Started paeds FY2 with no aspiration to be around children as a doctor. Told people I couldn’t think of anything worse. There’s now nothing else that has brought me as much joy as treating children. Now I really can’t wait for paeds surgery CST 🥺 what an absolute privilege.

Busiest week of my life starting FY1 on upper GI surgery at @UHNM_NHS but so much fun and so much knowledge gained already 🤯 The nurses/pharmacists are the absolute best. Made me a cup of tea/biscuits and hyped me up whilst I was running around like a headless chicken 🥹

I had a really great day assisting with an elective hernia list today. My consultant did so much excellent one-to-one teaching with me. We were discussing how previously House Officers (or SHOs) would run lumps/bumps lists or do digit amputations etc. I don’t know of anywhere 1/

@feleciadsouza The GP who was teaching us in my first year of med school said he could feel my kidney whilst I volunteered to be the patient for an abdominal exam. I have an ectopic kidney in my pelvis on the side he was 'balloting' 😭 I never told anyone because I didn't want to embarrass him

An absolute revelation this year has been to write reflections for ARCP using the dictate function on Microsoft Word. Feels so much more natural to reflect out loud and is so much quicker. Would highly recommend 🤙🏻

@HannahJavanmard @Xeon4f145d96s1 The SCPs sound great. However as an FY1/FY2 I would have loved to have been trained to do lumps/bumps lists as opposed to sitting on a ward doing TTOs. Early exposure to surgical skills/consenting/running theatre lists.

At 15 I had a bowel perf with sepsis, spent two weeks on a ventilator and lived with an ileostomy for 2 years. My surgeons to this day are my inspirations and made me want to be a surgeon myself. Still a med student but it’s definitely given me empathy beyond any training could.

@AbbieTBee This happens most days without fail. Yesterday an elderly patient I didn’t know tried to call me over to ask a question. They called me over with “Doctor!”. Their family member leaned over them to quiet them down with “Mum, mum, stop. That’s not a doctor, that’s a nurse.” 😂😭

@chloefisher1999 If you want to be a doctor, you can do it. Don’t ever think you can’t. I got told by nearly everyone (except my family) that I wouldn’t get in/not to bother. I’m by no means an expert/I don’t know your circumstances, but I’m happy to to give advice if you want any ☺️

@greenICUnurse I spent a long time on ICU which came with ICU-psychosis and delusions. I was never able to piece together in my mind what happened on ICU or the people I’d met. I really can’t begin to imagine how helpful this is for patients. Such an amazing idea and I so wish I’d had one!

@mjv__1 In paediatrics where I work, as an FY2 I get scheduled to outpatient clinics and lumbar puncture clinics. They also encourage us to tell them if we have a particular interest and will try to get us opportunities in it. E.g. a few days in PICU

@hayleymagill @MHA_92_ I worked hard to get my decile, spending nearly all my spare time studying. I had a job as a carer and I commuted an hour each way for 6 years. My incentive was that I didn’t want to have to move away. Other than deciles, I’m not sure how else it could work. 🤷‍♀️

This week is Crohns & colitis awareness week. It is something I never used to talk about. I love that the positive coverage of Crohn’s and colostomies this year has made me realise it’s okay to do so! My Crohn's gave me my beautiful scar, I like to think of it as my trophy 😏
