I read an ethnography many years ago (Life on Easy Street) that explained how because wealthy people have no real or structural difficulties, they seek to inculcate values in their children through manufacturing petty struggles like this...

2) word counts matter a lot too, unfortunately. for CLR, we look for pieces between 15 and 30k. 30k for me is a hard limit, not necessarily for others, but the sweet spot is really around 25k (we anticipate adding several thousand words in the editing process, mostly BTL)

on the one hand yes there's obviously irony here and also... treating an institution as monolithic, not made of actors, is what leads to facile eyerolling. the librarians and archivists are not the fascists, many are supportive... roll your eyes, but do it in a reasoned way
Columbia is already archiving banners, artwork, and other materials from Hind Hall, even as the students who occupied the hall are still suspended and facing possible expulsion.

that's so shocking...someone who was invested in the cult of his own personality, founded on certain white-soothing pablum, did not have practices that actually served or supported people of color...i never would have guessed....
The mismanagement of this center was one of the worst kept secrets at BU, and not only did it hurt the cause of social justice and “anti racism” but also people who worked in a toxic environment or were fired unceremoniously (and not just now). A sad mess.

Directors said they'd restore it if students agreed to put a disclaimer on the essay.

I could write a book about how the culture rn is opposite the hipster culture of a generation ago, where only liking popular things and incuriosity are seen as virtues but knowing a lot/having eclectic tastes/becoming an expert are seen as pretentious and even immoral.

Okay so, yes! Dissents do not have force of law like majority opinions. But do people understand why lawyers care about dissents? It's not just outrage--dissents offer alternative legal reasoning, and furnish arguments that lawyers will make in challenging the court's decision.
The fawning over dissents is so embarrassing because it’s literally all y’all got. No guts, no plan, no protest, no action, no strategy. They out-planned, out-organized, out-couraged you for decades and no lesson has been learned.

Yesterday we were notified by our University president that starting fall 2024 that we will no longer be allowed to assign any resources (books etc) in any class in an effort to reduce cost burden on students.

International Court of Justice advisory opinion on Israel’s regime in the occupied Palestinian territory: colonisation, annexation, racial discrimination, denial of self determination. Israel’s presence is unlawful. Restitution, reparation, dismantlement of the settlements/wall.
