He was never a nice guy, but he was always a good kid in hard times who was trying his best.
He got mad, he was spiteful, and he definitely wanted validation, but deep down, he was just a lost soul who needed something or someone to give him direction.
Outside of Ditko, Peter is pretty consistently characterised as internally spiteful, but genuinely empathetic even in his teenage years.
