For those looking for a donation link for Cameron's scholarship fund, here is a link and QR code. Feel free to share.
Cameron loved to travel, and we will be providing a scholarship to allow other young people to develop a love of travel of their own.
@megpillow
I was once riding in the backseat of my teen's car when they got pulled over. The deputy did not realize I was not one of the teens for several minutes, and the way he interacted with them when he thought there were no adults around ... terrifying. Similar.
A gaping hole has been opened in our lives and hearts with the loss of the beautiful boy who made me a mother. Cameron passed away at the age of 24 on Thursday, March 25, 2022. I am very proud of the choice he made to be an organ donor, and I miss him so freaking much already.
@coffeespoonie
This brings something up for me, and I'm not trying to hijack your thread, but I'm curious -- what can people do to make their housekeepers feel more appreciated? My chronic pain makes some household tasks impossible, so I have a cleaning service that comes every two weeks, and
@erin719nyc
I have 100 percent done this with a photo caption on a Saturday when there were no spare eyes around to give it one more look. I feel their horror.

@AtomAtkinson
From his website: "Having been driven from academia as an “eccentric reactionary malcontent,” he depends on the support of his listeners and readers to continue his work." I would very much enjoy attribution on the quote.

If my husband ever leaves me, it is because I insist on giving everyone I see a complicated backstory. I wouldn't stop it if I could.
@the_tweedy
Hahahaha! I never thought of it in that way, and now I'll never be able to see a photo of you without thinking someone probably sent you out for pickles.
Cameron is in the OR for his organ donation now. Please keep those good vibes going so his gifts are able to get to their matches. And thank you so much for all of your kind words.

It's Google's fault -- their crawling algorithm makes it so long articles greatly outweigh short ones, so if they just post the recipe, they won't get seen. The "go to recipe" button is very nice and appreciated as a work around.
@JeromeAdamsMD
My husband, ex-husband, brother, and son-in-law are all named Justin. What we lack in creative names, we make up for in confusion over who is being referenced in basically every conversation.
It was December of 1992 and I was six, and "Aladdin" was in theaters. My sister and I weren't seeing it. My mother couldn't afford the tickets. I remember this because the three of us were sitting in the car and she cried + apologized for not being able to take us. (thread)
@clairecm
I left the newspaper industry and my position as a managing editor because my publisher retired and the new one thought it was ridiculous I had been given flexibility to handle things like this related to my three elementary school children.
@laurenthehough
My 11-year-old daughter says, "Pretty much everyone has a dog but me and that lady." So ... I guess she is volunteering to go to the shelter with you when you are ready.
@DavidBNast
@yashar
This reminds me of the question the school said showed my daughter's thinking was too abstract to be ready to skip a grade. "What is the forest made of?" She said wood. (Then came home and told me how weird they were and how she wasn't sure it was the right place.)
@ambernoelle
I choked on takeout Chinese noodles once a couple of years ago. Now if I cough, there is yelling from several places in the house asking if I am okay. But if I did anything but choke, I'd be on my own.
@laurenthehough
Yesss. I live for those days. My friend's 10-year-old said to me "but women can't marry women, right?" and she's 17 now, but we're still having the conversation.
@cmclymer
That is so weird. Just like when they stormed the Senate yelling "Where the hell is Nancy." So, um, she doesn't spend much time THERE, kids...
@writesloud
@clhubes
Four babies, three cesareans. I worked as a doula for a while because I needed parents to feel supported in any situation after I didn't feel that way.

@everywhereist
The first time I got an electronic car key I had a little internal panic attack -- how can I put those between my fingers to make a weapon out of them? What is this?
@coffeespoonie
I stress about making sure they don't feel as though I have anything but complete appreciation for them. Of course paying a living wage and tipping, but beyond that?
@the_tweedy
Reverse to do lists. Write down tasks I have completed so I can give myself all the gold stars. (I have to keep a regular to do list, too, but I only put big things in it.)
@Amethyst_B12345
@plantpuketattoo
Try taking that into a different context. Say you are a photographer and a newspaper or magazine finds your images on the internet and uses them in their publication because "it's what people do." It's not their fault, right? Because it's what people do?
@sannewman
If I came home from school and this movie or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was on the console, it meant serious cleaning was going on and I should make myself scarce.

American Air staff very clearly state in the boarding announcements that you will be denied future bookings with them if you refuse to wear a mask now. I hope they follow through.

Text from Dad: My phone isn't holding a charge.
Me, 10 questions later: I'm just going to buy you a new phone because I can't with all of this.
A month later I learn my rookie error -- since I bought it, I am 100% responsible for every single one of its quirks and hiccups.
@shutterdove
@EverettMaroon
My husband is a Kiwi, so the stark contrasts have been a frequent topic of conversation with friends and family. It is pretty mind boggling.
@shaindelr
The thing I can't get past is the sentence near the end where he says she might be tired and crabby because of the newborn. That doesn't fit for me.
Normalize spending a week in a house before you buy it. There is a police shooting range 0.9 miles from my house and it sounds like it across the street. I frequently do the math on how much it would cost to move again.
This is fun! An essay I wrote about an unconventional mentor from my childhood (hint: she may or may not have been a sex worker) is published in this collection.
@andizeisler
She feels bad for having said that and wants me to explain that she meant because drug dealers use disposable cell phones. (She adds that she wasn't bullying, she was asking, so now we're having a discussion about that.)
@shaindelr
I've been in this marriage, where he can't handle your success, etc. I lay in bed last night thinking about how that tiny bit of recognition about why she was tires would have felt monumental.
@SaraJBenincasa
I put on crime shows typically. I'll binge one from beginning to end and just keep going back to it because it doesn't require any decision-making on my part. With that said, I could rarely explain more than the plot to you, as I'm not paying that level of attention.
@lyzl
I had a campaign staffer in ND who had lived on both coasts. When we circulated an Applebee's menu to do a takeout order he was adorably in this genre about it, like he was going on an adventure.
@QueerlyAutistic
@the_tweedy
I just had this conversation! Someone told me yesterday that it was really nice that I have a job that allows me to work through when I'm ill, and they caught me at a moment when I needed to be really, really honest about what that looks like.
@MaybeMorque
Oh my goodness. The first time a New Yorker told me something was in walking distance, I didn't know better and nearly died on a 300 mile hike to the train station.
My child, after I pointed out she clearly had not showered yet. "Well have you finished that book yet? Come on mom!"
Totally equivalent. (And also mean, do I sound like that? Must analyze.)
@RealChrisCal
I'm so sorry about your family members. So much all of this. People keep asking if I have plans for my birthday and I'm like ... couch? desk chair? The possibilities.
@laurenthehough
This is the most grown-up piece of furniture I own. It has been dragged all over the country, served as everything from a dresser to a TV stand, and has some crayon art on the top right. It was built by a set dec pal when my then-bf worked in the Vancouver film world 18 yrs ago.
@the_tweedy
If I need motivation, every damn thing goes on the list of completed tasks. It is always far more than I give myself credit for, and that helps with the overwhelm of SO MUCH to do.
