Unless we develop the capacity to sit with students who are upset or distressed, all our school wellbeing efforts are just toxic positivity and gaslighting
I am at my wits end 😩 trying to get
@HSELive
to provide service for my brother.
Mental Health won’t provide service ‘cos he has intellectual disability.
Intellectual Disability won’t provide service ‘cos he has complex MH needs. 1/
I really don’t want schools to close since they are a lifeline for many children & a staple in communities.
BUT with cases and hospitalisations skyrocketing, it seems madness that children and staff would go back next week
It’s hard to imagine school buildings reopening (for all children/for any) on Jan 11th with covid now so rampant
So what’s the plan
@Education_Ire
@NormaFoleyTD1
?
We have such competent, committed school personnel, if only they were given some advance, realistic guidance
I’m gobsmacked TBH
What’s the logic for removing essential workers from prioritisation list?
They think they’ll win public approval? They are out of touch. The public want teachers, SNAs, ECEC staff and Gardaí protected. I suspect this will b reversed, but damage already done
I am beyond EXCITED to announce the fabulous

I was nervous about doing this, but thanks

Education as part of our M.Ed. and research progs next year
@MU_Education
I think it is first of its kind in Ireland!
Inspiration from authors of these great books and lots more besides
I’m really concerned by images of re-opened schools abroad & talk here of bans on soothers & comfort blankets in crèches. Small children have developmental needs for nurturance, comfort, proximity, touch. We need to put children’s wellbeing at the centre of decision making
.
@GaryGannonTD
is the first politician in Ireland I’ve heard advocating for trauma informed approaches in schools 👏👏
I’m excited to start a trauma-informed education module in

SNAs will need to provide trauma informed support for many children when schools reopen. I hope

take cognisance of that.

Caring for family member with complex mental health difficulties, learning disability, complex trauma..wish it got easier, but 20 yrs of this, still the lack of joined-up thinking across MH and ID services & so little trauma awareness…so disillusioned right now 😖
Delighted to share this paper which combines 3 of our passions: nature/outdoors, trauma-informed values & education 🌳💗 🏫
When it matters most: a trauma-informed, outdoor learning programme to support children’s wellbeing during COVID-19 and beyond

Research shows proximity, touch, interaction with dogs benefits emotional and psychological wellbeing.
I wonder is there research being done on this pilot project..?
More school dogs please 🐾💕🙏
A Co Meath secondary school is enjoying the benefits of its newest arrival - a three-year-old black Labrador retriever. The dog joined the ranks of St Peter's Community College as part of a 'Community Dog' pilot scheme from the Guide Dogs for the Blind |
The ‘schoolification’ of childhood is a BIG issue, contributing to ⬆️ anxiety and other MH issues
It’s kinda ironic that instead of letting kids free play, we sit them in classrooms & teach them about ‘wellbeing’ adding to an already packed curriculum

Not a fan of the deficit-based ‘catch-up’ narrative.
If this goes ahead can we affirm and celebrate young people’s strengths, ingenuity, coping strategies thru difficult circumstances and be responsive to their social & emotional needs, not just academic

It’s so hard to imagine the courage, tenacity, pain, vulnerability it takes to do this; putting yourself out there day after day. Our institutions treat survivors appallingly
2 weeks standing outside St John Ambulance HQ, and I feel like shit. One of the lads this morning told me he couldn't do it anymore. I respect his honesty, but I also think the public can do more to ensure this report is published. Write to your local politician

I’m fine.
But turn your phone upside down to read what this young person is actually saying !
Our own discomfort with difficult emotion can prompt kids to suppress their true feelings, but holding it all inside leads to much bigger problems
Thx

This is the last thing the victims, families & school of this afternoon’s attack need.
They need reassurance that the world is safe, that people are essentially good, and that they will have time & space to process what happened. This only compounds their trauma 💔

Wellbeing and Mental Health in Schools - Great review & recommendations: A systemic, whole-school approach to mental health and well-being in schools in the EU -
Hope policymakers take note!
@NormaFoleyTD1
💯 Let’s just give our kids space to BE this summer; not to DO, not to achieve, not to catch-up, not to learn this or that, just to BE who they are. And if we can do this for our kids, their future wellbeing will look after itself x
While some of these ideas are excellent - visit museums, read more etc- the basic premise underlying it is infuriating.Children need holidays, need unstructured play, they need time to explore,be bored & do nothing. Relentless comparison & competition is unnecessary & damaging.

Trauma informed peeps
What are the biggest misconceptions you encounter about trauma-informed practice?
Eg.
Misconception 1. TIP accepts/ excuses behaviour difficulties in schools leading to chaotic environment,
2. We cannot be trauma-informed, we’re not therapists/psychs..etc
Very important letter on the educational needs of children in care
Trauma-informed and attachment-aware policies are needed. Attention also needed re admissions policies, therapeutic supports & more robust tracking and monitoring
To add, yes we should address harm caused by alcohol; no, we don’t do it by controlling women.
This is one of the problems with traditional approaches to health promotion-the focus on changing individual behaviours rather than the determinants of health, like trauma poverty etc
How many more children do we need to see plucked from rubble, terrified, screaming for their mamas, and these are the ‘lucky’ ones who’ve survived so far. How many more before our world leaders say enough 💔💔💔
Covid presented a golden opportunity to reform this grossly unfair, outdated exam. It should have been the silver lining
But no, our minister of education thinks the Leaving Cert is what education is for. More important than life and death it would seem 😫🤦♀️
A move to continuous assessment & reduced emphasis on final exams are welcome, but if we continue with the messaging that students’ self worth depends on their achievements, then we just drag out the stress over a longer period
Very important study. 1 in 6 children come to school from homes where there are alcohol problems. Report recommends a framework for trauma-informed schools in Ireland.

The pandemic has illuminated many fault lines in our education system. Reliance on outdated Leaving Cert is certainly one of them. Would love to see a citizens’ assembly to focused on this
