In other news, my daughter and her coworker (teens/restaurant) were accosted by a 40-something patron yesterday.
Him: “Why are you wearing f-ing masks?!”
Kid: “It’s where we hide Hilary’s emails and the stolen ballots.”
And this is why we need polar ice: it reflects solar energy = high albedo = keeps our planet 😎.
Darker ice-free water absorbs solar energy = low albedo = 🥵

As someone who comments on manuscripts for a living, I’d suggest that this is not the way to deliver feedback and help a student or writer grow. Quite awful. Abusive, really.
Friends, it's bizarre that in nearly 21 years of living in New England, I've never seen an eastern bluebird – until now. I look up from my work and...
...not one, not two, but seven? Eight? Right outside my office window!
Good morning! I almost missed this one. Peeked under the bedroom blind, saw red, raced down here in my pjs. 😂
And if you’re wondering: no saturation, no enhancement, just what the phone camera captured.

Good morning! You’ve never seen anyone get from bed to the beach as fast as I just did.
It faded within 5 min of me arriving. (Pics in next tweet.)

1/ Friends, I'm SO excited to share something I've been sitting on for a while:
I'll be the US Education & Outreach Coordinator for SWAIS 2C (Sensitivity of the Antarctic Ice Sheet to 2°C of Warming).
I'm so happy to be part of this vital work.

1/ Saw a piece of wood almost buried in the sand. But something made me stop to check it out.
I’m glad I did because it wasn’t a piece of wood. This limulus (horseshoe crab) was in dire straits.
Ok

#geology
twitter, here’s a fun challenge for you. Explain this thing I found high up on this hiking trail, around Ob Hill, McMurdo Station.

Wow, the stairs at Marconi are gone. I’m out here with Parks Service folks, and we don’t think the bit we’re standing on will be safe much longer.
So they’re shutting it off.

So… some personal news. This thing is coming to live in my house today.
I don’t know cats. Not a cat person. Also allergic to cats. Any bets on how long before I fall in love with it anyway?
2/ Is she still alive? Yes!
And she’s not so little. She’s the size of a very large dinner plate across, and I’ll wager she weighs 8- 9 pounds, which I carried for 3/4 of a km up to the tidal river...
Good morning! After 3 days, the

is finally pushing out, but the waves are still pretty huge.
They’ve ripped out what I assume is a wave height buoy.

Hard to believe I get paid to paint birds sometimes. A page I did today for a children's book I'm illustrating for a private client. (Will need a click.)

My pollinator garden changes weekly, and it’s so pretty right now and chockfull of bees, butterflies, bugs, and birds during the day.
Pulling out the lawn for this? Zero regrets!

People say scientists are serious but marine biologists will spend hours quietly sitting around tables drawing on styrofoam cups and then tying said cups to deep sea submarines
Because ocean pressure will squeeze the air from the cups
And we are but human & we want tiny cups

Question for a book I'm editing. US folks, what do you call these? And what part of the US are you from?
(If you're not from the US, I'm also interested to hear what they're called where you live.)
If I had 5000 followers, I’d have a better chance of getting this life-changing job I really want doing something good for climate science and by extension the world. 🙏
Here are some diatoms I painted. (A vague allusion to my dream job!)

So, some personal news…
After 20 years, we are sadly leaving Rhode Island. I’m really going to miss our great little town & my garden & studio.
But… we will be living IN a National Park—Cape Cod National Seashore—& even closer to the ocean!
#OceanDevotion
📷
@NASAEarth
SO envious of my husband, who has just driven along the beach for the entire length of Cape Cod National Seashore on an ATV for the sake of science, which apparently is every bit as fun as it sounds.
Ok… I’m reconsidering. Only light can stamp out darkness and hate, and god knows this site needs more light and beauty.
And today’s sunrise was very beautiful.

1/ URGENT: The legendary
@theJR
is a scientific ocean drilling ship that drills deep into the seafloor to teach us about Earth's past & inform the future.
But she's getting old. Science needs a new drillship, & we need your signature!
#ScienceTwitter
She’s been my friend and my cuddles and the best listener during this very challenging visit home.
She was a very good girl, and I loved her. Rest well, sweet Dahlia.
Treasure! Got to my desk to find a gift from the Toolpusher. This drill cone (now buffed and laquered) has been deep into the seafloor on

. I will hold it precious forever—it and the guenuine kindness of a few people on this ship.
Good morning! About 30 minutes ago, I completed another trip around the sun, and I’m taking the day off. So, I am standing here waiting for my coffee to brew and a glorious sunrise to fire up. What could be better?
#OceanDevotion
Good morning! This is 25 minutes before sunrise.
Waiting to see if it fires up a bit, so this may be 1 of2, but I love the drama of the sky in this moment!
#OceanDevotion
Good morning! One of those days where I wake at 4:30, check the cloud cover on my weather app, peek through my bedroom window, leap out of bed, and race down for a magnificent treat.
The showers out at sea are the frosting on the cake. Enjoy!
