Thorough as always. The candidate summaries are admirably succinct, such as this one on Grant Shapps - ‘Known as a tech whizz in the Tory party because he can use excel to make lists and has a folding phone.’
New election briefing just out:
A big round of seat previews today. Finishing off the capital by looking at the central London boroughs.
And starting on the east of England with two commuter counties - Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

I love it when DAG does a long post. And this is well worth reading. Coruscating on the police closing ranks and thereby losing the trust of those that- til now- had no reason to doubt them.
@BenRamanauskas
He wasn’t hated, he got mocked for traipsing around trying to find a safe seat, the party wouldn’t parachute him into one, so he spent his time being turned down by the associations. If we had PR then the we’d be more able to select based on talent rather than just being local.
We spotted these signs while out on our daily walk today at the Racecourse and thought they were fab! 🌈
Have you spotted these or any other signs around Northamptonshire?
@DamCou
They've also switched Mauritania and Western Sahara, and given British Somaliland to Italy. They’ve also left out Sao Tome & Principe. Which is why that map wasn’t used when I did A level geography.
If you’re interested in government Sam’s substack is a bargain. People like him should be paid advisors. And I’m pleased he’s picked out the importance of local authorities, less centralisation would cheer me up.

A few thousand spectators
@NorthantsCCC
today to watch the most thrilling game I’ve seen in a while. As
@selvecricket
puts it, the List A format allows for a narrative, and today the narrative was gripping, and most of the crowd stayed to the last gasp at around 6.40pm.
@lordbonkers
Neither of Northampton’s Tory MPs have tweeted. Although having checked, I see Andrew Lewer is banging on about defeating communist dictatorships. No comment about all the non Communist dictatorships treating their populations abominably.
"Those besuited traitors should be donating to Ukrainian humanitarian and military fundraisers every penny made from serving the Russian elite’s 30-year looting spree."

My understanding is to try and protect the value of the pound, so we don’t get a currency crisis along with everything else.

It’s the power thing again, isn’t it? If some seedy old devil hasn’t got the clout he wouldn’t dare to, if it’s someone roughly on your level it’s not so much of an issue. It still sticks with you, mind, but it’s the power dynamics that make it so painful for the victims.
Interesting as ever. The point that struck me is that those who have built up a following elsewhere via Twitter, and aren’t therefore bothered by its probable decline under Musk, are pulling up the drawbridge on equally talented folk who aren’t so far down that route.
Twitter is a dystopian hellscape. There's a nonzero chance Elon can improve it. And if he ends up destroying it, then we'll migrate to other, less toxic platforms.

Treat day in Northampton. Calories galore. No hoisin crispy owl available today, however.
On the bright side, no ‘protestors’. This is actually a nice town to live in, so glad I chose here.
Went to my first
@NorthantsCCC
supporters club lunch today. It was packed, over 119 people I think. Shows the relationship between the club and the season ticket holders. Good also to hear
@ggwarren_
speak candidly about the future of the game, and to meet
@finbarr57
properly.

FDR- ‘So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself’. DJCP- ‘that’s ridiculous, you should get antidepressants immediately.’
African Caribbean cricket day at Wantage Rd, hope

do this next year too. Only mistake I made was not photographing the food for

. I was too busy eating it.
It contains the usual pithy summaries of the candidates, plus this:
‘As you can see Merseyside is another hotbed of factional wars, as with many parts of inner London, the total dominance of the party creates the conditions for it’.
Which is a fear for the future government.
New election briefing just out:

Disappointed that the Derren Brown thing tonight didn’t conclude by waking me up from the hypnotic sleep induced in 2016, to tell me the last four years have been a feverish trance.

Ooh, contentious. I voted ‘never’, but on the remarkable off chance he gives a grovelling, sincere apology and works for charities that help abused victims, I’d change that to a ‘maybe’.
A good win for
@NorthantsCCC
tonight. 1st quarter final for 4 years, & a first win against the Bears after 7 previous defeats. And
@SaintsRugby
paraded their trophy at half time, to the warm applause of the crowd. A good turnout, for a Thursday evening, took ages to get a pint.
@Samfr
Can’t believe it’s been two years since you woke up and asked twitter to entertain you. Hope you have many, many more years entertaining and informing us.
Very enjoyable first day of the season at Wantage Road. Emilio’s highest 1st class score, decent lunch, and got the first batting point just as Wendell came in for a natter.
Not impressed to see West Northamptonshire Council in Private Eye again. I thought the point of getting rid of the old councils following bankruptcy was to start afresh and better. Same old waste of taxpayers money it seems.
Currently reading the Northamptonshire CCC pre AGM report. It has
@oldmanradd
down as the ‘Activist’. A typo or recognition for world-class chuntering?
When Johnson’s ministers had quit because he ignored complaints about sex pest Chris Pincher, he appointed Peter Bone as a minister, totally ignoring the long-standing complaints about him. Dysfunctional government.
NEW: Tory MP Peter Bone faces 6-week suspension from the House of Commons after ruling by Independent Expert Panel.
Panel found he has "committed many varied acts of bullying and one act of sexual misconduct.”
He was such a good man, good to chat with on here about poetry (big Larkin appreciator) and it’s deeply sad he was essentially snuffed out by trolls and a hopeless employer.
Nice to see the Hall of Fame extended onto another wall, with Jumble and the greatest captain of my lifetime, Geoff Cook. Also on the Durham Hall of Fame, I think.
@oldmanradd
will say if I’m misguided here.
Superb. An old mate of mine used to grade hangovers- eg the ‘angry cat trying to get out through your eyeballs hangover,’ the ‘vague, zen-like hangover’ and worst of all, the ‘dinner with Anthony Burgess hangover’. I guess this is where he got it from.
Did Gloucestershire bat on too long? Whatever the case, it was a nice day to be watching county cricket, and tomorrow should be a good day too. I just hope that soon we get a coach as good as Mark Alleyne, you can see the change in their attitudes already.
“Middlesex's bid to become the most dysfunctional club in county cricket - a highly competitive field - has taken a leap forward with the appointment of the man charged with finding a new chair of the club as the new chair of the club.”

Thriller. First defeat at home for Lancs for 26 matches, first time we’ve beaten them since Noah was a lad, or something. Gutsy performance by the Steelbacks.
Tyler Kay, 26, Northampton. Today facing up to 7 years in prison for inciting racism and hatred online as per Section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986. Prior to this he ran a scam company "Infinite Computing" that took several £100,000 in preorders for computer parts.

who stocked me up well the other week. Well worth a visit.
Brilliant performance, and thank you to

for the commentary, which was such good company this afternoon. Fingers crossed for seeing this IRL ere long.
In June 2016, no one knew about No Deal AKA the WTO Option. Almost no one was calling for it. I had published something in 2015 about what would happen in a No Deal situation. It was not until June 2016 that people picked up on it and the FT phoned me. No one understood. THREAD
A lot of hard yakka for the Northamptonshire bowlers today. Interesting take on the Kookaburra ball by IDK Salisbury on commentary, but it was dry old stuff for the spectator.
A bunch of goons and online hatemongers haven’t only caused worry and fear to business owners, it’s cost them money and the state a fortune. Certain people should be held financially liable.

Now we don’t need a reason to enjoy a sweet treat but as Sunday is International Chocolate Day, it would be rude not to indulge. Where do you get your local chocolate treats from?
Lovely chat from
@oldmanradd
& the twitterless Phil Rowe on BBC cricket about Allan Donald playing league cricket in Northampton and tearing the place up, wounding batsmen and all that caper.
Listening, as ever, to Andrew Radd on commentary. Phil Rowe as summariser. I’m wondering if the loss of Phil’s avuncular presence plus David Ripley’s guiding skills leaves a gap in the emotional intelligence as well as the cricket intelligence.

This song also has the lyrics...
"Go on now, go,
Walk out the door.
Just turn around now,
'Cause you're not welcome anymore."
So true. It’s the ‘two blokes who are mates and *banter* with each other’ format that’s really tiresome. Which is why, despite having subscribed to loads, I still end up listening to BBC radio.
Annie Lennox trending. Wondered why. It’s because she wore a face mask and every wingnut on twitter is getting bent out of shape. Anyone got a blue sky code?
