers are making life more and more difficult for car drivers. It doesn’t take people an hour to drive 10 miles because too many cyclists are on the road. Plus, people don’t usually die when a cyclist runs a red light.

I’m allowed to care for a max 10 preschoolers who can walk, go to the bathroom by themselves, feed themselves, and get whatever toys/art supplies/clothing they need at a moments notice. Maybe those in positions of authority can look at early childhood ratios for a better model.

We’ve been dealing with this in Oregon for the last 10 years. The smell of smoke triggers the fight or flight response. So the important thing is to not act like this is normal. Don’t panic, tho. Keep children home if you can. Do not expect them to learn much at school.
