200 miles on Italian train- bought ticket last night for €35. No silly barriers at station, just check platform number on the board and go to platform. Train on time, clean, nobody in your reserved seat, cheap coffee and pastries- blissfully easy and pleasant. The UK can't
It's really tough being an independent business in the UK. We watch huge corporations with massive marketing budgets gobble up customers and then paying almost zero tax.
This morning for example, we went into a beautiful coffee shop and had amazing coffee and food, but the

Railways run for profit rather than a public service. They lied to us by claiming this would make it better. Its a disaster for the environment and for society.
Came up behind a cyclist last night whilst driving. He was in black and his back light had either fell off or died. You know what? I saw him, I over took him safely and nobody was hurt. How? Because I look where the hell I'm going!!! It's not hard!
@JohnnyMercerUK
Veterans still sleep rough up and down the country. That's on your govt. The ideology your party is built upon has no place to support those in need. In fact, quite the opposite.
@JeremyVineOn5
What an utterly ridiculous notion. Let's hope we never end up so callously cruel that this becomes anything but an outrageous far right idea.
The lockdown
Nice people: let's not return to normal, more bike lanes, fewer cars. Enjoy the clean air. Look how clean things are.
Horrible people: let's queue for KFC in running cars and leave our filthy litter all over the place.
Exactly one year ago today I had my first round of Chemo for esophageal cancer. Started the day having a hickman line fitted, then 2 hours of chemo infusions, followed by a 24hr infusion I took home with me. What a mad year its been since then.
@ThanksCancer
what a wild ride.
Based on my use of shared bike and walk routes, I've come to the conclusion that the vast majority of pedestrians can't walk in straight line. Instead, they meander in a wavy line formation, lurching from one side of the pathway to the other. No amount of bell ringing can counter
On the left is me one year ago, a few weeks out of surgery about to start chemo and still on a feeding tube. On the right is me today. What a difference a year makes. I've had a few false starts on my return to fitness but I think I'm finally back on it.

More children with supportive parents in the state sector is brilliant. More kids means more money will have to be created and spent into education, this is also good. There's no downside to this. Smart, hard working kids will do well in any school.
Every night around South Manchester 100s or more have takeaways delivered. A modern phenomenon. But you don't see these done on bikes, they're all done in cars. Cars driven short distances and then left idling as delivery folk goto front doors. We won't use these services until
Cannot tell you how happy this makes a triathlete/owner of a bike business. I got to build a bike for the one and only

has just collected his NorthRoad Explorer. Set up for constituency work with a removable pannier and thule rack. Mike is super hard working so we just hope he gets a chance to take the luggage off and have a play.

I started 2023 2 months post surgery and 1 month post chemo. Weak, tired and with a feeding tube straight into my jejunum. I started 2024 with a 5k run, a bacon butty and feeling at about 80%. Let's see how we can perform this year.
Home from my appointment with the oncologist and relieved to know I'm done with chemo!!!! I've had enough to be effective in clean up and to have more would be detrimental to my general health. So now I can start to get better. I'm over the moon.
I don't understand the mentality of someone who looks at this and instantly thinks- aargh, danger, unsafe.
I look and think- cool, want to give that a go.
Getting ready for my first bike ride since surgery. The gravel is calling. Only a little tester today to see how it all feels and to soak in some tree therapy.
I wasn't going to share this because I thought it would be manageable, however, it's become increasingly apparent that I'm going to lose time from days and need time off so I'm letting you know what's going on.
I was diagnosed with some cancer on the gullet (don't panic...
Walking the dog this morning and we saw a van driver, drive his van onto the pavement, to avoid double yellows, so he could get a bacon butty, right in front of 6 cops in 3 cop cars. This is how seriously pavement parking is taken in South Manchester
@gmptraffic
. Same van
Anyone else old enough to remember doing this as a kid? No helmet, no helicopter parents, no lightweight bike and sometimes with your mates under the ramp! My record- 11 kids.
Recovering from cancer treatment and surgery isn't linear. After a few really amazing weeks you then get reminded how bad it can be for a few days, currently having some of those days
@ThanksCancer
. It's OK I didn't want to eat anyway, so ner.
Second lot of chemotherapy starts today. This is the post surgery clean up to make sure no nasties are left in my body. No idea how I'll react, could be worse than last time apparently 😕. Hickman line went in this morning so that's nice and painful too.
My 99th

in the sunshine was probably my toughest and slowest but really pleased with myself to have done it.

It's worse than that. We are a currency issuing nation so taxes don't pay for anything (they have an important role but it isn't that). Instead we are seeing a deliberate choice to starve public services because of political ideology. There is money to provide amazing services
6 months since life changing surgery to remove part of my oesophagus and stomach, and today I managed a small breakfast at the local cafe. Still have days when I can't eat a lot but this was great.
How embarrassing to be unable to make high speed rail in the country that essentially invented the railway. 10x the cost of every other nation, per mile and no one seemingly capable of managing it. Are we really so bad or is it corruption?
Golden iO anyone? Featuring

Last year amazon made 12.3Billion! on black Friday. Bezos doesn't need your money. Small independent businesses like us and so many more benefit so much more from your support, as do our staff and local communities.
For the first September in 15 years I'm not getting ready to teach. The move to running NorthRoad Cycles full time is upon us. Scary and exciting at the same time.
10 days from major surgery and back out with my beloved

and my best furry mate, Bertie. Moving is the only way to speed to recovery, no point sitting feeling sorry for yourself.

Started this week having chemo but went to the bikery in the afternoon and have been in every day this week. What a difference having better anti-sickness and a slight reduction in the chemo has made. Yeah I'm tired, yeah I'm grumpy but I'm in building bikes and cracking on.
Meet Hailey, our new mechanic. A fully Cytech qualified bike tech with an eye for detail. She's been an absolute star whilst I've been having surgery and she feels like she's been part of the team for ages. Just need to get her upskilled on the coffee machine.
It's 10 days since my last chemo and right on cue my taste buds have returned! I can't tell you how happy this makes me. Might celebrate with breakfast salad and cake.
Wouldn't it be great if a UK Bicycle Manufacturer made a capable and fun Gravel bike out of recycled aluminium. Wouldn't it be great if they actually manufactured it on shore despite the geo-political difficulties? Imagine the reduction in carbon footprint.
Oh wait. Coming Soon
Been quiet on the NorthRoad socials and in the Bikery this week. I’ve been in hospital this week following an emergency bowel stent fitment. It seems my old friend might be back in a new area but I’m ok and ready to take on anything. If you’ve been trying to get in touch I’m very
2022- diagnosed with cancer in March, chemo may, June, July, major surgery Aug, chemo again. In amongst this 4x endoscopy 1x minor surgery. I'm exhausted and learning how to live with about half to 2/3 stomach. I also can't swallow lots of fun foods. In many ways an awful year...
This is Debbie. Debbie is representing GB at the world triathlon championships and will be using her NorthRoad iO for the bike leg.
We have nothing but respect and send lots of positive vibes and good luck her way!!
We really want to offer a more entry level priced gravel bike and after a failed attempt with an ally frame we have found a cromolly frame. 4130 cromolly, 12mm thru axles and with a sub £1k price point.
This would be an off the shelf bike with no paint options. Thoughts?
Delamere duathlon done!! First race since before chemo-surgery-chemo. After a few false starts trying to build fitness it felt good to get this done. The rain stayed off and I had my favourite supporters with me (photos in next post)
I’ve made a mistake, I changed from android samsung to iPhone. What a terrible clunky user interface it is! Going to call ee and see if I can return it and swap for a s24.
After a much better experience with chemo this time I've been able to run, ride bikes and do long dog walks. As such, I think it's time I did my 100th

this Saturday. It won't be quick but it will be done. I'm sure

will approve
Is it any wonder nobody uses the trains and there's so many cars on the road when it costs 300 quid to get from Manchester to Aberdeen (each) and you can drive us there and back for about 80 quid in fuel.
Absolutely stunning NorthRoad iO. Ultra reliable Shimano Ultegra 2 x 11 groupset, NR50 wheels and super cool copper paint.
How do you want yours?
