Today is the funeral of Mrs Efstratia Mavrapidou in Skala Sykamnias, Lesbos. Mrs Mavrapidou was one of the Greek grannies photographed by Lefteris Partsalis holding and feeding a Syrian woman’s baby in October 2015. She was 96 years old.
Hundreds of residents including Greek holiday makers are now leaving the island of Evia on this ferry as fires continue to rage on Sunday.

Difficult night on the island of

for thousands of residents, holiday makers and seasonal staff ordered to evacuate as fire keeps raging. People will spend the night at indoor stadiums, chartered ferries, hotels (not affected by the fires), schools and outdoors on beaches.
An elderly man is carried to this ferry that is waiting to evacuate any remaining residents from this side of Evia island. A raging fire has currently cut off all road exits. This beachfront is the safest place to be now, we are told by the coastguard.
