Conservative Party Candidate for Amber Valley | Promoted by Charlotte Cupit on behalf of Nigel Mills, both of Unicorn House, Wellington Street, Ripley, DE5 3EH
I'm delighted to back
@KemiBadenoch
to be our next Prime Minister. She's got the vision, the passion and the grit to get the Government back on track and deliver for the country.
A few weeks ago I changed my mind and didn't back
@RishiSunak
. I'm not making the same mistake again, he is clearly the Prime Minister we need to restore stability and tackle the many serious challenges facing the country.
Yesterday, on behalf of a constituent, I asked the Prime Minister to support an increase in pace of the Vaccine Damage Payment System.
I would like to stress, however, how extremely rare these adverse reactions are.
Last week I raised my concerns about this year’s pensions and benefits increase being based on inflation figures from September.
As inflation is now substantially higher than it was in September, I feel a more appropriate measure would be to use the inflation rate from December.
This is a fair summary of the meeting we had with the EFL earlier. The pressing task is for the administrators to secure the funds to complete the season. We pressed the EFL hard to take a decision on whether the Boro/Wycombe claims were football creditors under EFL rules.
Following today’s meeting with the efl, it’s clear the claims from Middleborough and Wycombe are the major issues. The club has a shortfall of cash to complete the season and that must be met by either a takeover, third party finance or player sales 1/2
Inflation is at the Bank of England’s 2% target for the first time in three years.
The plan is working. Our money is better off under the
@Conservatives
.
I’m backing Derby to become the new HQ of Great British Railways. Derby has a great railway heritage and it’s right at the centre of the UK’s rail network.
This would be fantastic for the whole of the East Midlands.
#DerbyGBR
Very pleased that work has started on Swanwick's
@SleetmoorUtd
's new floodlit, all-weather, artificial grass pitch and toilet block.
The project, which is in partnership with
@Derbyshirecc
is set to offer more sports training for local teams, community groups, and schools.
It is my steadfast belief that the UK and its allies must deliver a massive package of economic sanctions to completely undermine the Russian economy.
We must make clear to Vladimir Putin that the cost of invasion is unjustifiably high.
This afternoon, the House of Commons will pause to reflect and to celebrate the life of a great man.
As we remember Sir David, my thoughts and deepest condolences remain with his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Sir David, you will be greatly missed.
Last week I hosted a Westminster Hall debate to explore ways the Government could increase the take up of pensions guidance and advice.
While pensions advice remains completely free through Pension Wise, the number taking up the offer of advice remains disappointingly low.
It was a pleasure to welcome
@KemiBadenoch
to Amber Valley today for a tour of Denby Pottery Village.
As Kemi said, if re-elected, I will continue to fight for the interests of our constituency, having had the privilege to do so for the past 14 years.
Universal Credit – My view
Last night I spoke with
@maitlis
on
@BBCNewsnight
about why I think the Government’s plan to end the £20 uplift to Universal Credit next month is a mistake.
Pleased to attend the Creating Change for Better reception hosted by
@asda
last week.
The event celebrated 10 years of Community Champions and committed £40m from ASDA to help local communities over the next 5 years.
Great news for Heanor town centre that
@AmberValleyBC
's bid to the Government's High Streets Fund has been approved to proceed to the next stage. This means funding to progress a bid for up to £25 million to transform the town centre.
It's welcome news that the Rwanda policy has been ruled by the High Court to be lawful.
No doubt there will be appeals from a number of campaign groups, and others who believe we should have open borders, however this is undoubtedly a victory.
Yesterday in Heanor -
I was honoured to lay a wreath in Heanor Memorial Park in memory of those who have served our country.
Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Following the election I am no longer the MP for Amber Valley. It's been an honour to represent the area and I'd like to thank everyone who supported me.
I wish my successor all the best.
My office is now closed. We'll be in touch regarding any open casework in the coming days.
I would like to reassure residents that Ripley Hospital is not closing.
Despite rumours that have been circulated by the local Labour party, there are absolutely no plans to close the facility. 1/
On armistice day, we pause to reflect on the heroism, courage, and sacrifice of those who have laid down their lives in the service of our country and our freedoms.
Lest we forget.
It was great to meet with a group of young people from the
@NCSTrust
in Alfreton on Friday.
The group had organised a fundraising event at the Miners Arms to raise money for Ashgate Hospice, which was a brilliant success.
The WASPI scandal has affected many constituents in Amber Valley.
It has now gone on for long enough - I urged
@MelJStride
to pay compensation to those affected.
Honoured to have opened the new
@QEAengineering
academy in Alfreton last week.
It’s a great asset to add to our local community, and exactly the type of employment focused education we all want to see offered locally.
I look forward to seeing it in action.
Well done to
@Derbyshirecc
for moving quickly to cover their
@yourbus
services, especially school buses, for today and Monday. Look forward to the longer term solutions.
A new Warm Welcome Space is opening in Ripley at the Springs of Living Water Christian Centre.
I will be at the opening on Friday 9th December next week, so please come along for a cake, a cup of tea, and a chat – even if you don’t want to talk about politics.
We need your help to make Derby the new HQ of Great British Railways.
From 42 locations, Derby has reached the final 6. Voting is now open to determine the level of support.
Please use the link below and vote for Derby now!
I am pleased to update residents that the Transpeak bus connecting Derby and Buxton, will continue at the same level of service.
I’ve been calling for Government funding to be used by DCC to maintain existing services, so I thoroughly welcome this decision.
Glad to hear that the Government has told rail companies in England not to close ticket offices after listening to feedback from accessibility groups and passenger bodies.
This means that there should be no changes to the ticket office in Alfreton Station.
That's now all of Amber Valley's neighbours to the North and East in Tier 2. Let's all take care and stick to the rules so Amber Valley isn't there next week! I can say from experience this virus is best avoided.
Congratulations to
@RishiSunak
on becoming Leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister.
He was the clear choice to restore stability and he has my full support moving forward.
Last week, I was with the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Diagnostics Hub in Westminster talking to people who have been affected by dementia and clinicians who are involved in diagnosing the disease.
The Department of Health and Social Care has launched a public consultation asking for your views on the process of fluoridation in the treatment of tap water. /1
Very sorry to hear that Jean Gemmell has passed away. She served with distinction as an
@AmberValleyBC
councillor and as Mayor after a career in education. She was also a great enthusiast for musical theatre. Very grateful for the support she provided to me and my family.
Amber Valley has only ever been represented by Conservative or Labour MPs. I am the candidate that’s tough on immigration, cares about the Green Belt, and has brought investment to our health services.
Labour will tax your pensions, your home, and our local businesses.
Despite the storm of the pandemic crashing over the globe these past two years, I’m happy to see the UK enter 2022 with a fast growing economy.
➡️The IMF expect the UK to be the G7's fastest growing economy for a second year.
➡️More people are in work than before the pandemic.
Great to welcome
@RishiSunak
to
@trentbartonland
near Heanor with the East Midlands Mayoral Candidate
@BBradley_Mans
. We spoke to the management team and apprentices - learnt about the business and fantastic Apprenticeship programme.
In
#PMQs
, I asked
@RishiSunak
whether he agrees with me that solar farms should not be built on the green belt where we have farms and instead should be built on sites such as brownfield land.
I know this is an issue for residents in Smalley and Denby - see the PM's response👇
Today, the Government announced plans for tougher penalties for a range of child cruelty offences through ‘Tony’s Law’
This legislation is heavily influenced by the tireless campaigning of Tony Hudgell's adoptive family
I look forward to supporting Tony's Law in the House
I am proud also, that my vocal support for these policies has not gone unnoticed by Putin’s regime. The way I see it, if I’ve been sanctioned by Putin’s Russia, I must be doing something right.
Great news today that
@SomerleaPark
Junior School in Somercotes will be rebuilt as one of the first 50 schools announced in the
@educationgovuk
programme announced today.
We've had an amazing day today at our
#GreatPlasticPickUp
#GPPU
event at Alfreton Park. Thanks to all of the staff that gave up their own time to pick up litter & thanks to Alfreton Park Community Special School, local MP
@nigelmills
&
@AmberValleyBC

Pollution and our waterways -
I welcome the Environment Secretary’s recent announcement of plans to raise the civil penalty for water companies who pollute our environment – a one thousand times increase, from £250,000 to up to £250 million.
Last Thursday I was very humbled to meet the some of the wonderful people administering the vaccine to local residents at Horsley Woodhouse Vaccination Centre.
The country's moving back towards normality because of their efforts. I know the people of Amber Valley are very proud
Numerous independent studies and government reports have shown that water fluoridation can significantly reduce tooth decay. However, this public consultation will be an important part of any future government decisions on this matter. So please get involved! /2
Thanks to local MP
@nigelmills
for visiting us to not only open our brand spanking new state of the art showroom but also to listen about our ambitious growth plans and potential local employment opportunities. More here -
Very sorry to hear of the passing of Kath Brown. She was an Ironville stalwart who served 2 terms on
@AmberValleyBC
. She will be greatly missed. My condolences to Jack and the family.
Derby County Football Club –
With DCFC set to finally exit administration soon, last week I spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on the bid to take over Derby County, and the need for further regulation in football.
Exciting day at the opening of
#WingfieldStation
. I remember this being an ongoing discussion when I was a Councillor, great to see it complete now. A massive well done to all who were involved, especially
@dhbtrust
.
Many constituents have contacted me regarding last week’s vote in relation to free school meals, so I wanted to set out my views on this issue and what happened last week. You can find my full blog post on this issue here:
Good to see
@Derbyshirecc
Highways Capital Programme includes traffic lights at the Steam Mill Lane junction, and improvements to ease congestion at the Hurt Arms junction.
Many constituents have contacted me about how difficult these junctions are at busy times of day.
Good Luck Dave Ellis!
Amber Valley’s very own Paralympian, Dave Ellis, is competing in the men’s paratriathlon (class: PTVI) tonight at 00:30 BST. I’m sure everyone in Amber Valley is really proud of him. Good luck Dave, we’re behind you all the way!

£15M has been allocated to Derbyshire to deliver more special needs places - this will help improve the accessibility of buildings and provide more specialist support for children with additional needs.
I've seen in my own family how parents of children with special educational needs sometimes feel like they have to fight the system.
I'm determined to put an end to this.
I'm pleased to deliver this investment which I know will have an enormous impact👇
I welcome the announcement today that the cost of NHS prescriptions will be frozen
In addition, the NHS low income scheme can provide help including free prescriptions for eligible students, pensioners, and those who receive benefits or are in care homes.
Great news that the Planning Inspector has rejected the appeal against the refusal of the Alfreton-Oakerthorpe solar farm. The right decision has been reached, congratulations to the residents group!
Today we brought together local authority leaders, MPs and businesses to discuss benefits & opportunities of investment in the East Midlands.
I called for ministerial support on 2 key schemes: the Midland Main Line Electrification and A46 Newark Bypass.
I've created a short poll for Amber Valley residents to express which of the remaining candidates you would choose to be our next PM.
The poll takes around 3 mins to complete, and I’d be interested to hear your views as the contest progresses.
My August newsletter is now live, you can read it here:
Also, with the leadership contest entering its final stage, I am interested to hear your views. So, please do spare a few minutes to take part in my final leadership poll:
Nearly £3 million for community projects in Amber Valley:
I’m pleased to update residents on AVBC’s allocation of £2,978,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). The money will be spent on projects to benefit local communities and businesses over the next 3 years.
Congratulations to Liam Whitby of Langley Mill who's been selected to represent Team UK at the WorldSkills Competition 2022.
Liam demonstrated world-class excellence and has dedicated himself to an intensive training programme for the past three years to compete
Good Luck Liam!
On
#RemembranceDay
, I wish to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Let’s remember and honour their courage, resilience, and the freedom they’ve secured for us.

Beavers in England – Good News!
The consultation on brining beavers back to England launched today.
Beavers were once native to Britain but were hunted to extinction here around 400 years ago.
Find out more here:
I agree with the Government that some more measures are needed to slow down the spread of Omicron until more people can be boosted and until we can learn more about this new variant.
Tonight, the Planning Board will vote on whether the proposed solar farm around Alfreton gets planning permission. The planning officers have recommended the application be refused
I welcome this, the application is clearly not consistent with planning law and should be rejected
Thank you to many of AV’s schools and businesses who are working to supply frontline PPE.
@johnflamsteed
D&T department have already made and supplied 2500 visors

I nor any other MP believes that animals do not have feelings. There is no argument about the principle and I did not vote that animals cannot feel pain. For full details and clarification please see my blog post here:
Great to hear how Holbrook School for Autism, The Riddings Infants and Turves Green Boys School achieved their STARS School of the Region Awards
#STARSAwards
It was great to be on
@bbcemt
last Friday. I said that benefits need to be uprated in line with inflation so people can afford the essentials and have a decent standard of living.
I also spoke about East Midlands' transport links and the importance of Black History Month.
I was proud to stand on a manifesto that identified finding a cure for dementia as one of the Government's biggest priorities, and I hope that progress can be made as part of the new 10-Year Plan for Dementia:
