Umping 10U little league game and a team lays down a safety squeeze bunt. Opposing coach comes flying out of the dugout “YOU CANT BUNT IN THIS LEAGUE!” I say okay, bring the kid back to the plate and he proceeds to slap one over everyone’s head for a 2-run Homer. #tearsofjoy

You want a cue to use when throwing a curveball behind in the count? "Try to give up a home run." Behind Count (1-0,2-0,2-1,3-1) CB's that have landed in the 5-zone (middle-middle) have the lowest run value across all other competing pitch types in these contexts.

Matt Brash is one of the nastiest pitchers to have ever existed on this planet. However, he wasn’t successful in his first go around as an MLB starter (7.68 ERA) Given $, training to be a SP is still the likely goal. The fix? Adding a Cutter and a Sinker Here’s Why 🧵 1/13

Never conclude how a fastball projects to play without first contextualizing the pitcher’s release height. Pitchers with: • Average Vertical Beak (14-16 VB) • Release height’s below 5.75’ Have historically gotten significantly better results than their high slot peers.

Pitch Design Process 1. Know what a good pitch is. 2. Identify pitch variant (Gyro, Sweeper, Downer) that fits the pitcher's goals + strengths. 3. Provide initial grip/cue with highest probability of success --> Log previous sessions to objectify this! 4. Rinse & Repeat 🧵

Development of Splits/Forks seem to lag behind other pitch types in the States. • Coaches seldom threw them when they played, so they may have less confidence in troubleshooting it. • Splits are thrown with a far different "feel" at release relative to other pitch types. 🧵

Anybody who's been around 16-22 year old athletes knows that "I throw 92 with 19 inches of VB." Usually translates more accurately to "I average 88.5 with 16 inches of VB." Not to ruin optimism, but insisting your 98th percentile performance is who you are is stupid.

If I hypothetically hit this trifecta: • Coach Nebraska Basketball to a NCAA tourney win • Coach Nebraska Football to a National Championship • Become the President of the United States I would still be the 2nd most popular Langin in Central Nebraska.

Not sure who needs to see this in 2020, but here's a look at how gaining or losing 1 mph has affected MLB pitching outcomes the following season. *Minimum 100 IP in both seasons as SP* (since 2002) Inspired from this blog from @jeffwzimmerman 🔽🔽🔽

THREAD: Skye "Supination" Selinsky's SL development Given Skye's Baseline Bullpen Metrics from his first week: FF: ~75% efficiency CB: - ~12.5 ticks off the heater, -11" VB, 16" Sweep We strongly inferred that he was a natural candidate for a Sweeping Slider.

Here’s @Phillies Minor Leaguer @TommyMccollum throwing the best 0-2 splitter to a LHH you’ll see today. This pitches downward movement far surpasses that of an average split/changeup... It has more drop and horizontal movement than an avg lefty CB!

How often could a big leaguer throw a pitch in the strike zone if their life depended on it? Filtering for • 3-0 counts • Fastballs • Below Average MLB hitters (bottom 25th percentile) Pitches are thrown in the zone 63.4% (n=7077) ~70% is about as good as it gets!

Looking to add sweep to a breaking ball with minimal velocity loss? Start with switching up seam orientation. From the great state of South Dakota, @JakeGoble6 shows off his new sweeper, which he exchanges just 1-2 ticks of velocity for ~10" of Sweep.

Generally agreed upon that the best days of man's life are: The day he is married. The day he has a child. The day he graduates from the dead zone fastball. Recent graduate @RobertStock6 will be displaying this recently developed SI (with much more velo) during 1/21 Pro Day!

The importance of velocity is *generally* understood at this point. MiLB Velo is up ~1.5 ticks since 18' MLB is at just 0.7 ticks in that time frame. Developing velocity in arms that show capability of pitching is far more important than just drafting/recruiting velo.

Kris Bubic simply needs to throw a Slider. 2022 Splits: RHH: .709 OPS (313 Batters Faced) LHH: 1.074 OPS (100 BF) Career Splits: RHH: .746 (965 BF) LHH: .955 (226 BF) Among LHP with >10 Starts in 2022: OPS against RHH... 60th percentile OPS against LHH... Worst in MLB 🧵

Clay Holmes is a no-brainer Cutter ✂️candidate. He’s the 2nd RHP since 2015 (Brandon Kintzler, 2016) to have > 80% sinker usage 😲 across an entire season. While he’s unfazed by any righty hitter... His 87% sinker usage to LHH's leaves him a bit susceptible. 🧵

I have story to tell. Coaching a baseball team in a tournament with pitch count rule. PA announcer on intercom “Away team pitcher with 19 pitches that inning, brings his total to 69.” Various players in the dugout react with high amounts of adrenaline showing their approval

#AlexCobb at 1.5 fWAR is a masterclass in beating the aging curve. In 2021, projected as a 1.4 WAR player at 33, he took on Driveline training. Now, 2 years on, he's outperformed those forecasts a month before the All-Star break. Age 32 Velo: 92.5 🔥 Age 35 Velo: 94.8 🔥🔥🔥

Got a Dead Zone Heater? How practical is changing arm slot to get out of it? This is a topic I will dig into fairly deeply in a upcoming blog featuring @ruwe_1995 . Here's a look at Justin Verlander's slot change from 2017 to 2019. 🧵🧵🧵

2nd time I’ve seen someone I’ve personally known over the past 3 months get shit on for throwing 96+ out of the zone on twitter. In both instances these athletes have had their velo jump 8 and 15+ mph respectively since HS.

When I looked at this ~3 years ago I got something like this JuCo BABIP = .355 D2/3 BABIP = .340 D1 BABIP = .325 MLB BABIP = ~.295 IMO - Pitchers at poor junior colleges may be a bit undervalued by 4-years due to brutal defenses killing their ERA’s.
