I can’t hold it in anymore, here it is: my full Jon Kent Superman pitch, also known as “Superman: First Son.”
A total reinvention of Jon Kent to save him from fading into mediocrity.
He was never a nice guy, but he was always a good kid in hard times who was trying his best.
He got mad, he was spiteful, and he definitely wanted validation, but deep down, he was just a lost soul who needed something or someone to give him direction.
And now, to round off the Ultimate Trinity, we have Ultimate Batman and Robin!
The main premise here is that this is a Bruce who never had an Alfred or some kind of guiding mentor after his parents' death. He was simply an angry soul in a tortured city.
I think this opinion is really unfounded, not because Miles' time in 616 is objectively better or anything, but because his stories in 1610 weren't particularly impressive for people to clamor for it so strongly.
The last and my personal favorite pitch before we get into teams. It's a top to down reinvention in Ultimate Captain Marvel!
The pitch is succinct: What if the deconstructed super-being was returned back to the children that need that power fantasy?
Fuck it, that Ultimate Wizard Magazine tweet got me inspired.
Here's my pitch for Ultimate Superman. What's the big difference between him and Prime Earth?
Well, he wasn't raised by the Kents. No, no. He was raised by the Els, who found refuge on Earth after Krypton's demise.
@ComicsAsh
For amateur writers out there, let's make this seem less discouraging by putting it in fanfic terms.
This is a Spidey Superfan killing the ship he hates in a fanfic to make way for the ship he likes, he just found a way to make the killing impactful.
"Superman IRL would be Homelander"
Do you know how genuinely hard it is to be that fucked up for a normal person?
Like think about it. Why would you just go around killing people or lording over others with your power?
Most people aren't built like that.
I'm going to ramble about the lovely emotional tightrope that MAWS is playing with Superman's immigrant allegory and how it is striking a cord particularly with me.
This is the biggest swing yet in my Ultimate DCU. From the ashes of The Green Flame of Will rises a young Kashmiri sorceress: Inaya Maqbool, The Ultimate Green Lantern.
The big twist here is mixing the Silver Age Sci Fi of the GLs we know and the Golden Age Magic of GL's debut.
I don't get synergy in comics. If I'm watching X Men 97 and I go to a comic store and see that they have this whole brand new nation with complicated geopolitics
My thought wouldn't be "oh ew too different not interested"
It would be "WOAH WHAT HAPPENED HOW DID WE GET HERE"
@EmeraldBaz
it's funny that he sometimes doesn't actually. like he does have a superman model that looks exactly like the paintings, same with Wonder Woman i think
May he rest in peace.
I know people have checkered opinions on the man, but he got me into comics and I will always owe him for that.
He gave me a huge part of my life, a part that honestly defines me.
Thank you, Benny.
Two days ago, on June 8th, my husband, Ben Potter, passed away in an unfortunate accident.
To many of you, he was Comicstorian, voicing stories from across multiple different mediums. To his loved ones, he was one of the best and most supportive individuals anyone could ask for.
Born to the greatest heroes of the silver age comes the physical marvel who has sworn to devote his existence to all those in need! Faster than fate, as powerful as hope, the ultimate champion of the oppressed for a brand-new age…
JONATHAN KENT, SUPERMAN!
Jon shouldn’t be just a liberal, he should be a REVOLUTIONARY. He has Lois's mouth and beliefs amped up to twelve. The sweet introspective and kind heart of both especially his father, but Jon doesn’t want to peacefully protest…he wants to shake things up
My favorite genre of JL roster pitches is
“Yeah this is just a pretty average JL lineup and you know, MY AMAZING AWESOME GLUP SHITTO WHO WILL PROVE HOW AWESOME HE IS BY STANDING SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH GIANTS!”
i always respect that hustle, i’m part of that hustle…
Ok...
So Gunn's gonna use the JLI to comment on Marvel Studios homogeneity isn't he?
It's less about corporatization and more about the MCU and it's building by the studio style, making a commentary on how the DCU is going to be different.
Mark my words.
This reminded me. Can we admit that the revival of Barry Allen has been a failed experiment?
Besides Flashpoint, what stories did we get out of him that were worth a damn?
@plazynoodles
My dad is brown, while my mom and I are white!
I have friends who can pass for Korean or Japanese, because we also have our own histories with immigration. And did people forget one of the defining cultural features of Arabs is nomadism?
Of course we’re going to be diverse!
im really glad the snyder guys like how I pitch superman. that means, more than anything, we do share some kind of basic understanding of what the character of superman should be.
so the real problems with snyder's portrayal in my mind is more on the stoicism of Kal.
when i heard busiek run "underrated" i thought that was superman fan speak for "good to us, but shit to anyone else"
then i read it and im like
what the fuck this shit is amazing might be the best run on the character i've ever read holy shit
we ask "are we alone in the universe?"
the alien responds "i feel alone."
we comfort each other. in a world of hate and war, in a universe of emptiness and isolation...
it turns out we are not as alone as we think we are.
my favorite interpretation of superman's moral code i think. it's centered around the idea that he has enough power to have the responsibility to always find another way, aka...
he rarely gets into a situation where his actions would be considered self defense.
Moving on from the Trinity, we have The Living Engine, The Sultan of Swift, Wally West: The Ultimate Flash.
In this pitch, he is the first and only Flash (as far as he knows), taking on the mantle when he is only 16.
had a fun idea for a Superman: Life Story thing where Superman does not age, right? So, every issue explores him dealing with new friend groups and new status quos that reflect the era of the decade.
Like it's the same Superman, but he sliding time-scales himself.
the fact there's no superman in amazing is so real because the best superman in every superman fan's tierlist is the one that only exists in their head
Oof yeah idk
Raimi kinda a fraud for this, this suit ugly af!!!
Can't believe this is the Spider-Man we're getting, bring back James Cameron
#RestoreTheCameronVerse
As good of a time as any to drop my Spider-Man pitch I suppose.
My idea for the run is Spider-Man being brought to a new landscape of Psychological Horror mixed with the Body Horror that Spidey is more familiar with through the lens of "depressive surrealism."
How would you fix him
What're the problems with his comics you'd want to address
1 rule- You gotta go further than saying put him back with MJ, why do editors keep breaking them up and what could you change to stop it?
Following up my Ultimate Superman is the pitch that inspired this effort: Ultimate Wonder Woman!
The main difference between this and Prime Earth is that the Amazons do not exist as physical entities (yet).
Rather Wonder Woman is a being born of faith and sisterly love.
reflections of the daily planet cast. not 100% sure
but the usage of Guy and having Steve Lombard gives it away. They're both pretty clear reflections of each other.
Gunn's been consistently describing them as his coworkers in both his lives, so that's probably the logic
Thinking about it again, why on earth are these the characters chosen for this film. Like it feels like they were going for like 3 different teams here but didn't commit to any of them
Idk if this is a hot take, but I don't think Superman should have any American Nationalist undertones at all. He has his own relationship with his country, but acting like he's a symbol of The American Way goes against the ideal structure of his character.
Did a few explorations of the Ultimate Spider-Girl supporting cast.
Some reimagined returns from MC2 and some new kids. I think you can start to guess what vibe this pitch has with this.
So yeah be on the lookout for the full thing, working hard on it.
The King Wonder Woman book is an exercise of such uncreative sexism, it's hilarious.
Why is the feminist icon AND her daughter being framed specifically around how they compare to two male heroes?
If you can't write WW to be interesting on her own merits, don't write her.
I do want to talk about why "Clark is the real guy and Superman is the mask" approach seems to catch on in modern times more than the reverse.
Even though the interpretation is rooted in some heinous interpretations of the relationship immigrants should have with their host...
My pitch for Supergirl is simple. Like I did with Clark a while back, I want to solidify the immigrant allegory as much as possible.
While Clark is very much the second generation immigrant (but a few steps removed in origin), Kara is the first generation immigrant.
Also one more take: action in capeshit comics is so awful. Like no choreography, always filled with narration and dialogue, genuinely atrocious stuff.
Only striking action content I can recall is in Thompson birds of prey, that shit was fire
The way Cavill is directed to portray him, he doesn't emote much and not with a wide variety of emotions. He should not be an emotionally closed off person, he should wear his feelings on his face.
it's not "he should smile more", it's he should frown more, shout more, etc.
i think it would be funny if for the next annual "peter cries over gwen" arc, we have spider-gwen just off to the side the entire time watching the middle-aged manchild version of her dead boyfriend mourning a dead version of herself
When she falls in love with both at different times due to them exhibiting the same good qualities and goes slowly insane wondering how she can go from no man being enough to loving two men at the same time >>>>>>>
i actually don't like this. i don't like basically anything that makes the crime syndicate more pathetic than the justice league, genuinely.
ultraman should be as steadfast in his beliefs as superman is in his.
You don't get it. He should've already BEEN Superman, he doesn't need Zod to threaten humanity to make him come out, because Superman is the ultimate expression of himself.
Unrelated, but every time I see Apocalypse's real name, I can't help but laugh.
Imagine if one of your most threatening villains was called "Good Morning!"
Y’all complaining about En Sabah Nur, but I need y’all to open some books. That man was pale as chalk in his origin story before he became the blue daddy you know and love.
Guys, Taylor isn’t ableist or homophobic or whatever. There is a much simpler answer to all this:
He is a bad writer.
And not like in the “I don’t like him” kinda way, more in the “his stories and scripts fail on a technical level” kinda way
If this is deemed completely untrue we gotta do something to Daz. Like make him become a Batman account or smthn or make him read something really shitty
*my ass being the most proud of my Superman and Wonder Woman pitches*
*the Batman one gets the most attention*
I get why half your comics are Batman comics, DC. I get it
When people tell me slott hate is just bitchy Spidey fans, lemme tell u man
His shit did not end with Spidey. He has this way of writing... It's very gimmicky. Idk how to word it, but characters feel the most like dolls under his pen
like to clarify none of this even matches the pure intrigue of
"Hickman Spider-Man"
like that shit makes you piss your pants screaming
"HUUUUHHH???"
all this is basically ordinary creative teams you'd expect on these characters
According to Bleedingcool, they have heard these names for Absolute Universe.
-Scott Snyder-Absolute Batman
-Jason Aaron-Absolute Superman
-Kelly Thompson-Absolute Wonder Woman
Tim Drake is the boy who wanted to save Batman. Who, when faced with an isolated and angry Batman, wanted to pull his hero out of his own shadow.
But what if he lost faith in him? Not the hero, but the man? The man who keeps pushing his family away?
there's a lot interesting about MJ. i could list them all, or whoever sees this tweet, leave one thing you find interesting about MJ.
I like her working class background, coming from an abusive home, and the class dynamics of her wanting to enter an industry filled with nepotism
