Meeting the Minister tomorrow about actually with

Equity re funding & placement opportunity- something I’ve pushed for years to remove the bottleneck that early career psychs face.
The more joined up & collaborative thinking the better
Final hours as President
@PsychSocIreland
. V Proud of central focus:early career psychs, recruitment, panels & equality. Pushed back against bigotry, spoofers & poor practice. Bigger job than anticipated, can’t please em all, nor did I try 😉but did best I could.

Commitment from
@PsychSocIreland
Council to look at the current fee structure for unwaged/low paid early career psychologists, postgraduate students, researchers and assistant psychologists. I feel current fee of €115 is too high. Undergrad fee is €25. Suggestions welcome
How it started, how it’s going.
Immensely talented people get on to training from hard work & dedication not how they look. Other immensely talented peeps take longer, not for reasons of readiness more supply & demand.
Others don’t cos they are likely dicks - don’t be a dick
Looking on with dismay recently where the term psychologist is used in media, by some who speak above competence, beyond the evidence or unethically.
@PsychSocIreland
has recommended that the general term ‘psychologist’ be protected by

Was surprised when this needed to be said in 2019, even more surprised that it needs to be said in 2021.
But this couldn’t be any clearer: So called ‘Conversion Therapy’ is wrong abhorrent pseudoscience
As someone who started life here, though not a mother and baby home: a place where a large amount of children disappeared (to America?), and where access to birth cert and info is still denied, I find the decisions of the Dail & to be very wrong and shameful

First Christmas Eve without my dad. Was just about holding it together until I had to mash the spuds. Took 37 years for it to be my job, and I so didn’t want to. Strange how the small things catch you up 😟

The suggestion that people would be safer if people with mental heath difficulties were ‘taken off the streets ‘ or ‘put in institutions’ is wrong, stigmatizing and “a return to redundant and antiquated practices that are anathema to the recovery-led models of care we have today”
The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) responds to
@realDonaldTrump
recent comments on gun violence and mental illness. The press release can be read in full here:
A great first step towards equality for psychology training. Something
@PsychSocIreland
have fought for over many years, often opposed by our peers. Thankfully things have changed, but work will continue to get funding for trainee Ed Psychs - won’t rest till we get this

Best of luck to applicants to a good course
V uneasy however with the practice of using Leaving Cert results in selection criteria
Psych has probs with diversity & LC results are impacted by disability, poverty, ethnicity & more
Horrible sense of elitism using LC to select?
“Routinely blaming mass shootings on mental illness is unfounded and stigmatizing. Research has shown that only a very small percentage of violent acts are committed by people who are diagnosed with, or in treatment for, mental illness.”
As our nation tries to process the unthinkable yet again, it is clearer than ever that we are facing a public health crisis of gun violence & we must focus on finding evidence-based solutions to address it.

Thank you
@MaryButlerTD

@roinnslainte
officials for a very positive meeting today to discuss importance of primary care psychology, equity of funding for all psychology disciplines & recruitment & retention. We look forward to continuing to work with you in the future
Laughable how the Irish ‘left’ jump on populist ideas like no property tax or no water charges. This is the total opposite of every other left wing party that I’ve come across. I believe I should pay for both and this money be used to fund services like mental health.
#ge2020
Excellent & timely
@emer_currie1
who I know had a genuine interest in facilitating access to psychologists for the public. Minister
@MaryButlerTD
spoke in similar terms when I met her so very optimistic. Rept. published Jan tho, recommends pay equality
To break backlogs in mental health,we have to break down the barriers to getting psychologists onto the frontline

A personal hero of mine.

Terrible
I’ve had more eating difficulty related referrals in the last 3 years than in the previous 8 combined
only in the last few months have we had specialist dietetic support
New: The HSE has again diverted funding away from the national eating disorder treatment plan.
The plan launched 3 years ago
Every year since, money has been diverted away from it.

All seems like it shouldn’t have to be said but apparently it does:
If someone trusts you to send you, or let’s you take private images and you share them: it’s not their fault, you have broken their trust = it’s on you
If you coerce or trick someone into sending = it’s on you
2) Hard fought win for myself, HSE & many others
@PsychSocIreland
V different from suggestions of HPSI (group of managers purporting to represent psych) who in doc from FOI wanted HSE to charge trainee psychs for working for free on frontline with huge waiting lists- disgusting
Very impressed with

Such terribly sad news regarding Vicky Phelan, an incredibly strong and brave patient advocate & dedicated mum.
An amazing spirit which was remarkably stronger in person than it appeared on tv, a wicked sense of humor too.
Thoughts and sympathies are with her family.
Pointing out serious inadequacies in psychology recruitment 4 some time
Ironically a new panel recruitment for Senior Psychs launched yest - very specialist positions filled blindly via scores from rote learned responses given to managers who might not have practiced in years 🤷🏻♂️
@MaryButlerTD
says there are challenges in relation to recruitment and retention. It is frustrating for local areas if they're without psychiatrists/psychologists. It can be very difficult to recruit for specific posts
Great work from
@PsychSocIreland
Trainees are such a vulnerable group and to have training impacted at this time. Hope services/managers/employers don’t shame themselves in the future by placing unnecessary barriers on these cohorts when they seek employment.

Great family, job I love, friends and decent health, yet weirdly scary day.
Hoping the birthday coffee, whiskey, beer and beef can knock the edges off a mild-moderate existential crisis. 😂😂
Saddening, maddening and heartbreaking scenes from the US
This demonstrates true leadership and genuine human compassion.
We should never be scared to call out discrimination and wrong doing.

elected today to be my right hand man in 2019 and to lead the society into its 50th year in 2020. Transparent and accessible on twitter and an aiming for further member engagement and leading change in the profession.
So very true. Trainees and AP’s shouldn’t be expected to fill gaps in services. Time given to nurture and develop talent will result in a well balanced and competent colleague.
COGNITIVE OVERLOAD : when a trainee is learning a new technique, they will reach saturation point much sooner than their experienced trainer
Add in the pressure of being watched/assessed & overload can occur even sooner.
Encouragement, patience & a short break work wonders
A fascinating thread describing personal insights into attention disorders in adults and the personal experience of psychopharmacology intervention. An essential read for those working with attention disorders and even more so for the many who quickly dismiss the concept.

One of the many unjust situations that psychology in ireland has propagated and perpetuated over the years. The diversity within these training cohorts is more obvious than other, but the personal sacrifices are larger and from experience the resultant debt isn’t good for ones MH

Always wary of anyone labeled or worse self labeled as an expert. I have found this leads to entrenched ideas and a resistance to being incorrect. Sure I’ve expertise, but this allows me to recognize what I know or don’t, and keeps me open to learning from when I get it wrong.
