At a time when so many people have lost their jobs & funding is needed for front line health & care services I cant accept a wage increase.
I am again returning the full post FEMPI pay restoration & increase (€8188.44) to the exchequer. I am paid more than enough.
Well that was embarrassing. 3 Govt Ministers in chamber didn’t vote for Govt amendment to SF motion on affordable housing. Nor did they vote against the SF motion.
So our proposal to double capital investment to deliver 20,000 homes to meet social & affordable need passed!
Huge thanks to

I have written to the Presidents of UCD, DCU, NUIG, NUM, UL, TCD & UCC requesting meetings to discuss proposed on-campus student rent increases. High rents are a barrier to education. There has to be a better solution to financing of student accommodation.

What happened last night in
#SandwithStreet
is an outrage.
This is racism pure & simple.
Burning the tents of homeless people who have come to Ireland seeking international protection.
This is not who we are as a people. We are better than this.
FF are proposing 100 year social housing leases!
Average annual cost of 25 year leases is €8k
So FF want to pay c€800k to lease a house from a private developer that they could build for €234k
Little wonder FF bankrupted the state when last in power!
Am I seeing things? Is this a joke?
Not a single mention of housing or homelessness in
@FineGael
’s 7 policy tests & 10 specific policies they want a new govt to achieve.
This from journalist who didn’t bother to attend the actual press conference to ask any questions. I’m for a free press. I believe office seekers should be scrutinised. But I also think journalists should do the job they are paid for. Next time turn up John.
#Scarlet4Ya
Today I signed my annual salary increase waiver returning €9443.95 back to the exchequer in 2021.
This is the total value of recent pay restoration & increments for this year. TDs are overpaid as it is. We don’t need this money.
There it is for all to see.
FF/FG/Greens vote for a TAX BREAK for Cuckoo Funds to reward them for snatching up family homes.
This government has turned their back on people, again.
This will be the first budget in the history of the state where private landlords will get more money for rent subsidies than local authorities for building & buying social housing. €806.3m for private landlords vs €789m for Councils.
Fine Gael is providing for a housing budget of €2.63 billion in 2020, an 11% increase on 2019 and the highest investment in housing by any government in a single year.

Yesterday a US military aircraft landed in Baldonnell airport in my constituency.
I have written to the Minister for Defence asking where this plane was travelling to, whether it was carrying weapons & why was in landing here, in a neutral state.
Today I published a Bill to ban co-living. Nobody should pay €1300 pm for 12 sqm. That’s the size of a car parking space
Working people need affordable homes not gentrified tenements
Last year Darragh O’Brien described co living as ‘bonkers’. Now he’s Minister he should ban it
FF/FG/GP have just voted to allow investment funds to continue bulk buy family homes while paying no tax!
Thousands more single people & couples will be denied the chance to own their own home while being forced to pay sky high rents.
Any TD who asks for such an allowance should hang their head in shame.
Sinn Féin Dublin Mid-West TD Mark Ward said that TDs are “paid more than enough” and said that, if anything, TDs should take a pay cut.
@Wardy1916
Embarrassing stuff from
@LeoVaradkar
here
Not only has he slashed income supports for workers while stripping vital protections from renters
Now he’s pretending he doesn’t know the difference between a devolved executive with limited legal/fiscal powers & a sovereign Govt! 🙄
Limited protections brought in by SF North won’t mean no evictions-just have to give notice to quit.Meanwhile SF South promise ban on evictions.
SF North up rents by 3%. SF South call for 3 year freeze.
Why don’t they do what they say they’re going to do when actually in gov?
€16,000 bonus for super junior Ministers!!!
Frontline workers are literally putting their lives on the line in the fight against Covid-19.
Meaanwhile FF, FG and Green Party TDs vote for a €16,000 bonus for Super Junior Ministers. Is this the change you voted for?!
Hi there
@TescoIrl

@SuperValuIRL
Could you lower your online spending limit to €30 to facilitate lower income families & pensioners to avail of this vital service. I have had a number of constituents on to me recently asking that I contact you in relation to this.
#Covid19
Disgraceful! FF/FG/Greens just voted down Sinn Féin's amendments to make sure All homes are protected from vulture funds.
Tonight, this Govt made it clear - it's on the side of vulture funds and leaving ordinary people locked out of home ownership.

To those criticising SF for holding rallies on Govt formation I have to ask:
What is so wrong about including voters in the conversation? Must our engagement with voters stop after polling day?
If you want to be part of the conversation then come along & help shape the future.
FG, FG, GP & some Inds vote confidence in Leo Varadkar.
They have voted for low standards, insider dealing, dig outs for powerful friends & a Govt that is leaving millions of people behind.

Having spent years trashing our ideas for universal healthcare, public childcare & large scale public housing delivery, it seems FF/FG will now propose universal healthcare, public childcare & large scale public housing delivery. But wait, SF aren’t fit for Govt!
@ianknoxcartoon
A bad night for renters. Government has badly let them down.
SF Bill to ban co-living has been defeated by FF/FG/GP.
More gentrified tenement planning applications will follow.
Thanks guys!

Conclusion? Renters can’t trust FF
Richard, glad to see you developing an interest in housing. Pity you didn’t have this interest when in Cabinet.
Your comment below is factually incorrect. How about you & I debate these issues in public with an independent chair. I’m ready when you are.

Only in FFs warped world is gifting public land to private developers to build €400k homes a good idea.
SF Cllrs didn’t vote against housing. They voted against FFs pro developer sweetheart land deals.
We want 100% affordable housing on public land & make no apologies for it!

Most of these are not housing votes. They include controversial rezonings & public land transfers to private interests.
FG & FF created the housing crisis & now their online trolls are trying to blame everyone else!
A non-COVID chart for a change.
Fascinating discovery from
@eoinneylon
here on the voting patterns of Dublin City councillors on housing issues. This is just the 21 votes taken since 2019.
Dublin has an acute housing shortage and the issue will return after the pandemic.
.
@LeoVaradkar
has been in Govt for 11 years.
During that time house prices, rents & homelessness have risen to record highs.
Gaslighting the locked out generation just shows how out of touch he is.
Only a change of Govt & housing plan will end
@FineGael
housing catastrophe.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that he believes that the housing crisis is on the "cusp of changing" with house prices starting to level off or fall |
Why would
@DarraghOBrienTD
launch a Housing “Progress” Report at the same time as Ryan Tubridy is in front of a Dáil Committee? 🤔
Maybe he’s hoping people wont notice the lack of actual progress on social & affordable housing, tenant-in-situ purchases & homelessness. 🙄
On election of
@MichealMartinTD
as Taoiseach:
🚨Pretence that FF & FG are different comes to an end
🚨Dáil finally has clear Left-Right divide
🚨FF, so desparate to get into Govt, let FG set the agenda
🚨Liberal Greens have defeated Left Greens
🚨The status quo remains, for now!
Any politician who claims that rent at €1200pm & house prices at €310k are affordable for singles earning >€50k & couples <€75k is seriously out of touch. For a Minister for Housing to make such a claim is deeply concerning.
This demonstrates beyond any doubt that FG don’t understand affordable housing.
In SF’s policy you do own the home. It is your to alter, extend & pass on to your children.
If & when you sell the home it is to another affordable purchaser at the future affordable housing price.
Two & a half years after the Mullen Park controversy the funds are still at it.
€3000 per month to rent a house that should have been a permanent family home.
The longer FF & FG are in Govt the worse the housing crisis will get.

This is not true. I gave a door step press briefing on Monday & answered questions from two
@Independent_ie
journalists. Quotes from the press event were published in the following days newspaper.
Eoin Ó Broin told the The Week In Politics he has been happy to answer anybody asking questions about the Sinn Fein Abú database.
This is not true.
He has refused to answer any questions from
@Independent_ie
for more than two weeks.
Disappointing article & headline from the
@IrishTimes
today, based solely on a FG ‘report’.
SF did not oppose housing on any of these sites. We opposed land transfers to developers as 50%+ of homes on public land would be unaffordable (1/3).
1st meeting of new
@sinnfeinireland
Dáil team. 37 TDs strong & determined to deliver a Govt for change, to build homes, cut rents, reduce the pension age, stand up to vulture funds & insurance industry & put money back in workers pockets. People want change, it’s time to deliver.
This is truly shocking
That so many EU member states would not support the call for a ceasefire in Gaza is shameful
The EU & it’s member states have lost what ever moral credibility they though they had
History will remember this as a political failure of enormous proportions

affordable housing plan Darragh. I hear you’ve been working on it for the last 4 years so it should be ready by now!!!
@EOBroin
Looks familiar Eoin???? I wonder where you got the idea??? It's said that imitation is the greatest form of flattery, I suppose. Glad to see at last you've come around to the idea of affordable housing, having voted against it in the last Dáil.
2021 was another year of Govt housing policy failure…
🆘 Rising rents
🆘 Rising house prices
🆘 Rising homelessness
🆘 Low social housing delivery
🆘 Almost no affordable housing delivery

Grimmest Dublin property I've seen on Daft for a while.
€1,000 a month for the pleasure of wondering if you can fully open your oven without hitting your bed.
No... we opposed the sale of public land at half its market value to a developer.
The FF/FG sweetheart will see 60% of the homes on this site sold at unaffordable prices of around €400k.
All of the homes on this site should be genuinely affordable for working people.
Sinn Fein in Fingal have just voted against 1,200 new homes for Donabate as part of a plan that’s been ongoing for years. Social, affordable and private; priced at €270k. Real homes for real people.

Clearly we have won the argument. Now we need a Govt to act!
Shameful! The Government has just voted to allow Vulture Funds to continue to snap up homes from under the noses of workers and families.
This practice cannot continue - enough is enough.
It's time for change!
I’m always amazed at how ill informed the height/density debate is. My view is that we need to increase density in our cities with mid-rise mixed-use developments & that those developments must be affordable. It is the only way to solve the housing & climate crises together.
10 years in Govt & FG have not delivered a single affordable home to rent or buy.
Desperate to deflect from his own failure
@LeoVaradkar
resorts to barefaced lies.
It’s time to end the FG sweetheart land deals with big developers & build genuinely affordable homes.
The evidence is really beginning to mount that the Sinn Fein strategy on housing is to make a lot of noise in public, but to frustrate progress on the ground
No surprise that FF & FG opposed our Ban on Rent Increases Bill last. They have never stood up for renters.
The silence of the
@greenparty_ie
during last nights debate however was deafening. A clear sign that they are abandoning their pre election support for renters.
The Taoiseach is lying:
🚨SF don’t have the votes to block developments
🚨SF voted for every social housing planning app in Dublin
🚨SF has called for public hosuing investment for decades
FF/FG starved Councils of funding delaying development for years!
Billy, if you take the time to listen to the interview you will see SF didn’t object to this development.
We proposed a larger development with better use of green space. FF & FG voted it down. Then SF Cllrs voted for the Managers proposal.
Always read beyond the headlines.
Last week
@EOBroin
accused me of lying on
@TodaywithClaire
when I said that he had previously opposed a social & affordable housing development.
He then accused my Party Leader & An Taoiseach of lying in the Dáil.
There’s only one liar in this debate and the proof is ⬇️
More subsidies for developers? Really? Thats the plan?
Here’s an idea. Why not use the €500m to build genuinely affordable homes to rent & buy.
Even better why not build & buy 20,000 public homes a year to meet social & affordable housing need!
I really think that
@MurphyEoghan
has lost it. Young people should be excited about renting crappy bed-sits with strangers for €1300 a month? Has the man any conception of what young people are facing in the rental market in Dublin.
