I was born to a Jewish father and Guatemalan mother. The 1980s Guatemalan genocide was rooted in a campaign of political elimination through murder. Once a state sets out to eliminate an entire political structure, all boundaries dissolve—anyone can be marked for death.

Lula’s narrow victory is still a massive win for Brazil: for its working class, its Black and Indigenous communities, and against fascism. It’s also a win for the Amazon and the planet itself—and thus v good news for the multiracial working class of the whole world.

Manchin is a psychopath. BBB was full of giveaways for him. He strung *his own party* along for a year. Political and human treachery beyond measure. And Dems outside the squad: schmucks. They gave Manchin his own bill for free. AOC, Bowman, etc, are the few who truly get it.

We're seeing violent massacres in Israel + Colombia. Gut-check moment for US progressives. Will you pretend that there can be a social justice presidency confined to US borders, w the same (implicit + explicit) support for murderous authoritarians abroad?

When we win a Green New Deal, buses will be electric, quiet, and smooth. They’ll come every five minutes or faster. And they’ll fly through dedicated lanes like chariots of fire Our green new buses will be the Gods of the road

Housing is a human right. Being a landlord is not. The solution to the current crisis isn’t yet more evictions. It’s using public investment to move housing off the market and provide stable homes for people.

A policy solution for high gas prices, carbon pollution, & domestic manufacturing that Mayor Pete won't suggest: The govt buys cities thousands of electric buses (increasingly US-made w unions), while paying cities to paint hundreds of miles bus lanes & run the buses fare-free.

The CDC meltdown is tragic—and a good illustration of why the Green New Deal emphasizes jobs and justice, and not "believe (climate) science." In theory, it might be ideal for a pure scientific consensus beyond left and right to guide policy. But that's never going to happen.

Idk who needs to hear this but the left housing position includes building 12 million units of social housing in ten years. There’s literally a national tenants movement called #HomesGuarantee pushing that. Omar introduced a bill; it was in Bernie’s platform.

The more PDFs I read about equity, carbon, energy, and housing, the more I come back to something basic: unless govts make massive investments in low-income homes—100s of $Bs—all the consultation, frameworks, and discourse won't matter. We spend big or we die. It's that simple.

One reason we might encourage grad students to write magazine articles, have podcasts, do activism: it’s a way to develop their voice outside the severe, claustrophobic limits of peer-reviewed scholarship. Just as teaching (and TA’ng) helps develop that authoritative voice.

Funny how in all the talk about changing supply chains, reconsidering free trade, helping Europe get off gas, etc, no one’s talking about transferring green technology to the global south, or fixing trade rules so that developing economies can deliver just green transitions.

There's one simple reason someone from the Bernie/AOC wing of the Democratic Party has to run for prez in 24: to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into a campaign to reverse the multiracial working class's drift to the Republicans and/or total disengagement from politics.

Lula might be the only person in Brazil who can effectively tell the story of egalitarian green investment to the country’s vast, multiracial working class. If Lula could sell a left green transition in Brazil, it would be an incomparable gift to that country—and to humanity.
