@ChrisO_wiki
Chris, you post some of the best content on the war in Ukraine. This is really interesting, and quite unbelievable that a murderer would be even considered for a funeral at the cultural centre of a village.

Thank you for updating us, Vicky. But please don’t feel you need to keep us updated. Allow yourself to focus on helping Charlie get better, and know we’re all rooting for you both.
We’ll all be here when you both get back (if Twitter hasn’t died!)
Say what you want about Shamina Begum, but the fact that the second most common reaction to the news that her (entirely innocent) child has died says a lot about our country at the moment 😔

While I’m not usually bothered about this sort of stuff, why is he mixed race? Man was the most vanilla ice cream, ready salted crisps white bread pasty white man in all of history.

Berets look excellent, can be stuffed anywhere and soldiers are proud of them. It’s probably the last bit of uniform most soldiers would ever wish to part with.
You’re proposing a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist!

How is this disgusting? It’s just a recognition that the West got rich from fossil fuels, which has caused climate change, which has caused flooding/drought etc in developing nations with no £ to mitigate its effect.
It’s not hating Britain, it’s taking responsibility.
@Decis_
And they weren’t wrong: The UK performs far better than France on this. Our PM is Hindu, our last Chancellor of the Exchequer is black, and our nation’s most popular dish is Chicken Tikka Masala.
We’re not perfect, but we’re doing a lot better than most.
Fantastic article, this. Really highlights how there is often a big gap between the dreams and grandiose visions of policymakers, and the often gritty reality of actually implementing them
Feels like a no brainier for the UK to act here. Send troops to Guyana as a “trip wire” and deploy a carrier to the region. Make clear to the Venezuelans that the UK stands behind Guyana’s territorial integrity.

please stop referring to Army Reservists as “civilians”. They are military personnel, and they deploy on operations alongside their regular personnel as an integrated part of the British Army.
The NHS is completely BROKEN
It WASNT broken by COVID/Ukraine/inflation(*delete excuse)
It was broken by deliberate CHOICES to break it
RT if you want this/next government to make CHOICES to properly fund the NHS, reward its staff & provide better healthcare for UK population
UOTC pumps out carbon copy young officers, filtering out those from more diverse (in every way, class/race/thought) backgrounds. They’re often great at soldiering, because that’s all the UOTC does, but I’d argue the Officer Corps suffers for that lack of diversity.
@nicholadrummond
Nicholas, I enjoy following you. But how do you square your calling for the MOD to have a proper procurement strategy with your own calls on Twitter for it to buy another new bit of shiny kit every few days?

Had a wobble earlier. Walked past Ukrainian protestors and quietly said “Slava Ukraini” (Glory to Ukraine), and about 15 of them shouted it right back to me with full force.
Really brought home that these poor people are watching their country be destroyed.

But what does creating an inclusive environment for people who don’t want to/can’t consume alcohol got to do with closing pubs at 9pm?
We’re going to end up with a single, short high speed rail line between London that costs £71bn rather than a much longer and much more useful high speed rail network that costs £90bn aren’t we.

Good point, for a second there I totally forgot Doctor Who was fictional.
In which case, why not have future episodes where Mansa Musa and Mao Zedong are played by white actors. No problem with that, right?
@maj_retd_fox
Hi Andrew, I’m not sure it’s accurate to use nominal GDP statistics over Russia. Far better to use Purchasing Power Parity to give an accurate reflection of the size of its economy. Italy couldn’t sustain the kind of military spending Russia can.

All of them. For example, the UK's first F35s were deployed on exercise alongside the USAF and French Air Force earlier this month. Wildcats already deployed throughout RAF and RN, and same with Merlin.
urgent reminder: if you're British and have reached a point today where you're discussing arcane rules for who can and can't be the Dem VP candidate but you can't name who the current Irish Taioseach is, now is the time for you to log off, take a walk, do yoga, touch grass (etc.)

I can’t wait until planning rules are loosened and you have to watch the Green distribution centre being built in right in front of you.
This makes for grim reading. The prognosis for Ukraine is utterly bleak, the fall of Avdiivka simply laid bare what has been true for some time: Ukraine doesn't have enough kit, enough ammunition or enough men.
The Russians, meanwhile, are learning and growing.
War isn't a 100-meter dash; it's a marathon.
Months ago, as with Bakhmut, Avdiivka fell after intense fighting, but one thing remains common: the Russians can be delayed, but they never cease their advance. The fall of Avdiivka signifies that even in defensive positions and
While we all bemoan the current state of the Army, I do fundamentally agree with this. We’re *great* at operating.
We’re shit at strategy and procurement. But the isn’t the fault of our people, who perform admirably despite being failed repeatedly by the powers that be.

No to mention that, as a junior minister with the veterans portfolio, Johnny Mercer wasn’t in a position to receive information about all operational activity. Especially under Ben Wallace, who liked to sideline junior ministers on sensitive issues.

Good riddance. Perhaps more politicians who'd put people's lives on the line for ideological reasons should resign, then we'd all be better off.
My heart just bleeds for Grace Milane and her family right now. She had her whole life ahead of her, only for it to be cruelly taken from her during what should have been the time of her life 😥

That assumes that Putin is being fed accurate information by his very corrupt subordinates. Ironically, this is probably far more effective and likely to reach him than going through their chain of command.

Depends what you mean by a real word! Apparate comes from the French verb “apparâitre” (to appear). JK Rowling is a fluent French speaker, so likely borrowed from French.

With respect, Patrick, not sure I agree. Ukraine is heavily dependent on foreign aid, and the key to that is to continue to win the narrative and portray Russia as a barbaric pariah state vs Democratic Ukraine.
What you advocate would be an operational win but a strategic loss.

But they did. That borrowing was offset by higher economic growth and a reduction in Defence spending as a % of GDP in the post war era - which kept that debt sustainable.
It was good policy, but neither of those things are likely now. So what is she going to do about it?

It not only shows arrogance on their part, but that they feel threatened. The UK Defence Journal and vibrant blogging community have been an answer to often very sketchy professional defence journalism. You're doing great mate, don't let it knock you
