At the end of the day: Superman is a story about the immigrant experience.
Child of both worlds, but could never fit anywhere.
His strong moral code is BECAUSE of his unique assimilation of both cultures. To forget his alien side and insist he's human is not to understand him.
The main problem with modern takes of Superman is they keep reminding us that he's an alien.
He is a good man with good morals and strong ethics, he'd be that way regardless of his origins.

Growing up is realizing that New 52 Superman is pretty good, actually.
Once you get past the collar that makes him look edgy for no reason, it was a good era that explored younger, rougher Superman and modernized his golden age lore.

It's so funny that Crisis on Infinite Earths ABSOLUTELY FAILED at it was trying to do: making DCU simple to understand.
Instead, it made everything infinitely more complex and set bad precedent of DC to reboot everytime things didn't go their way *even* slightly.
