These Black women hosts need to be paid overtime for this effort to educate Sharon Osborne on national television. This should not be their job.

This reminds me of when, in pre-cheating software days, I had a student submit an essay on the US judiciary, which he had downloaded from the internet and changed the author’s name to his own. That author was Alexander Hamilton.
@drphillips2001
Apparently I saved it for posterity. Here is “essay for Miss Angelo’s A-Level US Politics module on the Supreme Court” (2003), also known as Hamilton’s “Federalist 78” (1788).
@TheTalkCBS
, what are you going to do to compensate and support
@sherylunderwood
and
@ElaineWelteroth
for what you’ve put them through on national tv? It is not their job to educate another host about racism on live tv, especially in light of how that host reacted.

Starting salary for Lecturer A at my institution is about £39k pre-tax, £31k post-tax today.
So if a lecturer is hired from abroad and they bring a partner and two dependents, they will spend more than a year’s salary just to live in the country for five years.
If a British person brought their partner and two children to the UK under these revised fees (taking a 20% increase to the fees and revised IHS fees) a five year journey to indefinite leave to remain would cost over £33,000! Just in Home Office fees... completely ridiculous! 8/

Raise your hand if you’ve learned that you work at a uni that will not reveal how many COVID cases it has, and will only say that it is “low compared to other universities that have been the focus of media attention,” as though COVID cares about NSS scores. 🙋🏻♀️ 🙋🏻♀️ 🙋🏻♀️

It’s almost like you think her perspective and endorsement are valid, after thousands of your candidate’s supporters indicated the opposite for months.
Met with a student today who is researching the UK national history curriculum's emphasis on American civil rights history as a whitewashing of Black British histories and white British racism. The kids aren't just doing alright, they're kicking a***.

Not being able to save up to buy because you are paying 100% of the rent that someone else is splitting 50/50 with a partner. Lack of ability to take risks career wise because you don’t have the cushion of a partner’s income to fall back on.
Today marks two years since we lost my brother Shawn far too early at age 39. Here he is with his beloved son Giovanni, his mini-me, who lost his dad at just 10 months old.
My mom was working on her doctorate when she got pregnant with me. My parents divorced soon after and as a single mom, she never got to finish the degree. All her labors made it possible for me. She even drove 3 hours on the day of my defense to surprise me.

I just explained the Nakba to my mother. She said it changes what she thinks about the whole thing. There’s a reason why so many educated, politically aware people like her haven’t heard of it. The history of oppression is so clear.
There is a cottage industry of white Brits and Europeans “studying” U.S. anti-Black racism who IMHO could do much more to name, understand, and fight against it in their own respective countries.
Just saw an advert for a UK AHRC grant on modern slavery which requires the data collected in the grant project to be shared with the Home Office, and nope.

I’m still missing why it was her responsibility to consolidate with someone, when many supporters of that person expressed open hatred of her. She should have overlooked that because...?
To be clear, thanks to hard-won negotiations by
@sussexucu
, teaching staff have the right to opt for online teaching next term. But the idea that any f2f teaching is still going to happen at this point is just not okay.
Deeply dismayed to have been reminded today that I work at an institution that would rather protect bigotry (in the guise of academic freedom) than the well-being and protest rights of vulnerable students and staff. All solidarity with the Sussex trans and non-binary community.
My dear wonderful brother Shawn, my only sibling, passed away unexpectedly a month ago today at age 39. He left behind his partner, their eleven-month-old son, and four stepchildren. I miss him so much.
Between fences at Manchester, guard dogs at Leeds, and cops on campus at Sussex, UK unis are ratcheting up the surveillance of all students. It will disproportionately affect those who are targets of racist police violence &/or who live under Hostile Environment policies.
@ProfessaJay
I’m a former secondary school teacher turned PhD/prof and the number of days I think about what I do now as another version of that job with a fancier title.
Fellow tenured/permanent faculty:
Students have the right to protest. Fail to protect this, and we might as well kiss the whole idea of the university goodbye.

If anyone's looking for a way to get their heart rate up, I recommend this simple exercise: save a file of your book manuscript draft and somehow overwrite the entire 130,000+ words with a single letter.
Slightly annoyed by some U.S. folks claiming campus protests have 'spread' to Europe. I have total respect for what's happening on U.S. campuses but as a scholar of transnat'l social movements, I think it's impt to clarify that protests have been ongoing on UK & EU campuses.
It’s hard to explain to friends outside UK academia just how unkind our working conditions are to us & our research. Recently a UK colleague returned from a stint at a US institution surprised at how nicely she was treated & how her research was respected & given time.

So I'm not saying I'm a national lucky charm but I *did* become a British citizen today AND England football are now going to an international final for the first time since 1966.
Several ppl of a certain demographic have swooped in to defend that guy bc he’s “in pain.” This reminds us who can express emotion within academia & who’s expected to just keep going. If marginalized ppl stopped & expressed the pain this job causes the whole thing would collapse.
If you've ever stepped off an elevator wondering if it's possible for your phone to slip out of your hand and into the tiny gap of the elevator shaft and fall six stories or so, I'm here to tell you this too can happen.

“My ham-fisted attempt at provocation” should be the title of so many white men historians’ memoirs. Enough is enough. You don’t get to tell us What History Is And Isn’t any more.
Please read this apology from James H. Sweet regarding his recent

column. "I apologize for the damage I have caused to my fellow historians, the discipline, and the AHA. I hope to redeem myself in future conversations with you all."

dudes will tell us it doesn’t fit the technical definition so it can’t be true.
I'd prefer much more progress than where we are right now, but I accept that it hasn't worked out that way as yet. That part I get.
What I don't like, however, is this being sold to us as a massive victory when it's not. I really wish the inflated & unclear comms would stop.

I actually got asked the other day in G Drive if I want to opt in to an AI lab and said no. Are they doing it automatically as well?

My guess is that William & co gave Kate a chance to announce their split mutually but she is refusing so now they are just catapulting her under the bus.
Because the majority's judgment stunts that progress without any basis in law, history, logic, or justice, I dissent.

What seems to have been left out here: the fact that the BDM vote yesterday went the other way. This is really shocking and if true, a complete undermining of democratic structures.

A humble request: please be kind to people with books coming out this year or next. Some of us haven't been able to set foot in a library throughout the editing process, and we are having to rely on what is accessible online.

God give me the confidence of a white man on LinkedIn who doesn’t know you personally but sends you a sample of his work unprompted and calls it a holiday gift.
My employer has issued guidance today that says faculty do not “need to” wear masks when teaching because we can maintain 2 m distance from students in the tiny, poorly ventilated classrooms in which we teach. Y’all, I cannot.
Thought while editing my book manuscript: when are we going to start calling it white transnationalism instead of or in addition to white nationalism? Far-right politics transgress national borders and it’s to our collective benefit to engage with that scope.
@adribbleofink
I lost a diamond bracelet in Brooklyn. Someone picked it up and tied it to a fence in plain sight. Two days later it rained and the bracelet fell off the fence. Someone else tied it to another part of the fence, before a 3rd person saw my lost & found sign and returned it to me.
I don’t know that we will in our lifetimes come to terms with the sheer scale of death that has happened in the past year. How do we continue to live in light of this?
I got told yesterday that the kind of work I do is not what “historian historians” do. Tbh I’m proud of that and happy to hold that space for other folks in our discipline.
Please sign and share. The Goldsmiths MA in Black British history is one of the best things to happen to the practice of history in the UK in recent years.

Bus services will not be travelling onto campus from 25 November to 4 December, between 7.30am and 3.00pm daily. All services will instead stop at the A27 Falmer Station bus stop during these times.
A campus coach service is available for University members with a disability.
