FIRST TWEET: Today I fulfilled a goal that I’ve had since I was a junior in high school. I matched at my number one program

I love ortho so much!!! Last night this both bone came in and I made it go from this ➡️ this. Got some compliments at morning report on the reduction too! 🤩

FIRST D.O. TO MATCH AT PENN SURGERY! First person from her school to match at penn in the history of her school! Hard work and dedication got her here and will take her to high places 🤩 so proud to know you, soon to be Dr. Tidwell!
I start back on ortho joints tomorrow for my last month of intern year and before heading off on my general medical officer tour with the

Bittersweet.
Let’s get it 💪🏻

Today was my last day of intern year and my last day in the OR for awhile as I prepare to head out for my general medical officer tour with the Marines!
It was a bittersweet ending to my time
@WalterReedOrtho
! Thankful for this year and all of the people who made it so special.

What are some MUST have textbooks for residency? I know I probably get them online for free through my institution, but I'm old school and I like to read from books. Looking to start my ortho library! 🦴📚
Today was program orientation day
@WalterReedOrtho
! We got to get fitted for loupes 🤓 and chose our lead (obviously not the ones pictured)! I was like a kid in a candy store and you’d think it was life or death choosing lead color 😂

As a woman in orthopaedics and surgery, I have experienced bias in more ways than one from men and even more unfortunately from other women. However, on
#IWD2022
I am inspired by the strong women around me and those who have paved the way before me. 💪🏻
Thank you

Never too early to start 👊🏻

New co-residents who dat?! Excited to start back up in residency sooner than I thought at
@BalboaOrtho
! Thankful for this opportunity. See you in July!💪🏻

@toxicologist12
I told an anesthesia resident I was going into ortho, he told me how he did 6 ortho aways and so on and then switched to anesthesia. He then told me I should reconsider my specialty choice. My response, “well I already matched into ortho so...” thanks but no thanks. 😅
Ready to start on the hand service come July 1
@BalboaOrtho
thanks to my amazing mentor and friend
@MarvinDingleMD
! Turning me into a hand weenie one book at a time 🤓👋🏻

@AlexisGaskin32
I’m the same for all of the above as well! I think I just find it more interesting that most often people, including my close friends not in medicine think you just go to school and voila you’re a surgeon! Their minds are blown when I tell them about residency and fellowship!
The sad truth of ortho which motivates me even more to kick some 🍑! Privelaged to have the support of so many male mentors. Also, honored to be going to a program that is making en effort to change this, with a 50% female intern class!

CORR® Editor-in-Chief Seth S. Leopold, MD, writes: "Literally every other medical and surgical specialty has overcome this problem to a greater degree than has orthopaedic surgery; we're dead last in gender diversity."

Some medical office policies are insane. The fact that I can’t get a year supply of a medication that I have been stable on for 2 years and instead I have to make an appt every 3 months to see the PA to then get a refill, an appt which I’m charged for is absolutely absurd.
@DoctorLFC
@vikram_90
Also annoyed by this in the states. Allowed to have 5,000 people for opening day of baseball but can’t have a med school graduation where 1 student comes at a time with 2 guests to get hooded and majority are vaccinated. 🙄
I know I chose the right specialty because just when I’m feeling down from clinic days and call I get into the OR and it turns everything around! Awesome morning doing 3 cases
@RadyOrtho

Transitioning from being an orthopaedic intern to essentially an attending as a primary care doctor has been WILD. Lot’s of self doubt, but thankful for mentors like
@MarvinDingleMD
&
@ChrisTuckerMD
who I can consult at any time for help! Thank you both for your guidance.

what are your thoughts on disability and life insurance? Is it important to have starting out as a resident? I feel like this is something I know nothing about but is important.

is this year is the last year all PGY1s will find out about a general medical officer tour. Sending good vibes out into the universe for myself and my colleagues

tomorrow. Hoping we get chosen for a straight through spot! 🤞🏻😬
Good luck to all military applicants! Tomorrow is an exciting day! Take it all in and know that whatever happens is meant to be in the end.

talking about how awesome orthopaedics is with high school students and hearing from some inspirational women

event! Fun to get my hands on some power tools again after being in primary care the last 6 mo! Thx

I am saddened by this. Mostly because whoever these pathetic people are who get to hide behind anonymity may be getting interview invites and possible acceptance into a program which would only allow thee actions to go without consequences. I sincerely hope karma comes for you.
Congratulations to all the

medical students that matched today! We’re so proud of all your hard work and we look forward to seeing you

After almost 2 weeks of residency, I’ve decided the real MVPs of the hospital in July are the pharmacists checking all the interns med orders. I wonder if they dread when July comes around?! 🧐🤨 Them reading intern orders 👇🏻🤣

Best question hands down was what’s my walk out song. Already knew the answer… I have 3 actually! 1. Till I collapse-Eminem 2. All of the lights- Kanye West 3. Levels-Avicii

would always tell patients they are going to hate us for the first 2-4 weeks but that it gets better from there!
Thankful for this ortho camp to refresh my knowledge after a year off as a GMO with the Marines prior to starting residency back up again! Thank you

Today I gave a talk at a women’s symposium for my female Marines and it was quite special and empowering being in a room full of women as their female physician and talking about women’s health.

The amount of people taking this tweet out of context is interesting. Simply wrote this after talking to a friend about how much training I still had left and how she thought I was done and a full blown surgeon already.
It isn’t that serious people.
Congratulations to all the future orthopods who matched this week!

this is the day I forgot my OR shoes so I just wore my heels. 😂

That’s hilarious! I have a pair of jeans that mine hates and every single time we go out, literally every time, I get a compliment on them and I laugh and give him a look of told you so! Men unfortunately don’t know fashuunnn. 🤣🤣
My first mentor. The reason I want to become a team physician and why I am interested in bone health. Thank you for believing in me and helping me achieve my dreams of becoming an orthopaedic surgeon.
I will never forget you. May your memory be eternal. 💚💛
Amazing article and thread.
Change of any type is hard and uncomfortable & although we have come a long way w/ increasing diversity in ortho, we would be remiss if we thought made it.
Choosing diverse applicants is one part, implementing policies to support them 1/2
July 1 2022. Getting to this spot was never easy and has been paved with a tremendous amount of help.
And while (to my knowledge) July 1 was not necessarily planned as the release date - it is tremendously significant as thousands of new doctors start.
THIS!!!!! X1000! I remember how people treat me and how they treat others and I take mental notes of how I will or will not act.
#treatothershowyouwanttobetreated
Great paper sir! Vitamin D deficiency is under recognized and under treated and we all could be doing more to identify these patients and treat accordingly.

what are your thoughts on a pt who tore ACL 1 year ago (not recognized initially due to delayed dx/imaging) & has min functional limitations (they’ve run multiple PFTs/CFTs w/o complication) and done phys therapy, do you operate anyway? What tx do you offer? Pls advise!
When people are calling for consultation it’s because they obviously aren’t the subject matter expert in that field or feel uncomfortable and need another physicians recs. We’re all apart of the same team here and have the same goal to make patients better.
End rant.

Beyond 1000% true. I also experienced this. I feel like it’s even more of a bummer. I’m sorry my friend! You’re a badass and don’t let others bring down your shining light! 🙌🏻
Leadership is a topic that is very important to me. I am always striving to become a better leader. So I was stoked when I learned that our visiting professor, the legendary Dr. Tokish, would be discussing this at grand rounds this morning!
