Ten years ago I established the first Veteran’s Treatment Court in Alabama. Since then it has been 100% successful, meaning every veteran has graduated, had their cases dismissed, and never returned to the criminal court system.

My state has a long and unfortunate history of violating the constitutional rights of our own fellow citizens. Alabama has never extended rights beyond the federal minimum, but continues to violate the minimum rights guaranteed by the Federal Government.
Three federal judges rule that a Congressional district map approved by the Alabama Legislature in July did not fix a likely Voting Rights Act violation and orders a cartographer and special master appointed by the court to draw a new map.

Last year, 325 people died in Alabama prisons, the Alabama Department of Corrections confirmed for Appleseed today, marking a new record high. That’s a 20% increase from the 270 deaths in 2022, a year that saw more deaths in the state’s prisons than ever before. (1/4)

And our "Condemned" report highlights men sentenced to die in prison for crimes w/ no physical injury & offers recommendations for fixing this wrong, including amending AL's laws so that judges have the opportunity to review some of these old sentences.
