Proposed rail reopening between Manchester & Derby via Buxton & Matlock. Sustainable integrated transport. Connecting local, regional and national communities
#HopeValleyupgrade
To encourage campaigners that railways can still be built and expanded, here is today's first use of the new Platform 1 at Dore and Totley - 05:21 with six coaches of TPE stock, Sheffield to Liverpool - great day for Sheffield-Manchester reliability.
@LouHaigh
@UKLabour
To not commit to
#HS2
phase 2a following the general election would be ludicrous.
Phase 1 has a Benefit-Cost-Ratio of 0.0-1.0
Phase 2 comes in at a whopping 1.6
Numbers don't lie.
👉Design & consultation? Done
👉Parliamentary Bill? Done.
🏗️🚄Build it!
@MEMRAP1
is showing the main stops on the
@PeaksDalesRail
reinstatement. For just 16 miles added to the Network Rail estate, look at that semi-fast route! Fast via Chesterfield and Dore is an option too, freight paths shared, giving @ 75 mins Manchester-Derby
Congratulations to Derby on the award of the GBR HQ. A spotlight now falls on the lack of a direct rail link between Derby and Manchester.
@MEMRAP1
proposes reinstatement of
@PeaksDalesRail
Just 13 miles of new track plus 23 miles of upgrade, to reclaim a mainline railway
The UK needs to get over it’s obsession over it’s capital city and truly devolve
Rail lines need to be upgraded, built and integrated across Wales, North, Midlands and Scotland.
Good to see campaigns like
@MEMRAP1
calling for this sort of thing!
Although the Belper meeting last night was to talk about the challenges facing an underfunded local bus service, the
@MEMRAP1
flyer for
@PeaksDalesRail
was creating much interest amongst local councillors and attendees. Bus is a vital, complementary part of "last mile" proposals
For those with concerns about the impact of a railway, built or altered in and around a National Park,
@networkrail
has put on a pretty good show with the Hope Valley Upgrade. Neat case study for how
@PeaksDalesRail
might look in a few years time
Good progress has been made this month at Dore & Totley as part of the
@networkrail
Hope Valley Upgrade, with the footbridge to the new platform nearly complete. The centre platform, originally closed in 1985 &then demolished, should open on 25 March (served by Manchester trains)
Here is the proof that the UK can still build railways. East-West railway is strategic for economic, social and environmental well being of that region. So is the Peaks and Dales line
For
@MEMRAP1
's newer followers, here is a longer read, the article published in
@Rail_Staff
last month. The aim was to update
@PeaksDalesRail
for the cancellation of HS2, Phase 2. The impact could be significant
@Frankadlingtons
@MEMRAP1
@fjd_gough
Are you talking about reinstating trains across Monsall Viaduct! I've been arguing it for years on Matlock FB pages.. The people of Derbyshire want it to just remain a Dog-Shitting path and want no connection to major cities!
As projections of 25 year growth in rail usage are reported of up to 97%, the need for increased network capacity is clear.
@PeaksDalesRail
is at the heart of England and is key to linking an under-invested East Midlands to Manchester and North West
In context of declining UK GDP/head, here is district level ONS data for remote, rural
@BordersRailway
reinstatement with sustainable growth. Compare with decline in
@HighPeakBC
&
@derbyshiredales
where that opportunity was lost 20 years ago. So, calling for
@PeaksDalesRail
soon!
Seasons greetings to
@MEMRAP1
followers. The campaign ran positive and well attended public information meetings during 2022/23 season in Matlock, Darley Dale, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Bakewell, Great Longstone, Ripley. More planned for 2024 and some other important developments soon.
@CricketAleTrain
@seatsixtyone
Quite! It wasn't even slated for closure by
#DrBeeching
. Barbara Castle deprived us all of this fantastic direct route, which also served the Peak District National Park for c. 17 years until the line was so short-sightedly closed in 1968.
However, there's a campaign!
@MEMRAP1
Reinstate railways - not least those serving our
@uknationalparks
- and they will be used.
#ThoseWithoutMissOut
#Rail
is so much more sustainable than Road - reducing congestion, parking & pollution problems, whilst delivering much-needed socio-economic benefits.
Cc
@MEMRAP1
That is quite something! But would be even better to were ride the actual route, though MCR Central will not see a train again of course! I agree - quite appropriate
@MEMRAP1
@PeaksDalesRail
It really is a splendid way to travel. I also had a chance to travel on the modern recreation of the Midland Pullman last year. This is a lovely touch. Worth zooming in!!
For readers new and old, proposed semi-fast stops of

It is always a challenge to get your message in 140 characters. Grateful to
@Rail_Staff
for the chance to write up the story of
@PeaksDalesRail
reinstatement at slightly greater length. The 2021 version was looking, ahem, a little dated, so here is 2024:
44004 makes a fine sight as it rolls northbound through Chesterfield on a Toton - Tinsley freight, one of the staple workings for the Class 44's in their later years. Its August 28th 1979 and 44004 still has over a year left in BR service. Photograph courtesy J Davenport.
@MEMRAP1
@PeaksDalesRail
I really see this gaining traction now following the unfortunate dropping of HS2’s eastern & western legs.
Mcr desperately needs better connections to the East Midlands. I wonder if this could be a replacement route for the EMR service via Hope Valley?
@memrap1
is delighted to welcome
@BBradley_Mans
,
@ClaireWard4EM
,
@MattRelf
, the three candidates for the new post of East Midlands mayor. They accepted our invitations to attend on 8th February and meet residents of Whaley Bridge, Furness Vale, Chinley, Buxworth. Book your seat!
This was a comment by one of the sub-national transport bodies. My colleagues tell me that its not a fixed amount, depends on specification. However, the issue of containing costs is something that the
@PeaksDalesRail
has as a priority.
@MEMRAP1
@PeaksDalesRail
£15 million for a new station. Why so much? Is there anyway to challenge that or be innovative to reduce the cost. It feels like the cost is made up of multiple organisation taking a cut. It would be good to also see how such costs could be reduced.
The call to revitalise
@peakdistrict
is welcome. Yet its jigsaw pieces of: "the Beatles" and "the NHS", also includes "the Peaks and Dales Line". It ran then and is vital today for greener regeneration, slashed emissions, congestion and low carbon access.
As an unfunded campaign, it may not yet be "oven ready". But 5 years in, with 2 hard hitting Restoring Your Railway bids that rated "socio-economics are strong" from
@transportgovuk
,
@PeaksDalesRail
should now be a leading contender for a public (seed)/private (build) attention
Our railways are in a state of paralysis and in need of urgent change. It is clear rail reform is not a priority for the Tories. It will be a priority for Labour. Read👇🏻
With the second track & platform returned to Dore, plus the work at Bamford and Dore South, the Hope Valley line is ready for smoother and far more "on-time" operation for all. See, you really can enhance rail in a National Park. Roll on
@PeaksDalesRail
Even on a snow night, Whaley Bridge attracted an audience of 50, with many apologies.
@PeaksDalesRail
vision is so appealing to a growing
@MEMRAP1
fan club
@MEMRAP1
Closing the rundown
@GreatCentralRly
mainline to London in 1966 only saved £950k per annum. I can't believe closing Matlock to Great Rocks Junction 14 months later saved even that.
Closed in '68, those speeds are improbable via the curvy alignment of
@PeaksDalesRail
. But 70 mins for Derby-Manchester is acceptable. Derby is similar to Southampton in size and connects to metro Manchester, 25% of London's pop. Midlands and North will benefit.
#levellingup
@HarryBurr_
Fast ????? When Bournemouth electrification opened in ‘66 the Bournemouth fast did it in 70 mins (1h 10m) with a REP & 8 TC to Southampton and 1h 40m to Bournemouth. We have regressed since then.
Heritage to and through
@peakdistrict
is integral to
@PeaksDalesRail
proposals. Come to our public meetings to find out more. Belper (April 8th), then Buxton, then Matlock during 2024. East Midlands and NW England are in dire need of the connectivity.
@MEMRAP1
@LocomotivesUK
@PeaksDalesRail
This would need to include substantial compensation (ideally a new site) for the volunteers who piled 50+ years of their lives into building Peak Rail.
People point out that journey times for
@PeaksDalesRail
can't match West Coast Mainline. True, but look at Chiltern. Peaks&Dales would do for London/Derby/Manchester what Chiltern does so well for London/Birmingham. Far better than today's poor East Midlands times to Manchester.
Being grounded with COVID has its upsides: I bought Adrian Shooter’s book when it was first published in 2022 but have only made the time to read it today. It’s a great read, and shows what can be done on our railway when given appropriate incentives and freedom to operate
Dennis Fancett led a 19 year charge to get the Northumberland Line (Newcastle to Ashington) reopened. The article lists reasons that a reinstatement can envigorate the area it serves. How much more so for
@PeaksDalesRail
, linked to 2 conurbations, not 1.
Its not surprising that more people wish to come to
@PeakDistrictUK
when COVID is restricting holiday air travel. To reduce this type of problem in future years,
#GetPeaksandDalesRailwayDone
@MEMRAP1
I been looking at your map of the line and it just crazy they destroy a line like that but then again they did the same with the Varsity Line which they are rebuilding again but in some places, they built upon the line that makes it more interesting
More evidence for the positive and welcome impact of local/regional rail reinstatement. The 75% in favour of
@ewmlpartnership
from Oxford to Cambridge is similar to our public meeting votes in favour of
@PeaksDalesRail
. Rail reinstatement for our times.
Exciting! Ahead of MEMRAP's Whaley Bridge event on 8th Feb (register via ), the three mayoral candidates debate policy and prospects for the mayor over breakfast. Eager to hear:

@ClaireWard4EM
@MattRelf
To "level up" @ 2 new trains/hour,

and North West sustainably. ** (2 x EMR Aurora units)

How many more times can they promise the North 'transformation' when they have no intention whatsoever to deliver?
Their record speaks for itself:
🚆 record delays and cancellations on the rail network
🚗 🏍 🚲 22 million more potholes
🚌 record-breaking collapse in bus routes
Glad to see that you have been out meeting many of the residents and voters previously engaged by

Lovely to end the work day attending a

public meeting discussing the Peaks and Dales Line proposal.
Also good to formally introduce myself to
@Frankadlingtons
who spoke really well about the Green perspective of this plan.
Hi Richard, thank you for your interest - and welcome to the campaign. You get an automated welcome too as your sub comes through to us - we meet alternate months in Matlock and Buxton, if its convenient to join us
Smaller stations will still be included for
@PeaksDalesRail
assessment work, but with the price tag of a full 2 platform station starting at £15m, its a high bar. But Very Light Rail with its temp 2 car platform starting at £40k is the ultra low cost model (see Buxton VLR)

The black line shows how smart we have been in "sweating the asset" that is our rail network - more than ever in rail history. But its getting crowded - we need more track miles to continue the trend

Sounds like a very interesting talk, but unfortunately too pricey for many to attend.
When and where will your next free public information event in your campaign be please?
MEMRAP has today been invited to bid for a slice of "Beeching reversal" monies by 2 of our supporting MPs, after the whips office released the papers we will need for the application. A milestone day for us - 4 busy weeks ahead.
“We’re beaten. We’re just too busy to be fighting battles like these. Your inconsiderate & selfish actions have just lost a village its service”
Derbyshire bus operator Hulleys of Baslow slams inconsiderate parking and withdraws 173 service to Cressbrook.
This is also how it can be for
@PeaksDalesRail
. As it was for
@BordersRail
. Once the go head is given for reinstating the direct EM link between Leicester-Derby-Manchester, the benefits begin to appear - well ahead of the route opening.
“research found that since the project was greenlighted in 2017 planning applications in a 1.5 mile radius of HS2’s new stations and depot in the West Midlands rose by 66 per cent compared with just 15 per cent in the areas immediately outside.”
Better passenger railway connections between Manchester and the
#EastMidlands
may be one step closer with the trialling of freight movement by train from a Derbyshire quarry to the South East. An interesting article looking at opportunities + challenges -
Peaks and Dales was in that CfBT report, Feb 2019. Network Rail: "In any formal feasibility study it is also recommended that the potential released capacity on the Hope Valley is also considered"

A reopened Camp Hill line in Birmingham would bring 75,000 people within 1km of a new train station.
This line, and the 4 new stations it would provide, was one of 33 priority reopenings in our recent report. Find out what else made the list here:
Thanks Chris, the issues you name will all likely form part of our study and eventual design effort. The promoter's team has expertise to understand / rationalise - as far as practicable - while MEMRAP sticks to the campaign, raising awareness and winning support...
@alanlmsca
@MEMRAP1
@PeaksDalesRail
Costs vary and can be far higher with infrastructure costs. eg. Inverness Airport cost £15m but with infra changes (new loop, level crossing closure etc) cost £42m.
Four platforms for Cambridge South with infra changes will be £183m.
Even single platform Kenilworth was £13m.
"A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transportation" Gustavo Petro, former Mayor of Bogotá (with thanks to Chinley and Buxworth Transport Group)
#GetPeaksAndDalesRailwayDone
We were lucky to inherit the experienced Buxton Town Team's work as a basis. Be assured the specification we set ourselves (ie minimal gradient) is at least equivalent to the existing trail. Regret we cant bring to the public domain ahead of studies, acceptable to
@transportgovuk
@MEMRAP1
@40
Have you got any examples of the kind of thing you mean by reprovisioned route, because a large appeal of the MT is that it is flat, and I can't see how you could avoid Cressbrook Tunnel (for example) without considerable level changes.
A
@PeaksDalesRail
return reduces direct Derby/Manchester journeys from traffic clogged, emissions rich 2+ hours drives to just 75 mins by rail. This aids connectivity, protects "at risk" jobs and fuels joint "levelling up" for both
@MidsConnect
and
@Transport4North
7% of East Midlands' employment is reported to be in ‘at risk’ occupations. Reinstating
@PeaksDalesRail
would reconnect the East Midlands & North West regions directly by rail, catalyse vital economic regeneration & benefit some 9m people.
c.c.
@MEMRAP1
For a mainline reinstatement, such as
@PeaksDalesRail
there are various options for a "minimum viable product" (or pilot) to demonstrate demand. Northwards to Bakewell has also regularly been suggested.
@iansderbyshire
@PeaksDalesRail
@uknationalparks
@MEMRAP1
@peakdistrict
c2.5 miles of single track from a pair of Junctions at Blackwell Mill Curve could bring Millers Dale Station back onto the railway network fairly quickly. Then walkers and cyclists could come by train, using say an hourly Manchester-Chinley-Millers Dale-Buxton-Manchester service.
Once the East Midlands has its new mayor in May,
@PeaksDalesRail
will be a great topic for discussion with
@AndyBurnhamGM
, leading hopefully to a study
@MEMRAP1
@DavidFengTrains
@StPancrasInt
Ooo….now that is a very good point. Something to let the Manchester mayor know about. It would open up the possibility of direct train to St Pancras for the Eurostar service. 😉👍
Late shift .
St Pancras is wedged. Route disruption for LNER and West Midlands.
My next train will be very busy.
ECML trains have longer trains than what we have. So it’s impossible to fit all their passengers into our short trains.
The 1960s technique seemed to be often to chop off whole branches or 10-15 mile sections of line, making it hard to recover them. If closures were ranked by level of opportunity offered today, surely
@PeaksDalesRail
, by reconnecting NW and EM regions, would be close to the top?
@MEMRAP1
The closure case for Guildford-Horsham was extremely weak and for the Guildford-Cranleigh part non-existent. It went ahead because the Southern Region was seen as being a laggard in closing lines compared to some other BR regions.
The proposed Trowell Curve opens up an attractive option for a
@PeaksDalesRail
southern turn at Nottingham via Derby and East Midlands Hub, without reversal, so lets
#GetPeaksandDalesRailwayDone
These will be enabled by the creation of a new Trowell Curve linking the line between the EMH and Clay Cross Jn to the Mansfield Jn to Trowell Jn line that loops round the north of Nottingham.
This intervention is expected to cost around £150m (of the £455m Phase 1 budget).
There hasn't been a direct rail link between Derby and Manchester since 1968, we will change that! 🚂
It's time to link up our region with active travel and decent public transport 🚴🏼♂️
Thank you
@MEMRAP1
for a great event. It was a pleasure to meet you too
