2) USSR started the war as Hitler’s ally.
3) USSR was on the edge of collapse and starvation; it was saved by Western aid, both military and food.
4) USSR did not fight Italy or Japan (before nukes); US and UK fought all three.

The reason is that their fabled military is a sham. They’ve exhausted their resources and have to pretend they’re being soft. In reality, they’re a broken power, able to defend prepared positions (and still taking losses) but they’ll never launch a proactive mass manoeuvre again.

Russia is a literal colonial empire (Russian here). NATO is a voluntary organisation that takes a lot of effort to get into. If it was about NATO, why isn’t Russia attacking Sweden and Finland? They’re a lot closer than Ukraine is even now, never mind in 2014.
