@MillCityFutsal Haven’t done an isolated “drill” with my 10U hockey team all season. Funny though I see all kids of techniques emerging that didn’t seem to be there in the beginning of the season!

Once again Nick hits it out of the park! Important read for all coaches!!!!
🚨 New post! 🚨 Time: Our Greatest Asset, but also our Greatest Challenge Research shows that training in context develops better players, even if they do fewer repetitions. Why? Because skill isn’t just technique—it’s interaction. Link in next post. @SundayShare10

@Brian_Kelly19 @drewcarlsonhp There will be some coach who sets up an isolated drill where the player dives and shoots on an empty net after going around cones!!!!

@TDC_Hockey Besides the skill development aspect the best part of the no icing on the PK was not having to listen to parents scream ice it, especially when a kid had the puck and all kinds of space!

@HoopsEurope @Mr_Tennis_Coach I agree they can just try it and it all depends on how we teach it.

@JeffLoVecchio I remember a coach telling me that my son who was 8 at the time should play on his tournament team because scouts were going to be there. I told him “great, while they walk through the rink to the bar they might stop and say these kids are so cute”

@HoopsEurope @Mr_Tennis_Coach You can work on technique in games with intention in practice without isolating too. Scaling is a great coaching tool and the player works on the technique while also making decisions and transferring the skill

Just got Steve’s new book “Win the Inside Game” based on a recommendation from @JohnKesselUSAV Can’t wait to dive in!!!
Youth sports in the US are a disaster driven by egos & money. 70% of kids drop out of sports by 13 Fear of failure & pressure to perform from parents & coaches is one of the biggest reasons We need to do better Here's my youth sports manifesto for parents. It's important:

@schwonik @HockeyThinkTank Less tiring for sure. The so called elite 7u may have been just skating longer and the kid who started at 6 will be better by the end of the season.

@BenoitGBelanger As young as 8U. Players can learn skills in game like environments. Just scale them to fit their level of ability. Use ringettes, tag games for skating, 1 v 1, 2 v 1 , 2 v 2 Games with intention. Maybe less so called reps but reps that are actually transferable.

@TatoGo60 @HockeyThinkTank @ReviewOfHockey But those rec programs need to be well run and create opportunity for those kids to not fall behind due to less ice time and poor coaching. Unfortunately not always the case.
