Just submitted my book ms. I have a massive headache, but am happy. Current title is Beyond the Gig: Reclaiming the Sharing Economy. Thanks to twitter friends for your links, tips, inspiration and contributions along the way....I may be coming for advice on the title....
@AlexMasPton
I am so distressed to hear this. Your father hired me at Harvard many years ago. He was in charge of junior faculty hiring and brought in the most diverse group of Assistant Professors the dept had ever seen (perhaps even to this day). 1/2
My latest is about an economic mystery that explains one of the biggest Qs about modern work:
In 1900, the avg home had no modern tech.
By 1960, it had electricity, AC, plumbing, fridges.
And all this tech saved the typical housewife ... 0 hours. Why?

cuts through a complicated thicket of claims and counter-claims re: degrowth/renewables and finds a wise path forward. A must read.
We have to build huge amounts of clean energy.
But that doesn't mean we have to continue with growth-as-usual.
Instead, we could use this moment to try and push our economies and societies in new directions.
Some thoughts
Yes. That was the message of
#theoverworkedAmerican
Why don't we use productivity growth to reduce hours instead of expand output? Now we know hours reductions are an important climate policy too
@davidgraeber
"Instead of simply working half the time, which we could've done, we seem to have collectively decided it would be a better idea to make up jobs that most of the people doing them feel are doing nothing at all" - author of Bullshit Jobs, David Graeber tells

Key variable here is working hours...gradual reduction aids de-carbonization while we reduce inequality and meet basic needs via more public provision. More time with a decent wage . Thanks
@aldatweets
A basic question more researchers could ask:
What are the concrete conditions under which most ppl in the US could consume less stuff, and work shorter hours, and yet live lives that they like a lot better?
Afaik,
@JulietSchor
is still the pathbreaking thinker here.

As the parent of a type 1 diabetic I find this one of the most revolting and terrifying pieces of evidence about the breakdown of our country. The people running these companies are reprehensible. Let's hold them to account.
@AlexMasPton
Then he put in a very progressive parental leave policy. He is such a lovely person and I so appreciated him as a colleague. Please give him my regards. I hope your parents can fight this fine and enjoy their lives. They certainly deserve it. I will follow your news. 2/2
Path-breaking article by
@veenadubal
. Many have noted the gig labor force is disproportionately Black and Latinx, this is first analysis of how gig companies' policies reflect that reality, and how companies have put in a two-tier wage system to discriminate against these workers
Should regulation be racial-neutral? Not always, definitely not when race neutrality deepens discrimination.
Great article
@veenadubal
on how a 3rd category of worker for on-demand platform workers & need to consider race seriously when regulating.
Moving to a 32-hour workweek with no loss of pay is not a radical idea. It's time for working people to benefit from advancements in AI, automation, and new technology, not just corporate CEOs and wealthy stockholders on Wall Street.
We crossed the country in a car and my father climbed this mountain in 1962. I was six years old and hiked up to the glacier. He encountered a blizzard but made it back safely. Please give Sam the chance to be brought home. Please keep searching

One of the first times I presented my research on the rise of working hours a senior faculty member at MIT was totally dismissive and questioned why study anything other than income. Boy was he wrong. Stick with what you believe in.
Fantastic thread from a fellow junior sociologist sticking w an important political economy project, even when senior ppl dismissed it.
It reminds me of all the times I've been told by senior ppl that climate might be important, but it would never get me published/a job.

This isn’t an original take but my son defended his PhD this week and not being able to hug him was painful. I know it doesn’t compare to what others are going through but these jerks have taken away so much from so many in such a deeply and equitable way.

's must-read latest on the utter insanity of the energy requirements for Bitcoin. I find it baffling that so many great people in the digital space are so enthusiastic about crypto-currencies.
Important info from
@Uber
that they are trying to pull people off public transportation. Ridership has been declining across the country. They're using predatory pricing to wipe out competition, which is illegal. Cities should start a legal strategy against ridehails.

With exploding technology and increased worker productivity, it’s time to move toward a four-day work week with no loss of pay. Workers must benefit from technology, not just corporate CEOs.

Some CA voters thought they were helping drivers. They didn't know enough to figure out that Prop 22 was taking away rights, not giving them. I had folks reach out to me genuinely baffled. Not sure how large this group was.
Wrong, so wrong. Etsy sellers set their own prices, don't work under algorithmic management, aren't subject to the same discipline, produce a wide variety of prdcts, aren't algorithmically matched. Multiple court rulings have been clear on ride-hail

You deserve to feel protected when you take an Uber or Lyft, and so does your driver.

I've had a like/hate relationship with Twitter, but it feels as if one of those emotions is growing stronger.
So I'm glad that I have a Substack project, free for all to read (and very glad that some people pay the modest, voluntary fee to keep it going)

NEW! Hallett, Stapleton & Sauder: Social science ideas become public when mediators make them objects of interest using them to make sense of news and draw connections between matters of public interest across national and local contexts
Very cool. Our research on four day work weeks suggests people sleep more. There’s a strong correlation between lower working hours and fewer carbon emissions.
I’m still stuck on this idea: investing in more sleep for climate justice. If everyone in the United States was encouraged to sleep an additional hour or two, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions could be huge. Like the size of smaller, more sustainable countries huge.
Cannot remember when I've been this happy. I know there's a lot not to be happy about but one supremely oppressive force has been vanquished.....Grew up in PA. So proud of yuns....
With everything going on now it’s hard to focus on CAProp22 but it’s a hugely consequential law which will allow companies, w their billions, to buy the laws they want when the peoples’ elected representatives won’t give them to them.

New from me: Uber and its peers are spending $200M to knock down an employment law they don’t like — and it might work. They’ve turned their apps into a battlefront for their high-dollar political campaign, a way to reach millions of eyes like never before
Story: Years ago I was deliverying something from Noam to Edward Said (who I lived next to
@Columbia
). While chatting, Said said he really liked Noam, but found him too Zionist. Never forgot that. My association w/Noam has been such a privilege.
a Zionist asks Chomsky what he thinks about the statement that Israel should not exist, and whether he is horrified by it and thinks it's anti-Semitic and genocidal.
He responds: "Actually, I agree with that." And adds that Zionists are the actual genocidal ones.

CALL NOW:
I was told the same thing by a very senior economist about my research on working hours. He said hours were not worth studying and I should just look at income. I did get a bestseller out of it.
“Lyft is deeply, deeply in the red, and it has virtually no prospect of turning profitable any time soon, if ever.”
Lyft’s IPO disclosure shows it’s not close to profitability and has no good way to get there - Los Angeles Times
Having followed his work since the 1970s, including being present at a paper he presented saying global warming would be good for agriculture I couldn’t agree more. Epic fail by the Nobel Committee.
"Nordhaus may be revered among economists, but ecologists have a very different opinion of his legacy. Many believe that the world's failure to pursue aggressive climate action over the past decades is in large part due to arguments Nordhaus has advanced."

I have been advocating and researching shorter hours as a solution to climate change since 1990. Are you really with me on this? We could use some help.
Here is a list of some things that Doughnut economists could advocate if they seriously believed that the planet is in danger and that world GDP must not increase and yet abject global poverty must be reduced.
Economists have a history of producing studies showing that policy action is more expensive than allowing climate change to progress. We need to break through interest-based politics before it's too late.
