My third book, winner of the Blue Lynx Prize, is up on the publisher website! I hope y’all add it to your 2024 reading list! I’m so excited for all the books coming out this year!
My nine-year-old showed me her dedication in the book she’s writing, and I think this might be the best thing to ever happen in my writing /mothering career 😭😭😭
Now that my kid is in high school, I’m trying to be his silent sideline support system, but last night he told me his English teacher is making him put 2 spaces after a period, and HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO NOT INTERVENE?!?
I say this a lot, but stop making emerging writer contests based on age. You are leaving out non-traditional students, parents, people who spend their youth working against cycles of poverty-- and Sharon Olds, who pubbed her first book at 37.
I read my kid this poem in the car yesterday when he said he misses his dad when he's here and misses me when he's there. Thank you,
@adalimon
. You've done so much for literally all of us.
AWP would not refund my registration, even though my dad just died of COVID, but they did give me virtual registration--so I'll be over here trying to pay attention to some panels in the dress I bought to impress you all, while taking care of my 3 kids. 😭
#theyneedabetterpolicy
My father died today. He wasn’t the best father, but he was mine. I’m here cleaning it all up. Idk what to say now, but here’s us in better times. Love to you wherever you are.
I'm a hair away from 40 & just now emerging, which makes me sad I'll never get to be a young/hot/cool new poet---BUT, I'm surrounded by love, my life situation is stable. That wouldn't have been true at 25. If you're worried about timelines--here's a reason to let that shit go.
@napsrequired
Yes, this is such an important point! When I edit and see this, I automatically assume it's a much older person! This could hurt him in certain spaces, like applications, etc.
I don't even know how to say this, but my 2nd full length book (well, actually the 1st I wrote) has won
@CiderPressRev
's Editors Prize. I will have two full lengths in the world. All while mothering 3. I'm feeling so much joy. It's been a long road.
"I celebrate myself and sing myself" I'm a housewife mom of 3. Still, this year I managed to win 2 full length poetry manuscript contests, be a finalist for the National Poetry Series, publish 27 poems in journals, and have 2 poems nominated for Pushcarts, 3 for Best New Poets.
That feeling when you just found out you won a BIG MONEY award for your new Annie Oakley poems, but you literally can't finish reading the email because your kids are fussy as crap and crawling on your face. I WONNNN! I know I'm being vague, more details later!
Question as I read contest submissions: is garamound a secret writer code? Does it really set a submission apart? I am seeing a lot of garamound and to be honest, the garamound IS connected to good poems. I hate garamound and use TNR, but I will switch if it's a THING, lol.
I read that Age Gap mess and feel very sorry for women who think their prime is early 20s. I was dumb as hell and looked 12 then. I was/am hottest in my 30s/now. Don’t internalize that bullshit, younger women. We don’t expire, and we don’t want men who think that we do.
@LeahKonen
Oh god yes, those people saying baby eats every 2-4 hrs have never been shut in a house with a real nursing baby. Can't wait for your book! I loved this realistic element of
@finejuli
's The Upstairs House (and
@nancy_reddy
's Pocket Universe is also so frank about breastfeeding!
Ok, so my GREAT news is that Red Bird Chapbooks will be publishing my chap Tumbling After, which is about navigating a split and shared parenting! SO EXCITED! Rewarding myself by letting my kids have a ton of screen time and ordering pizza (Covid equivalent of free time for moms)
It’s official! I am so happy to tell you all that my book on the life of Annie Oakley, on gun violence and white supremacy in America, on the gun violence in my own family, has officially won the blue lynx prize from
@LynxHousePress
. I am exceedingly humbled and grateful! 🎉🥰
Yes I did publish 2 full length books this yr, & yes that is a flex, but dammit, I'm a nobody mom of 3 & this was my YEAR. Celebrate--especially if people don't think you should. So many old and new friends on this list. Poetry is everything.
In North Carolina, on a golf course, a man told my Vietnamese step father "you wouldn't even be here if Robert E Lee had won." Right now. In 2020 with all our talk about better worlds. The racists are EMBOLDENED, y'all. We know this, but GOD, wtf.
#burnthemdown
Wrote a poem 3 yrs ago that wasn't right. There was a hole in it I couldn't find. I DEEP revised it this week, adding in a new layer (the present), then sent it back out --it just got one of my fastest acceptances ever--3 day acceptance for 3 years of work. Revision takes time.
Everyone, I can't believe I'm typing this, but I have four poems in
@WaxwingMag
alongside poets who FLOOR me,
@SundressErin
,
@poetleslie
, Kate Gaskin, Allison Adair. Pinch me, plz.
Wish our little journal a happy 21st birthday by checking out some incredible reads, and maybe a drink. Congrats to our talented contributors, this is one of our best yet.
It's stunning to me how overwhelmingly generous writers I admire have been to blurb me, to review me, to interview me, to support me. Friends, if you need someone to do the same for you, I'd be so happy to pay this forward. This community/ generation of poets is incredible.
Big announcement from
@driftwoodpress
!! I am so proud to be taking over as managing Poetry editor, though I will miss Jerrod, whose belief in my work continues to be life-changing for me! If you have work to send, please send it my way!
It seems like now, so near the release of her new album with poet in the title,
@taylorswift13
could very easily save poetry small presses. It’d be a great marketing move

#torturedpoets
My poetry dream was to win a contest & be blurbed by my favorite poets, women who inspire me with their work & lives (
@maggiesmithpoet
,
@nancy_reddy
@jessicalgjacobs
). It has 100% come true. I don't even know what to do with myself now. Preorder here:
COVER REVEAL TIME! My book on the origins of gun worship in America, the gun violence in my own family, and, most of all ANNIE OAKLEY won the Blue Lynx Prize and will be out in February from
@LynxHousePress
. (1)
What's the weirdest/wrongest thing a peer told you in a workshop? Something you always remember with annoyance when you see/do it? Someone told me once I shouldn't put colors in a poem, and I still can't figure out why/who hurt this person with color.
Y'all, I was a model for my friend
@ErinSchmerr
, who is an amazing photographer (she has been in Vogue!). Well she styled me as Proserpina and made me look like a DAMN PAINTING. SHOULD I USE THIS AS AN AUTHOR PIC?!?
I have the same lineage & upbringing as 🤮, & a book with hillbilly in the title, so naturally a ton of people texted me wtf yesterday. Here’s an interview I did with
@AlisonStine
&
@Salon
which explains some. He sucks. He’s always been scheming for this 😭
Huge news! The results for our latest Poetry Collections Reading Period is in, and we're publishing not one—not two—but three fantastic collections! We're also now considering more collections, so get on over to the website to submit yours!
If you really want to feel like a famous person, go guest teach poetry at an elementary school. There was a line out the door for my autograph 😂😂😂
#adorable
I have a tweet that is BLOWING up. Someone needs to please take my phone away so I stop trying to explain myself to every aggressive man on the internet 😂😭
Acceptance from dream journal
@IHLR
after several near misses. Will be in the Bliss issue. Somehow, I wrote bliss! Let's hope 2022 will bring nothing but.
@ambernoelle
As the primary caregiver for my 3 kids, I struggle to fight for creative time. Each prize I've won made me feel justified and validated, like I have a gift to honor, especially in those times I've felt like none of it matters/pesky mom-guilt. They're proof it sometimes pays off.
I spent over a yr writing a full heroic sonnet crown about god/gender/climate called "I'll Wear This Crown for the Ruined World". It's in strict form, 15 sonnets, 10 syllable lines, all of it. It got so many finalist nods and almosts, & was JUST picked up by
@still_journal
😭🎉🙏
Today is my birthday! I woke up to a 2 poem acceptance from a journal I've been sending to since 2018. I'm in tropical storm Debby still, and I'm OLD now, but the future looks totally bright all around.
I’m here on a self made mini retreat to remind you: if you’re a creative and a primary caretaker, step away and take time for yourself and your art (and state park lodges are a perfect and affordable way to do that!)
Twitter, my bestie
@noel_christen
took some photos of me and I am IN LOVE WITH THEM! I look like the forest witch I imagine I am. Which one should I use on my website/author photo?
This day last yr, my aunt called to tell me my dad was intubated. He died in the morning when I was frantically trying to drive to say goodbye. It's fresh, also distant. COVID is a horrible virus. We had a complicated relationship, but I did love him. Here he is with my son.
Is there anything that makes you want to stop teaching more than AI? I am not spending my one wild and precious life giving revision feedback to a computer.
Anyone else feeling almost delusional sense of pride when returning a book early to Libby? You’re welcome for this bountiful gift, four people who are waiting on a copy of the book I just finished.
I never in 1 million years imagined that this would be me, but I’m also so proud of this award, and of
@nkuedu
for being such an excellent place for me, and for recognizing their employees, even part time employees like me 🥰
We are so proud to announce that Professor Sara Moore Wagner has been selected as the recipient of NKU's Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Award for 2023! This is a very prestigious honor, one recognizing her amazing work and dedication. Congrats, Sara!
I love you, journals, but I will never get why you open submissions again when you haven't responded to the previous period. It's like I tell my kids at the holidays--you can't get new toys unless you figure out how to clean sort/donate the old ones you don't want anymore.
#chaos
Oh just my name on the cover of the ARCs of my book from
@driftwoodpress
. My kid's face says literally everything I feel rn. It's been a long road, & just wow--I think I have one extra copy I can send out (
@PineStatePub
is collecting addresses, too!), if you want to review, lmk!
I already said one thing, but I’ll say another. I write some really angry housewife poems, & my husband sits beaming in the front row at every reading, regardless of what the audience might think of him by the end of it. He understands the idea of speaker and puts aside his ego.
Plz send heartwarming stories of straight male partners supporting your creative endeavors. Hungry for a story that isn't "I achieved unprecedented professional success and my relationship was never the same."
Deeply enjoyed Judas Goat by
@GabrielleBates
(title poem here). Such gorgeous words and ache and references to the mother Brigit Pegeen Kelly who also shines in this collection!! 🐐❤️
I would like to give
@CynthiaMHoffman
a standing ovation for this book. It is exquisitely crafted, deeply relatable, and so incredibly strange. I love these poems. They made me feel seen, they made me see. Gorgeous gorgeous.
Today I told my students they get extra credit if they dress as metaphors. I'm one from a poem I know we all know/love--can you guess? And yes I have gotten a lot of looks from the "cool" kids around campus.
Friends, give yourself permission to rent a hotel/lodge room and DIY a writing retreat, especially if you're a mom/primary care giver.
@noel_christen
and I wrote well over a dozen poems combined, & we had a small space to feel like artists again. Here's our lakeside communion.
Y’all. She played raspberry swirl, and take to the sky, and bouncing off of clouds, and black dove, and amber waves for the first time and and and 😭😭😭😭

It's the New Year. If you're curious about either of my debut 2022 collections, I'll leave this here. I'm not a salesperson (hate it!), but if you're planning classes, connecting with students is my favorite. I'd be happy to donate time. I'll also be at AWP, if you need a reader!
Day two in Romania with
@NKUEnglish
, and here’s the view of Bucharest from my window! Will be taking students today to meet with the poet
@MonicaCure
, which will be such a phenomenal experience!
#studyabroad
@dlseuss
has her whole hand on the pulse of what I want to do with my own art, what I want to publish at
@driftwoodpress
. She embodies that blend of the personal/intellectual/sound, and that cosmic other thing that makes anyone love poetry. And it's NEW, somehow. Gah!
I hope none of you here lose someone to COVID, but if you do, here's something I didn't know when I was making arrangements: FEMA will pay for funeral arrangements in a death caused by COVID. I wish we didn't all have to tuck this in our pockets, but put it in there, just in case
HOLY SHIT ALL MY DREAMS HAVE COME TRUE! My poetry wife,
@noel_christen
was chosen by
@birdcoatqrtrly
& FUCKING
@TianaClarkPoet
for her BEAUTIFUL BOOK that she wrote a lot of at this very lake where we are having champagne because now it's all
#champagneproblems
, baby! PRAISE HER!
No one prepares you for when an unmarried parent dies without a will. If you have kids and no spouse, make a will, keep your papers together, and don’t give all your shady hillbilly friends keys.

What book do you think every poet should have read? For me, it's probably Song or Diving Into the Wreck. I sometimes hear all the poets talking about a canonical book I've never even heard of, so I'd love to break down whatever limits I have!
I'm celebrating my first book release today, but I've also been humbled lately by two rejections from things I thought I was a shoe in for--because those things were part of my identity. Nothing makes this poetry thing easier. You have to love the work and the work alone.
I'm so proud to have my poem Licentious in
@BarrenMagazine
, and that
@JasonDRamsey
chose it as his editor's pick! Check it out (and the rest of this gorgeous mag!) here:
Since I was 13 yrs old, I I have gotten new
@toriamos
albums the day they're released. I used to stand in line at record stores, now I just pre-order online. One ritual is always the same though, I lay on the floor and listen to it whole. She has been my longest love & influence
Today my daughter wore this necklace to school, and a little girl from the first grade came up to her and said, “I love your necklace, is it a horse butt?” in the most genuine way, and I don’t understand at all how some of you can dislike children 😂
I'm about to scream from the rooftops about the release of my
@driftwoodpress
book Hillbilly Madonna. There are a few amazing reviews and interviews I'll share. I went to college as a single mom, a girl whose mother also went to college as a single mom. This book is everything.
Would you call this the last acceptance of 2022 or the first of 2023? Both? I’m saying both. Thanks to
@SmartishPace
for taking 2 of my Annie Oakley poems. I’m hoping this means the whole manuscript will do big things this year 🤞🎉🎇 Happy New Year!
Do you actually sit up when you write? I have written almost every single poem in my books laying down, usually in a bed, sometimes on the couch. The muse doesn't come to me easily unless I'm fully reclining, and I'm thinking that might be weirder/more normal than I think it is.
I am in physical pain over longing for this dress, and I can't find anything remotely similar. Please, designers and more savvy internet searchers, I need it.
I keep thinking about how my books were finalists 2 yrs in a row for the PANK contest. It’s one thing when there are sketchy vanity presses, or shady presses that you avoid, but these were established names with (mostly) good reputations. They didn’t read like scams (1/2)
If you're a mom who has left your kids for 2 weeks or more for a residency or (in my case) to teach a study abroad (I'll be in Romania for 2 weeks: DREAM job but longest I've been gone), tell me how you dealt with the guilt/ prepped your kids. Also tell me it will be fine.
It’s kind of alarming to say this not even a month after releasing my first book, but the fates aligned for me this year and my second full length is now available for preorder from
@driftwoodpress
This is my childhood book

My author photo for my book about Annie Oakley and the origins of gun worship in America! Me crouching in the same Ohio grasses she’d run through hunting rabbits: she said she was happiest here!
I just saw a tweet where a poet said he's suspicious of cicada poems--well--I humbly submit my love poem disguised as a cicada poem published in the new
@pinchjournal
. I am OVERJOYED and so grateful these editors chose this poem about finding a mate/ mating cicadas. ❤️❤️🪲
