This is not long-term transport planning; it's short-term expediency. Ripping up 25 yrs of transport policies - many enacted under previous Conservative Governments - in a desperate attempt to win votes is deeply retrograde and will damage communities, the country and the planet.

In 1963, the Beeching Report led to the closure of almost 2,500 stations and a third of Britain's railway lines. In 2023, road traffic is blighting communities and transport emits more greenhouse gases than any other sector. It's time to #ReverseBeeching .

Let’s dissect this… £1bn bus investment as part of Network North only equates to what was already promised as part of the National Bus Strategy when HS2 was STILL going to Manchester. Bus funding shouldn’t come from lost rail investment; it should come from the roads budget.

Today’s annual bus stats show a 19% increase in passenger journeys outside London. This is good news! Post-pandemic, people are getting back on buses with the help of the £2 fare cap. But there’s still a way to go. Total bus provision fell 5% & the cycle of bus cuts continues.

In case you missed it: this week the Welsh government scrapped road building plans across the precious Gwent Levels, thanks to the hard work of the local community. Our @darrenshirley is quoted in this Guardian article. @CalmCampaign #nonewm4

Three months isn't long enough - the £2 bus fare cap should be extended. The cost-of-living crisis won't end in March, and neither will the need to cut car traffic. Agree? Email your MP here:

We’re in today’s ⁦ @ObserverUK ⁩ asking the question, why are rail fares going up faster than the cost of driving when we’re in the midst of a #climatecrisis ?

Our report for @appgleftbehind & @LocalTrust found that 50% of all stations in 'left behind' neighbourhoods were closed following the Beeching Report in the 1960s. Communities can't thrive without decent transport. #ConnectingCommunities

Bus fares have risen 60% in 10 yrs, and that's a real problem - affordable public transport is vital to social justice. So it's great that lower bus fares are being trialled in Cornwall with the aim of increasing passenger numbers - as we have called for.

Bus lanes are popular! 7 out of 10 people think buses should have priority over cars on busy roads. But as part of its 'plan for drivers', the govt proposes weakening bus lane provision. Take action - email your MP in support of bus lanes here:

The £2 bus fare cap announced today will help struggling households, cut traffic congestion and carbon emissions, and inject new life into dwindling bus services. It’s such a win-win that we think it shouldn’t be restricted to 3 months, but should be extended indefinitely.

The cheapest flight from Bristol to Edinburgh or Glasgow starts at £23 with EasyJet, while a CrossCountry train starts at £108.50. We NEED better price parity between taking the train and flying or driving. #FareFuture Read our report 👇

New figures show transport is still responsible for more CO2 emissions than any other sector. With public transport producing a fraction of the emissions of cars & lorries, we need policies that bring good, affordable public transport to all communities.

Rail is already one of the most sustainable ways to travel but it's even getting greener! A rise in passenger kms last year has meant train emissions per passenger km have dropped by 31%, proving that the more people who use the train, the more emissions we can save.

Passengers face an eye watering 7.8% fare rise next year, thanks to the highest annual growth rate since 2001. Rather than hammer rail passengers yet again, the Gov should freeze rail fares – as they have done with fuel duty – until the long-promised ticketing reform takes place.

📰Quoted @DailyMirror . "Bus cuts have a devastating impact. A lady in her 80s recently told us she has no choice but to move house because she can no longer get to the GP or hospital. Every neighbourhood should have at least a minimum level of service."

This morning we learnt that regulated rail fares are set to rise by 3.2% in January. We say this is unfair and we are calling for a fares freeze. Read our blog to find out why:

We’re campaigning to change this. Of the local authorities that applied for funding from the national bus strategy, 31 received less than they’d applied for while almost two thirds received nothing at all. The way buses are funded needs to change.
