Disciplining the land market means an effective Site Value Tax, discouraging speculation by limiting planning permission durations & introducing specific zoning for affordable housing (ala Kenny report 1979) which ensures no re-zoning windfalls that decrease affordability. 21/22

@IrishTimes The headline should make it clear this article is about cannabis use and dependency by teens as young as 12. If 12 year olds were out drinking unregulated home brew and poitín we’d have more alcohol issues too. Simple solution: legalise, regulate and control access like alcohol.

What was said: HAP is awful housing policy that subsidises private landlords & disincentivizes investment in social & affordable housing. It offers poor value for money for the exchequer & has bloated the rental sector. What they heard: 😤🤬😡 They hate landlords! Ideology! 👇

The "Don't let private landlords get HAP payments" is the welfare equivalent of banning bedsits without knowing what replaces them because "it's a principle". The principle of someone who owns their own home, usually.

It’s simply disingenuous to discuss housing in terms of “choices”. Housing is a basic need. Consistently deregulating the market to “allow” more homes be built doesn’t guarantee more homes are actually built. It has also failed to supply sufficient affordable, quality “choices”.
