Yesterday was a big day! After over a year building this retaining wall, I asked
@localhuman
to cap it off with one of his awesome benches.
He did not disappoint.
Kyle Anderson said he'd love to be back, but isn't sure what the future holds.
"My family's here. My son is on the spectrum. He's doing really well here in the MN school system, and his development is really key. And he's doing so well, so, you know, that plays a part into it."
This post misses the entire point of removing I-94, which is to reduce the number of car trips like this.
Removing I-94 would discourage the sort of thoughtless driving that's common today, which wastes time, pollutes our environment, and spoils communities.
This map in a new StreetsMN post kind of says everything to me: if the alternatives to I-94 are people driving farther and impacting more residents, that's not a win.
Don't remove 94, make it fit the context better — reduce lanes, prioritize transit, and install retaining walls.
Taxer of the rich; protector of the poor; closer of loopholes; funder of governments. A historic tax bill brought to you by the incredible leadership of our Tax Queen,
@RepAishaGomez

LONG MAY SHE REIGN.
What a profound honor to chair the House tax committee this year.
TBH I was shocked when
@melissahortman
trusted me to serve our caucus in this way. I hope I made us proud boss lady💜
Beyond the headlines there are SO many great things to be proud of in this bill.

The
@nytimes
allowed this picture of Goebbels to run as the banner accompanying a Bret Stephens op-ed, in which he likens himself to a jew in the holocaust (because he was called a 'bedbug'.)
Trying to avoid the NYT hatewagon but it's getting tough. What an embarrassment.
A 16 y/o was killed in a hit-and-run in downtown last night. I biked through about 30 min prior and felt mostly safe.
I hate the bad faith attacks on Minneapolis, but we face a number of challenges due to failed leadership, and a culture of unsafe anti-social driving is up there
When you piss off the Wall Street Journal you are doing something very right.
A proud day for Minnesotans who know Fortune 500 corporate tax dodging is bad, actually.
Minnesota Senate just passed a good tax bill. It limits tax cuts for the wealthy, provides relief to low-income families, and ends multinational corporate tax avoidance.
A fair tax code looks good on Chair Rest.
Had the good fortune of hanging with a few amazing MN legislators at the
@stateinnovation

@leighfinke
stands to be recognized as the first openly trans legislator in state history.
The future in Minnesota feels very bright.

Except the absence of widespread looting does kind of refute claims that entire cities are burning. Whereas no one is saying that police murder is occuring everywhere you look. Rather they assert that any number of police murders are far too many.

Soups and stews are inherently leftist, IMO. Cheaper to make and tend to be cooked in large quantities making them easier for sharing/feeding the masses.

seriously though, minneapolis is so lucky to have john edwards sharing his creativity and creating this amazing community event every year on top of everything he does to keep us informed on politics. i’m grateful to call him a friend (and employer lmao), thank you again john! 🐈
In Senate hearing on free college, Zach Duckworth just asked
@OmarFatehMN
if students getting free college might be less likely to graduate because they don't have "skin in the game."
Sen. Fateh: "I would argue they're already getting skinned alive." 💀💀💀
@The_Law_Boy
It’s the little ones they add that drive me nuts.
$350/month for diapers
$400/month for clothes
$300/month to charity
$200+/ month in misc. insurance
$100 in personal care products.
Not to mention $70/day buys A LOT of food. Are they giants or eating only smoked fish?
Importantly, the estimated cost increases are driven by programs like free school meals, disability benefits, and K-12 enrollment that strengthen our communities.
Minnesotans understand we all do better when we all do better and that uptake in these programs is a good thing. 4/
@MarkGattozzi
@jdcmedlock
The real crux was the advantage granted to the East India Company over smugglers and legitimate non-EIC importers.
Might be a stretch to say they were protesting a tax cut, but they were absolutely protesting monopoly, multinational tax avoidance, and corporate subsidy.

I'm afraid it's worse than that. People don't seem to appreciate just how good this year's deals really are. Despite historic deals, people are still unmoved to kill for them. Contemporary media no longer generates the sort of discount mania necessary to result in loss of life.
Yes! Starting with a 90% top tax rate, which will discourage the bad behavior of becoming obscenely rich (also strongly associated with many other bad behaviors and general dickishness).
Did my favorite “what’s on the radio in rural PA?” experiment and was not disappointed. First thing I heard? “God calls on people to earn all different levels of income. The key is to be content with the money you have and not question the distribution of *God’s* resources” Eeesh
This is disappointing but even if he falls short,
@sorenmpls
and his staff ran an incredible, values-based campaign against long odds.
In ward 8 and across the city, voters sent a clear demand for stronger leadership towards a safer, kinder Minneapolis.
If Democrats think Americans earning under $400,000 can’t afford to pay any more in taxes, then how are they not announcing a state of total emergency over the hundreds of millions of Americans that live on less than 10% of that?
If you are tired of empty streets, vacant storefronts, and poor air quality then you should check out the amazing work Our Streets is doing promoting alternatives to I-94.
Twin Cities Boulevard is practical, not radical.
“Reimagining I-94: A Report on Reparative Highway Alternatives & Evaluation Metrics” addresses how removing I-94 would work, what it might look like, and what the community benefits would be.
If MN is the state boldly building a brighter future, then rethinking car-first design is an absolute must.

I get that the centrists are dropping out to consolidate support and block Bernie, but from a strategic standpoint, really seems like Biden is the worst possible choice.
No legs to stand on with the progressive wing and would get absolutely destroyed by Trump in the general.
Empty buildings like this are a blight across the city and it’s not for lack of interest — landlords are holding out for higher rents or more desirable tenants. They are depriving us of valuable services and vitality.
The city needs to pass aggressive vacancy penalties ASAP.
PREDICTION: The long vacant Rudolph's building at 1933 Lyndale will eventually find a tenant. But it won't be until 2 mos before street construction begins in 2027. The owner of this unlicensed seasonal fireworks store quickly becomes the spokesperson for stopping reconstruction.
@nharpermn
I didn't say a majority are thoughtless. Moreover, I don't understand how you go from "people need to drive to St. Paul" to "people's need to drive to St. Paul at maximum speed is more important than the city of St. Paul itself".
Best doors of the year so far for
@sorenmpls
. 23 supporters in 50 knocks and three different people *put on layers* to step outside and talk. Hands frozen like bricks, still can't feel my toes.
Goddamnit we're gonna win this thing.
The tragedy of large police salaries is that we absolutely need a highly skilled, compassionate, and well-compensated public safety workforce, but instead of building it we are paying hateful suburbanites to idle SUVs in the bike lane.
Couple snaps from today’s canvass for

A fucking machine for the people💪💪

Agree with this.
I was very touched by Gus Walz's display of emotions last night and I don't think people rushing to explain his behavior as 'neurodivergent' are being the allies they think they are.
Gus Walz’s reaction last night doesn’t need justification. It doesn’t matter if he’s neurodivergent.
Men can cry. Men can show emotion.
His reaction to his father’s speech was absolutely beautiful. 💙
I'm proud that my City Council is standing up for drivers and standing up to Big Tech.

I love Medlock but he, like many well-intentioned leftists, is not thinking this through.
Yes, eliminating the SALT cap lowers taxes on the rich. But it does so in favor of higher tax states pushing the envelope w/ better services & more progressive funding structures. 1/
Both House and Senate tax bills contain a provision called “worldwide combined reporting” which would effectively end corporate tax avoidance in Minnesota.
It’s a big deal and not as complicated as big business wants

to believe. Summary here:
Macro week in class just wrapped up beautifully when a student asked:
"
@rohangrey

To which the only answer is "Yes."
Good read:
If you aren’t watching House Republicans take a brave stand in defense of hidden fees on consumer purchases then you are missing historyin action. Inspiring stuff.
Republicans on hour 7 filibustering against a consumer protection bill to ban junk fees. Of course, people famously love junk fees, so this makes a ton of political sense.

False report. The full quote from Sydney Sweeney mentions taxing wealth and high incomes, but most of her comments center the need raise revenues in line with other OECD nations in order to accommodate spending on healthcare, childcare, and other priorities.
Sydney Sweeney reveals in an interview that she's a big proponent of taxing the rich.
"I think rich people who don't agree just don't want to grind, and would prefer to play life on easy mode."
She adds, "Skill issue tbh."

Really,
@PeteButtigieg
opposes public goods of any sort. What he’s proposing aren’t public goods in any meaningful sense, but are government-subsidized private goods designed exclusively for a low-income population he would have nothing to do with.
Here’s a former Fortune 10 tax advisor sharing support for closing international tax loopholes with worldwide reporting.
His clients *love* that tax authorities don’t think they can figure out how to tax sheltered profit. But they will if we tell them to.
House GOP moving to bring Social Security to the floor once again because they didn’t get a vote last time.
@RepAishaGomez
points out seniors are the fastest growing portion of Minnesota’s homeless population. None of those seniors would benefit from this $1.3 billion tax cut.
For anyone wondering, I am working on this bill because if you get drunk and riled up about something at
@BlackHartSTP
, you stick by the promises you made.
So, this conservative think-tank called the Institute for Family Studies has done a bunch of research into what's causing declining birth rates and it kind of seems like, despite themselves, they've come to the inevitable conclusion that it's capitalism that's killing us?
Police departments often represent a third or more of a city budget, while causing far more harm than they prevent. Imagine the crime prevention from equivalent spending on affordable housing or cash assistance. American cities need social workers, not soldiers.

's HHS bill includes a provision to end the sub-minimum wage for disabled workers in MN, but GOP just brought an amendment to take it out.
The average disabled worker makes $4.15/hr with no floor. An abominable policy we need to end once and for all.
Georgia could become the next state to end the subminimum wage for disabled people. It would be the first state where Republicans led such an initiative.
