Too many cars are ending up on the sidewalk in Washington DC. Please tweet photos of cars on sidewalks or links about Pedestrians hit by cars on the sidewalk.
@HowardArenstein
So it is your position that drivers should only stop if there is a camera and since your wife didn't know about the camera it was reasonable for her to treat the stop sign like a yield sign & just roll right thru?
@henryzcohen
I would say we had many non car dependent cities at one time but that NY maintained its independence from automobiles the most though even NY made some terrible choices. Most medium & large US cities at one point had very good public transit & were walkable too.
This TikTok is at 1.7million views and a lot of angry, hateful comments. “I was only 2 minutes” “I was just picking up a food order” “I’m not parked” it’s NO STOPPING for a reason, to keep cyclist safe. The sign doesn’t indicate “no stopping except for 2 minutes” $150 x2

Hey

- here is a

Look at all the cyclists that will soon have bike lanes on Connecticut ave

Love it!You are filming with your phone which is illegal in DC (& dangerous), your video shows zero congestion though you did capture a driver fail to stop at a red light at a no RTOR .Know why no one wants to bike in the road - because it is unsafe to share the road with you!
Sorry to share but
@MayorBowser
has lost her courage on Connecticut Avenue bike lanes - unless
@CMFrumin
finds his courage the Avenue is just going to continue being a traffic sewer for MD commuters. So much for Vision Zero & being a world class city.
They haven't been rushing at all - we are 5 years into this process & there have been like 100 public meetings- everyone is exhausted and thought this was settled with the Mayors Dec. 2021 announcement -
@DDOTDCDirector
@CMFrumin
@MayorBowser
why are you dragging this out longer?
D.C. considers revisions to Connecticut Avenue bike lane plan. “We’re not going to rush on this,” DDOT director Everett Lott told the D.C. Council yesterday.
Disappointed that the Mayor references improving downtown for drivers but not bicyclists - cars are the problem not the solution - is there a Western world capital whose main street is a traffic sewer like K Street is?
Bowser is rolling out her promised "Downtown Action Plan" today, calling for $401M in spending over the next five years to boost the area.
Here's a rundown of the proposed investments, but the biggest items are new "cultural districts" and housing:

A long time ago Georgetown was actually a little funky with art house theaters and a neighborhood serving grocery store & a couple of coffee shops and even some cheap cool places to eat but by about 2000 had evolved into a frat house vibe w/ lots of high end chain stores.
@EBJunkies
Are you taking photos while driving? If so that's dangerous & illegal. Taking the lane on a bike, BTW, is completely legal. And no doubt you are too much of a knucklehead to notice the bike is stuck in the same traffic as you.
Just spotted on Facebook a post about someone whose off leash dog bit & injured a cyclist- unsurprisingly they are also a
#weknowwhothebaddriversare
- maybe if this car had been taken of the road this wouldn't have happened.
How did a 2nd DUI arrest in 3 years not net significant jail time - any competent judge knows DC barely does any DUI enforcement- if you were caught twice by MPD you have a serious problem and need some time in jail to think about it.
Walker was similarly charged with driving under the influence in 2018, when she was again found sleeping in her car. She had an open bottle of vodka in the car with her.

And some diners could make the opposite choice and avoid NOVA because they consider it less safe. In any case IIRC sales tax revenue is a tiny part of DC's overall tax revenue.

blocking the sidewalk outside the Jenifer Street entrance to the Friendship Heights Metro is not where your staffer should be parked & the vest on the dash is not a get out of jail free card.

Oh FFS it is clearly the drivers fault- that is a travel lane not a short term parking lane - you are trolling right? The driver even has their hazards on!
Todays car on a DC sidewalk injured 2 peds including a child& revealed a selfish driver, probably unnecessarily, concerned only about themselves:
In Ring camera video, a distressed person can be seen at the scene wailing. "Oh my God... I'm going to jail," they scream at 1 point.
The girl and her father were walking down the street, on their way to the pool, when the driver of a Ford went off the road, striking the man and pinning the little girl, authorities and neighbors said.

@DCPoliceUnion
look at this - a police officer who parks their car, puts down their phone and gets out and walks around and does something!
Enforcement from this past Monday. Opted to not ride my bike as I’ve learned the hard way in these freezing temperatures with a slip and fall off my bike. Nice to switch it up.

completely obstructing a sidewalk and no standing zone enforcement $100/$150 fines

Hey
@AdamTuss
maybe time to go ask
@MassieRitsch
again why he thinks it is outrageous he was ticketed for rolling through stop signs on Blagden and do a balanced story about how ignoring traffic laws has real life consequences?
FWIW driver rolled thru the stop sign at 17 and Blagden. This intersection is super problematic, drivers never properly stop. They also speed down Blagden (and Colorado). In fact, it didn't take long for the inpatient drivers to start honking at the inconvenience of the accident

@chenderson
@charlesallen
about why a car that was eligible for towing only got a relocation tow and was not impounded - you already had this dangerous car on a tow truck! C'mon - be smarter & do better.
@JWPascale
She needs to go - she barely seems to understand the systems she supervises or what the myriad problems are. She mostly sounds like a MD driver concerned their ability to drive recklessly is about to be infringed on.
It is just absolute anarchy on our streets. Stolen cars, car jackings, people overdosing while driving, shootouts & then the endless reckless driving committed continously by most drivers.MPD meanwhile despite most officers per capita has no traffic enforcement division & is MIA.
Very sad and frightening scene in front of Cleveland Park library right now. After a fender-bender, driver and 2 passengers under emergency treatment, unconscious. I suspect drug overdose. Secret Service and
@dcfireems
absolutely heroic.
@MayorBowser
I want the police to legally park their vehicles, turn off the engines, put their phones away and go out and be visible & engaged in my community. All I see are the police parked illegally for hours w/ engine running in out of the way locations with their noses in their phones.
In a 1972 study, Donald Appleyard showed how traffic rates influence social interactions & friendships.
People living on heavy traffic streets;
0.9 Friends
3.1 acquaintances
People living on light traffic streets;
3.0 friends
6.3 acquaintances
Prioritize people over traffic.
This guy has been eligible for towing for almost 3 years and owes DC $6584 and because DC doesn't do a good job of getting these cars of our roads this unchecked driving resulted in this.
#weknowwhothebaddriversare
@TriciaForWard3
Of course that is not true - the entirety of DC is reachable via Metrobus & all DCPS students are eligible for free smart trip cards. And there are even WMATA routes that only exist to serve DC public schools including one that serves your neighborhood.
Seriously - there are drivers who don't know they aren't supposed to park in bus lanes??? More feckless leadership from the Mayor - just start ticketing people!
@BrianneKNadeau
@wmataGM
Another question from
@BrianneKNadeau
: what happened with bus lane enforcement?
@MayorBowser
: it's not about revenue. It's about education and safety. Says an education campaign is slated to start in January.
A DC plated
#weknowwhothebaddriversare
with 3+ year old citations likely means he's been driving with expired tags for at least a couple of years. In a competently run jurisdiction that cares about road safety this car would have been taken off the road by now.
Something seemed odd about this license plate. The very clean letter and numbers, yet oddly faded DC logo.
Checking his unpaid ticket tally was a mere $5,556.

I'm usually pretty militant about this stuff but these guys have a tough job and if these are row houses they really may not have any other options - hopefully they'll try to help by retracting the ramp when they are not unloading? And put out some cones too.
More carnage and another car on the sidewalk in DC -
@marycheh
@charlesallen
if I'm reading this plate correctly this car owes $2280 in unpaid tickets including 6 speeding tickets and failing to show proper tags and has been eligible for towing for more than 2 years.
This particular asshole was driving like a bat out of hell on Independence Ave SW this morning, and as usual got caught up at the same light as us. Presumably they work for the federal gov in some capacity because they drove into a private lot on 7th and Maryland Ave SW.
@PedroYokes
@DCUrbanist
I know! Who cares if working class neighborhoods are livable or have clean air - people from MD need to get into the city and wouldn't deign to take public transportation - that is for the poors!

OMFG - you are kidding me? I hope there is a special place in hell for you. I get that you like to drive everywhere & probably get upset when someone slows you down but everyone should be safe walking in their own neighborhood.

Why is it ridiculous? In most jurisdictions you lose your license if you rack up enough violations - why should DC with its lower car ownership rates & Vision Zero goals have civil only enforcement?
@SierraDC
@VoteMendo
Why is the DC chapter of the Sierra Club so enamored with

If only there was some other way besides driving for MD commuters to get downtown. 🤷♂️

@charlesallen
@Prof_Bruckner
@HowardArenstein
Yes but why do we need to apologize for asking drivers to stop anyhow? It isn't a complex thing for drivers to do and even infra just slows drivers - one point of the stop is drivers are supposed to stop and asses the situation not roll thru & hope intersection is clear.
@AdamTuss
@nbcwashington
I ask this every time you do one of these clickbait stories - have you even once found someone who shared evidence that they were improperly ticketed? Even one driver?
@DCPoliceUnion
You need to rename your handle to DC Police excuses for MPD not doing its job.DC's population has never swelled by a million people in a day & in any case day working swells are even bigger in Chicago & NY so what is your point exactly? I'm sure you can look it up on your phone.
@DCPoliceUnion
@charlesallen
From what I've always understood it is not against the law to remove an illegally placed sign & in DC if you didnt get a public space permit the only place you can legally locate a campaign sign in the public ROW is on a pole which based on the metal stanchions was not the case.
@AdamTuss
@nbcwashington
@AdamTuss
would be great as a reporter if you would actually provide evidence/examples of inappropriate citations.Folks upset about citations does not mean they were improper & the folks organized in opposition to this cam have only shared videos of them running the stop sign.
@j_putnam
@leavitt_palmer

@DDOTDC
What a bonkers thread-are they not standard trees in treebox? The suggestion that DDOT needs to give notice before planting trees is just insane but not as insane as suggesting trees are a public safety issue. Bet this is really about the trees preventing parking on the sidewalk.
@fgmtheatre
@tuckcomatus
IIRC it is about 500 million. But the impunity and fecklessness of our traffic laws is the bigger issue - MD & VA drivers have figured out they can drive however they want on DC streets and never be held accountable.
@MLSist
I'm pretty comfortable betting that I've ridden Metro more in the last week than you have in the last year and your knowledge of its reliability comes from twitter and the news and not any first hand experience.
4 males in a black Nissan Altima with VA temp tags, one armed with a rifle & 3 armed w/ handguns, are going on a robbery spree in DC. The first robbery occurred in the 800 block of Maine Ave SW at the Wharf. The 2nd occurred in the 1300 block of 18th St NW near Dupont Circle.
Good morning
@311DCgov
please send parking enforcement to intersection of Wisconsin & 34th Street NW to ticket (can it be towed?) car completely blocking crosswalk.
@WarrenJWells
I'd add most college campuses and older small towns to the list though maybe people don't travel to them but they chose to live near them because of walkability.
@FeverPotomac
Let's be honest - we are doing a disservice to these young people by looking the other way at their misdeeds for years until they become so severe that we can't & then it's too late for everyone including our young people.

Don't forget that most likely the asphalt in that playground wasn't designed to handle the weight of cars & will end up damaged if this goes on long enough & of course cars are constantly dripping oil & antifreeze & brake fluids & other stuff that should never be on a playground.
Park Police launch massive food truck crackdown in front of African American History museum. Owners say they were given fines between $500-$1,500 and trucks towed instantly. No chance to move.
@scottwongDC
Great - and you are filming a video with your phone while on the GW Parkway which is illegal & dangerous - hopefully you at least waited until you were parked to share it?
@_SydVicious_
Lol - you must not do a lot around the house or regularly visit a hardware store. Most hardware stores don't actually sell construction supplies because they take up too much space and most people don't even work with construction materials with any regularity.

@bikeshare
there are zero bikes at the N. Bethesda station this morning & the only bike at the Jefferson Station has a flat tire. Please get some bikes up here today so those of us in this suburban hell scape can get to our offices quickly.
Seeing a lot of reports of cars being booted the last week so maybe all of our yelling & tweeting about this &

elevating has made a difference - would be fun if people post pictures with the plates to get a sense of how dangerous these cars were & how much they owed.
@Sonyers
@chenderson
Ummm it is during lower volume periods when drivers do the most speeding and cause the most carnage. Would love to know where a 25 MPH speed limit doesn't make sense?
@MotenSpeaks
And we don't live in Houston either- if you want to drive everywhere and have free parking maybe you should move there instead? Hopefully you are aware DC was built around streetcars and walkable neighborhoods not driving?
@Nerd4Cities
Arlington,VA on balance is a good suburb and Silver Spring & Bethesda, MD are practically mini cities now with very good (& improving) public transportation & bike infra.
I've watched this entire DDOT roundtable hearing today - has there been even a single mention of driving while using a hand held device and any enforcement? Am I the only one who thinks that is a major unaddressed safety issue?
I didn't see this in my twitter feed today & no one re-tweeted this story-this AM a speeding driver hit a stopped Metrobus on Southern Ave with such force that the bus then fatally struck a pedestrian.Surprised story didn't mention that the bus wasn't wearing reflective clothing.
Metro police say a metro bus hits and kills a man walking in the road right by the DC Prince Georges County line. Coming up on
