It is with no small amount of pride that I can announce we are at capacity and won't be taking on any new cafe customers. We've surpassed any aspirations I had and I'm very grateful.
We're a coffee company. Hand on heart we can say we've brought coffees to Ireland from some of
We'll be roasting coffee 4 years on May 1st. We've funded 2 foot bridges in Colombia, a wet mill in Peru, donated 1% sales each month to Women's Aid and will give half a ton of coffee to hospitals this year. We've 5 full time staff and make profit. Big business could do loads.
Until yesterday I’d no idea there’s a tunnel under James’s St linking Guinness sites. Built in 1895 by designer who worked on the London Underground. 127 years on and still no underground network in Dublin.
Email from Snapchat person with 150,000 followers whose interests are lifestyle and skincare. They’d love to mention us in a video in return for free stuff. Influencers are an absolute tragedy.
Just tried to lodge a cheque
@AskAIB
. Was told I can’t as it’s a ‘cashless’ branch. Explained a cheque isn’t cash but that doesn’t matter. I have to walk to Grafton St. Inconvenient for me but might be very difficult for others. What a joke of a bank they’ve become.
There’s a lot of UK chains on Dawson St so it was an incredibly generous move by
@Sproutfoodco
to give the front of their shop rent free to two brilliant young Irish women to set up Fable Bakery. Please support if you can. They’ve worked hard for this. The coffee is good too:).
My wife is starting a new business called Síológ. It’’s a place you’ll find sustainable kids clothing from multiple Irish only brands under one roof. She’s launching in a few weeks and her Insta is
@siolog
.ie . for anyone who has an interest.
Was contacted by a cafe in Vienna. A friend had brought them a bag of our coffee back from a holiday in Ireland and we're now talking about them stocking us. It's a nice way to end a Friday.
The great homogenisation of Dublin continues. Soon there’ll be no independents left. Can’t compete on rents with low cost base, mass produced chain blandness: Pret A Manger to open 20 shops in Ireland and hire 500 people via
@IrishTimes
We’re roasting 3 years today and I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved. We run our business uniquely to any other in Ireland and I wanted to lay out how/why. Any RT’s to spread word would be great.
A challenge for us is letting people know we exist and why we're different. We're one of the roasters in Ireland & last year donated 16% of our profits to good causes. You might not drink coffee but an RT costs nothing and helps us reach people who do.
Lots of people spend at least €36 a month to buy a kilo of our coffee. If they could "stream" coffee we'd be out of business. I used to buy loads of music but no longer own a record/cd player so am going to start spending a minimum of €36 a month on Irish artists on Band Camp.
Can't explain how much of a saviour social media has been to our business. We're too small for a PR company so it lets us get our story out. It's hard for all right now but if not for orders from Twitter people things would be far worse. Genuine thanks to all.
If anyone wants coffee sacks we have loads and give them away free because they’re basically our waste. You will however need to collect them from us in Dublin 8.
This is beyond belief. He'd previously served 15 years for pre-meditated murder. We've a huge problem in Ireland with sentencing in relation to violence against women: Man who tried to suffocate his wife gets suspended sentence via
@IrishTimes
It's our last working day of 2021. This year we funded another bridge in Colombia, a wet mill in Peru and donated our highest ever amount to
@Womens_Aid
. We couldn't have done this without amazing support so thank you. We intent to fund a third bridge in 2022.
We’ve given an average of 30 bags of coffee a week to hospitals since pandemic began. It’s risen to 40 in last 2 months and isn’t included in % we donate. I say this as a thanks to our customers. We couldn’t sustain this business model if people weren’t so supportive.
The only time I ever ate Pret a Manger was at an airport as it was the least worst option. So many independents in the city doing things that are miles better. I really don't understand queuing for something that is at best average.
We’re 2 today. We exceeded our target of donating 2% turnover on coffee sales to good causes hitting about 2.5%. To celebrate we’ll now be giving 1% to staff because they deserve it. This 3% total equates to approx 22% of profits. More info on our Insta post.
Seen lots of people get upset about prices in cafes/rest lately. In vast majority of cases it's not profiteering. Places are struggling and many closing. Costs have gone through roof. Our coffee costs have gone up about 20% in a year due to currency alone. It's the awful reality.
We’re not doing Jeff Bezos style Black Friday. Instead we’ll donate 10% of all web sales from now until midnight Friday 26th to
@Womens_Aid
. My wife
@siolog_ie
will do same but give 10% to
@LauraLynnHouse
. Any RT’s appreciated.
#supportlocal
Like every other year, we won’t be partaking in Black Friday. As a business we want to be the complete opposite of Amazon and their like. From midnight Thursday till midnight Sunday we’ll increase our usual 1% donation of all web sales to
@Womens_Aid
to 10% until midnight Sunday.
We started donating coffee to a local hospital on a weekly basis when the pandemic began with a second local hospital added last year. It's our aim to give half a ton of coffee this year because hospitals aren't just for pandemics.
Bit scant on the detail right now but Dublin is finally going to have a coffee festival early next year. It will feature many of the top roasters in the country and I think it's going to be a really great event.
Got our accounts for 2023 back a little while ago. They show that last year we donated 30% of our profits to good causes. This figure doesn’t include the 1% of all revenue shared with staff. We’re profitable and viable. Our model works for us. Thanks to all who buy our coffee!
It’s our 4th birthday today. We started roasting coffee with the aim of running our business uniquely to any other. Here’s how/why. Any RT’s to spread our story would be greatly appreciated.
In 2022 we beat our pledge & redistributed over 3% of money people spent on our coffee between
@Womens_Aid
, origin projects and staff. We also donated over €21,000 of coffee to local hospitals. We’ve a staff of 5 full timers. Plan is more of same in 23.
Just like last year. And the year before that. And… We won’t be doing Black Friday. Instead we’ll donate 10% of all web sales to
@Womens_Aid
from midnight Thursday 24th through to midnight Sunday 27th.
Been invited to talk to over 400 second year Trinity business students about how/why we run our business differently to others. Knew I’d get into Trinity someday. Even if it is just by Zoom.
More revelations about a hospitality business treating staff badly. They come out every now and then. I've seen businesses lauded"great guys" when ex staff will tell you they're not. Maybe it's time to speak to staff/suppliers about reality before people are called "food heroes".
Our wholesale deliveries are over 90% zero waste and are carried out using cans we refill. We've just bought an electric van. Next task is a recyclable bag which we're having designed. We're trying.
Yes Twitter can be awful but as a small business with a marketing budget of zero it’s been amazing in helping spread word of what we do. I don’t think we’d have been on national radio or appeared in national newspapers over last 3 years if it weren’t for it.
In addition to below, our staff also get 1% of sales and were given 6 extra days holiday this year. I want us to be the most progressive business in the country but we need help spreading word. If any journos fancy putting us on their magazine cover feel free to get in touch...:)
Came close to leaving Twitter a few months back but having paid staff wages with 1% bonus of yearly sales, announced funding for new bridge, made Women’s Aid donation and paid our rent I’m glad I didn’t. Support on here has made all those things possible. Thank you.
Mail from a Michelin start restaurant in Singapore about our coffee. Probably entirely impractical but very nice to be asked and just shows the power of social media as it's the only way they could have heard about us.
Hit for over €3,000 a couple of weeks ago as a cafe we supplied shut. It’s a good chunk of a salary so very happy our Coffee Club has sold out this month. Having a direct side of the business where money comes in before the coffee leaves is massive for a small business like ours
If you’re still reading then thanks. Thanks also to our customers both wholesale and from the site and a special thanks to Damian of
@DarkWoodsCoffee
and
@HowardCoffee
. I think we have an authentic business and I hope authenticity is worth supporting.
Guys in the roastery we’re asking what samples we should send to a cafe in Vienna. Told them ‘This means nothing to me’. Not even a chuckle. They’ve never heard of Ultravox. I am old.
Would people use/be interested in a ‘zero waste’ collection facility/option on our site? Basically you’d buy the coffee online and bring a container to the roastery that we’d fill?
Been a while since I’ve tweeted about this energy guzzling, anti pedestrian ugly ad board on Cuffe Street. I guess Dublin City Council just like to put revenue before any other considerations.
"We donated 16% of our profits last year. You can buy our coffee here". 2-4 RT's every week
"We're giving away free coffee sacks" 54 bajillion RT's.
Might be time to quit this ethical business malarky and make this a full time free coffee sack focused account:).
So 9 years on and we’re rebranding as Imbibe Coffee Roasters. Roastery will open in Dolphins Barn in May. 90% of output will be speciality organic coffee and we’ll be donating 1% of all coffee sales to
@Womens_Aid
.
Had a guy ask a "genuine question". He felt giving staff 1% of our revenue was "performative" and would I not just give them pay rises each year. Explained (very politely) they'd gotten two rises last year, an extra 6 days off and a rise this year. He blocked me:).
Coffee Club has sold out. 300 bags in 3 hours from arguably the world’s best origin, Panama. We raised about €6000 and will be donating it all to
@Womens_Aid
and
@LauraLynnHouse
. Thanks to everyone who bought.
We’ve been lucky to grow our business this year. Much of it is down to people here tweeting about us. It’s how many others have discovered us. I’m not sure people realise the power of the medium but it’s been a huge help in uncertain times so thanks to all.
Just transferred funds to build a second footbridge in Colombian co-op we buy from. Photo shows how kids are currently accessing their school playground. This is what buying our coffee helps do.
Really sorry to see Loam in Galway closing. I hadn't been there in years as I haven't been to Galway but it was an absolutely top quality restaurant deserving of its star.I've said the next 3 months will be hard for people so please try to support local & independent if you can.
Our Head of Quality Monika is now a certified Q Grader. There were only 6 in the country now 7!). It’s the highest branch on the coffee tree and I’m so so proud of her. She worked really hard to get this.
We were 3 on May 1st which means staff get other half of their 1% of our sales this month (first half was at Christmas). If we grow they get paid more. That’s how things should work. That’s fair.
As a business we donate 2% of sales to good causes and give 1% to staff. In 2021 it worked out at 16% of our profits. We've brought genuine world class coffees to Ireland so if you need coffee this week and think our business model is worth supporting.
If businesses like ours, not run purely for profit, are to exist (let alone thrive) we need support from like minded advocates in the media. Otherwise it’s even more difficult. Thanks so much
@EllieD798
of
@businessposthq
for being such an advocate. It means a lot.
Had our busiest weekend on the website in the history of Imbibe. With the 10% of sales combined with 100% of proceeds for our "infused coffees" early last week, we'll be making perhaps our biggest ever donation to Women's Aid on Wednesday. Thanks to everyone for the support.
If anyone wants coffee sacks we have loads and give them away free because they’re basically our waste. You will need to collect them from us in Dublin 8 though.
We’ll soon announce a project we’re funding at the all female co-op we buy from in Peru. In our 3rd year we’ll get closer to donating 3% of our sales than the 2% we’ve committed to. It’s an entirely sustainable way for us to run our business.
My 10 year olds have expressed an interest in taking over Imbibe when I retire. Their conditions are for the roastery to become dog friendly, they open a dog friendly cafe and the business gets renamed as Imbark.
Going to close from Christmas Eve until New Year for 1st time. Should have done it last year as were incredibly quiet during that period. Really looking forward to having over a week off. It's been very difficult to switch off for any amount of time these last few years.
@mistereatgalway
@cavagalway
If I were in a restaurant and a group of people from America came in I think I'd most probably leave. You should not be put in this situation. It's grossly unfair on those already struggling to keep their business going.
If as a small business of 5 full time staff, we can pay part timers who come to pack our coffee the living wage, full timers well in excess of it with a small pension then large business can easily afford to do the same. We seem to have accepted the lie they can't.
In recognition of the great people I work with it’s now company policy that all full timers get a Friday off every two months to help create a nicer work/life balance. They deserve it. They are the business.
If you're back working form home we'd be most grateful if you'd consider us for your coffee needs. Lots of options on the site and 2% of our sales go to good causes. Please try to support local business.
Frustrating to hear some describe how Imbibe is run as ‘marketing’. If it was marketing we’d donate 2% of profits not sales. The financial difference is huge but it’s not a distinction people pay a lot of attention to and I don’t think we’d sell any less had we gone with profits.
This year inside No. 9 we will:
Donate over €30,000 of coffee between 3 local hospitals.
Fund a third bridge at the ASOPEP Co-op in Colombia.
Give over 1% of our sales to
@Womens_Aid
Share 1% of our sales with staff.
Continue to bring ‘world’s best coffees to Ireland.
Never thought we'd get mentioned in a Colombian newspaper. Here's a picture of the bridge we funded which opened on December 19th of 2019. The tree trunk you see underneath is how people had been crossing.
It’s the roasteries fifth birthday. We’ve tried to be one of the most uniquely run businesses in Ireland and have come a long way from Imbibe mark 1 which was basically me selling coffee from my car.
As a business we donate 1% of sales to
@Womens_Aid
each month. Until midnight Sunday we'll increase this to 10% of all web sales so if you're in the market for coffee it's a good time to buy.
I'll never quite get used to the surprise/exasperation of bigger companies when you won't agree to jump through silly hoops for promises of big amounts of business. I like to think we do what we do well. We've no desire for exponential growth or being much bigger than we are.
Was just on the Jennifer Zamparelli show
@RTE2fm
. It was mildly terrifying as I'm not good at these things but would like to thank them for giving me the opportunity. As I've said before for a business like ours to flourish, people need to know why we're different.
Someone is leaving the Hotel California. It had to happen sometime. 4.5 years in and our first ever staff loss. Natalia is leaving as her apartment lease ends soon and as someone in her 20’s doesn’t find Dublin affordable. Shes right. She’s been amazing and we’ll miss her.
If you're back working form home we'd be most grateful if you'd consider us for your coffee needs over the next three weeks. Lots of options on site. 2% of our sales go to good causes.
We’ve always been a bit rubbish on marketing and still have no ‘merch’ as we’ve been very focused on sourcing the best coffee. We do have our own sellotape now though. Big day for the business:).
We give 1% sales to Women's Aid, 1% to coffee origin projects, 1% to staff. We'll donate €30,000 of coffee to local hospitals in 2023 and we've consistently brought coffees of a level that didn't exist here before we started. If you need coffee this week
Just got our accounts for 2021. Between the 2% of sales we donate to good causes and the 1% to staff we gave 16% of our profits last year. This is sustainable and I'm really happy about that.
We’re a coffee roaster. Like most roasters we use gas. Most recent bill is 6 times previous one. Coffee is traded in dollars so we’re also down 20% on FX from a year ago with coffee prices around a 10 year high. It’s a difficult for small businesses.
Never really thought I cared about fame or famous folk but two properly world famous people have taken to buying our coffee on a regular basis and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a bit of a kick out of it.
Imbibe is 14 but only roasting our own coffee 5 years in May. I'd like us to get a little bigger but not by much. If we stay exactly where we are I'll still be really happy. I'm fortunate its gone beyond any aspirations I had and knowing when you have enough is a good thing.
Really happy to see Griolladh’s first bricks and mortar store on Thomas Street. Genuinely sound people and great food (and coffee:)), if you happen to be in the area.
Cleaning out cupboards and found this. Wife denying any and all links. Old child minders being put in the frame. A tribunal of Inquiry is being established.
Massive thanks to
@Zara_Hedderman
for writing about us in
@thejournal_ie
. A small business like ours needs help spreading the word about how it's genuinely possible to run a business differently and having like minded people promote us is amazing.
We’ve donated 1% of our sales to
@Womens_Aid
since we began roasting coffee. For this week we added 10% of all web sales. Hoping to make our biggest monthly donation to them yet. Still going till midnight. A massive thanks to all.

‘Performative’, ‘marketing’, ‘virtue posting’. I’ve very munch learned you can’t please all of the people all of the time but this is what we actually do and I’m reasonably proud of it.
