This has been a challenging painting but I’m pleased to finish it today, when @ashwinravi99 has already taken two superb wickets. I don’t suppose it’s realistic to expect him to see it, but it would be lovely if he does at some stage, so any retweets very gratefully received.

The thing about Test cricket is, there are over 100 years of records that can be broken on any given day. Over 5 days, it’s able to bamboozle us, defy our expectations, deliver impossible results and make our best predictions look ridiculous. Why wouldn’t anyone adore it?

Every time I’m reminded that Warne only has 4 more wickets than Anderson, the more frustrated I get that Jimmy wasn’t given the whole summer. If he had, he definitely would’ve got those 5 extra wickets. Is he still a better bowler than either Wood or Woakes? I honestly think so.

Just rewatching the 2019 WC documentary on SKY. It should never be forgotten that Liam Plunkett such a massive part of England’s attack. The fact that he was discarded so quickly and so unceremoniously after making such an important contribution still makes me angry.

Test cricket really is the most beguiling thing. In any given Test you can see the frenetic energy of a T20 alternating with periods of consolidation whilst pressure builds. It encapsulates all other forms of the game whilst being greater and truer than any of them.

I used to do loads of this sort of quick sketch. They’re obviously far less detailed, less realistic and less artistically pleasing than the full portraits I’ve done in the past, but they’re quite fun to do. It’s nice to do this one and disengage the brain for a bit.

I wish Graeme Swann’s shock retirement mid way through the 2013/14 Ashes series had been treated with the same understanding now given to Ravi Ashwin. I always felt he was unfairly vilified for admitting that he couldn’t do it anymore having realised it was time to go.

Even though I’m only watching on a screen, seeing Test Cricket being played at a beautiful ground on a gorgeous summer’s day really makes me happy. It’s what summer is. At the risk of sounding old fashioned, it’s what cricket is to me. It’s relaxing yet wonderfully captivating.
