A lot of commenters are treating this as some kind of parser specification. It isn't. It's a formal language semantics presented in style, which is absolutely bog standard presentation for formal language semantics, especially operational semantics.
Compilers was was known to be the hardest CS class at Cornell which was hard as it is.
We were handed a 8-page PDF at the start of sem for a language spec we'd be implementing by the end of sem, split into 6 parts.
On part 5, the median was a 0/100 and most the class failed.

It took me a while to come to terms with the fact that OCaml and Haskell ENABLE elegant, bug-free code, but that takes a strong sense of, let's say, "algebraic design," and even most OCaml and Haskell users don't have it.
I used to think languages like OCaml and Haskell are superior because they allow you writing elegant bug-free code.
Then I looked at the code written by other people in those languages 🫠

Far and away the hardest thing in my career has been to stick to my guns on:
1. Only doing typed pure FP (10+ years)
2. Only working remotely (also 10+ years)
You have a duty as an engineer to use the best tools available and compromise as little as possible.
You dictate how things are done; as the rare person able to do it. It's not career suicide, unless you have a weak, capitulating, employer dependant mentality.
