18 years ago to the day I joined Devon and Cornwall Constabulary. Yesterday I was humbled to be offered a permanent role as an Assistant Chief Constable. My mum, if she were still with us, would have smiled about that. God bless you mum, this one’s for you.
Do you know what...I am getting sick of this! 10 x assaults on officers overnight, including kicks, punches, head butts and of course the obligatory spitting (x3). Our staff face this day in day out, in order to keep our communities safe. How comfortable does that make you feel?
On behalf of all officers, staff and volunteers working for Devon and Cornwall Police I offer our most sincere condolences to the Royal Family. Rest in peace your Majesty.
Still a PC dog handler... how fantastic is that? You do a job that you love and one that you are great at. We all aim/aspire for that in our careers, regardless of rank or position. Tomorrow you will make more of a difference than I can ever hope to.
Spent time with our local helicopter team today. A national capability but delivering services locally. Privileged to witness them first hand locate a high risk misper sitting on the main line to London and guide ground units in to engage and safeguard. Team work at its best.
Spent the day in Plymouth meeting staff, officers and volunteers working across a range of functions. Great people doing great work. One particular highlight for me was to be able to go out on patrol with Sgt Steve Dykes. We worked together 20 odd years ago.
@dykesy1
Yesterday was truly humbling. My thanks to all the D&C officers deployed to London, and the larger group of officers, staff and volunteers who have worked on the wider policing operation over the last 12 days. You have served Her Majesty well and your Force is very proud of you.
Got a call from earlier from a good friend telling me he had just passed his Sergeant’s board. That news has put a smile on my face for the rest of the day. We have great people, doing a great job. Well done old chum...keep making a difference.
My pleasure to drop into Plymouth today to wish DC Al Dixon a very well deserved retirement after 31 years service. Finishes in less than two weeks and is as committed, enthusiastic and motivated today as he was on the day he joined. Our thanks to you Big Al.
Busy weekend for us so far. Morning tasking expertly chaired by
@InspMorley
. 51 people in custody, serious incidents running in Plymouth and Paignton, vulnerable female rescued from the sea yesterday in Torquay. Bravery, professionalism and teamwork personified. World class!
Spent yesterday evening with staff in Response and CID in Plymouth, and then in both of our Control Rooms, finishing off in Exeter. Just to witness their professionalism and commitment in the face of surging demand was truly magnificent. We are blessed to have such great staff.
Great finish to the week! Celebrating the passing out of 20 student officers, heading out to police stations across our two counties. As a force we continue to invest, recognising the need to maximise our visibility within local communities.

Had the chance today to say goodbye and thank you to my good friend Chief Inspector Mike Robison who retires soon after a career of public service in HM Forces and the Police. A great example of professionalism, dedication and a sense of humour along the way. All the best Mike.
My absolute pleasure to spend time with D/Supt Steve Brownlow before his retirement. I cannot think of a finer example of an authentic, values based leader and someone who has been a friend to me for over 20 years. Thank you for your service Steve.
Meet Insp Simeon Bayliss. Part of the winning police team in the Army Sprint Relay Champs. Qualified for the GB team at middle distance triathlon(for his age). I’m in awe just standing next to him. Well done Simeon. PS…in scruffs as I’m out on a plain clothes job next.
My thanks to all the staff of the various agencies that have come together over the last 36 hours to keep people safe in Exeter. A fantastic example of teamwork, problem solving and dedication. First class job everyone.
Morning tasking now finished. Teams working hard across D&C to follow up multiple incidents from last night, plus processing 84 detainees across 6 custody centres. Lots of pressure in the system, but we will cope as we always do. Very proud of D&C police right now

Popped in for late turn briefing at Charlie’s, Plymouth. Grew up as a response cop and as a detective in this place. It’s ugly, but I still love it to bits.
Visited our Control Room in Exeter earlier, then down to Plymouth to see colleagues in Custody, Patrol and Local Investigation. Finishing off later in our other Control Room at Crownhill. My thanks to all our officers, staff and volunteers working tonight to keep people safe.
@PoliceChiefs
What isn’t mentioned here of course are the 125,000 cameras in use across UK policing today, being used 1000s of times every day by hard working colleagues, raising standards, protecting officers and staff, and capturing vital evidence for the courts.
Great event at HQ this morning. 19 new special constables being sworn in. Amazing people giving up their time to help keep our communities safe. My thanks go to them and all our special officers.
Out with the Exeter Proactive Team this morning. 4 safeguarding visits completed, responded to a report of drug dealing, brief foot chase (yes…I ran too) and 1 in custody. That team sure know their business. Great work.

Spending a fantastic evening celebrating the bravery of D&C PC Al Lenton (ret’d) who is rightly recognised tonight for his actions to help a colleague in real danger. Great example of policing at its best.

Had the pleasure and privilege today to present the D&C ladies basketball team with medals they won at the national PSUK finals this year. Great credit to our force, great credit to their sport. Very well done ladies.
Chris...you guys are doing an amazing job, which for the most part goes unnoticed, day in, day out. I’d just like to stop and pause to put that right. Awesome is a word used too often, but not on your part. I am properly proud of you and your officers.
What a shift. Currently have 4 officers assaulted with one in hospital. There really are some challenging people around. Thankfully will all live to do it all again tomorrow. Is it time to go home yet?

and
@Matt_Longman_
for hosting me in Plymouth yesterday. Met brilliant staff from our Professional Development Units, Plymouth BCU, Incident Resolution Centre, Contact Centre and Control Room. I could not have been more impressed.
Spent a chunk of the weekend in A&E after our youngest got injured playing football. Thankfully he’s ok...just a little battered and bruised. Wanted to recognise and thank the staff that dealt with him. Care, skill and professionalism in bucket loads.

Late afternoon tasking now complete. Number of detainees across custody now down to 38. Investigations making good progress in relation to live jobs from last night. Unlicensed music event (rave) successfully closed down in Devon. Top team effort across the board.
Was my great pleasure Richard. You have a great team and I have enjoyed my time here. We look forward to working in partnership with you into the future.
Today I signed an MoU with
@DCCJimColwell
to cement a police relationship that will benefit both forces as we deliver policing to our respective communities.

Fantastic to spend some time on foot patrol in Newquay this afternoon with Liz and Paul, two of our very dedicated and well known PCSOs in the town. A very lively, but friendly and safe feel about Newquay this summer.

off and running. Great day today talking about the big ticket issues in policing, and the leadership requirements for the future. Rather humbling just to be a part of the conversation.
It was a great pleasure to open

today, a room brimming with talent, energy and optimism. Policing needs to be much better at continuous professional development at all levels and this is a great opportunity to set the bar.
Great to spend time with the High Sheriff of Devon, Mr Richard Youngman, yesterday. I also got to meet his designated police cadet, Adam Watts. A very impressive young man.
Great start to the week. Opening up the National Body Worn Video User Group. Whole host of police forces and other agencies present to discuss the current challenges and opportunities in relation to body worn video.
Great to spend time with our very own PSUK Shore Angling Team national champions today! Very well done to all those involved. I look forward to welcoming the trophy home again next year.
Final session of three today with a total of 96 newly promoted sergeants. Talking about their achievement, recognising the step they have taken, and discussing their role in delivering excellence in our communities.

In Cornwall today. Met local staff and the High Sheriff, Mr Andrew Williams, plus his two designated cadets, Lauren and Charlotte. Great discussion about how his office can support policing locally.

World Autism Awareness week this week. I have a nephew who is autistic. He is the most charming, funny, smart and impressive young man anyone could hope to meet and I am so very proud of him. Awareness and understanding is key, which is why this is so important.
World Autism Awareness Week takes place today 26 March - 2 April 2018. Did you know around 700,000 people in the UK are on the autism spectrum. Together with their families, this means autism is a part of daily life for 2.8 million people.
#AutismAwarenessWeek
Spent time with some of our firearms officers today as they train to deal with our worst nightmare. Constantly amazed by their willingness to step into harm’s way, in order to keep us all safe. Courage comes in a number of forms. With these teams, it is written right through them
@ACCColwell

Thanks Jo…great event to be involved in, even in such a small way. Great sense of community. If I get invited back next year I’ll definitely have a go (with no-one watching). Very well done to all involved.
Tragic news. Parents/carers please talk to your children/young people. Don’t take a risk with your life. A young life lost and a family left devastated. My thoughts and prayers go them.
Police are investigating the sudden death of a 15-year-old girl who was found unwell in

I won’t comment on the case, but I will comment on the sheer hard work, professionalism and dedication of all our teams deployed on this investigation. Much to do, but just to get to this point is truly great work.
My last week as chief officer and what a privilege & a mighty honour it has been. The most wonderful people in the 2 counties to serve alongside. We have achieved so
much together but the baton of leadership will pass to someone else with new and great ideas. Thank you!
Spending the day in Cornwall today. Meeting colleagues in Bodmin, Camborne and Newquay. Really good to be on the road and hearing about the delivery of our summer policing plans.
Gareth...success is defined in any number of ways. Promotion is just one of them. Dedication, professionalism and resilience can be defined/discerned at every rank or role. So no wasted service here buddy, none at all.
Steve…as per my short words earlier, it has been my pleasure to work alongside you over the years. Wishing you all the very best for your next adventure.
Today's my Iast day at
@DC_Police
after 30 years sevice. My thanks to the brilliant officers, staff and colleagues from other organisations I've worked with along the way. I have enjoyed being part of policing and making a positive difference - best of luck to all for the future
Festival of Remembrance was first class. May we never forget the sacrifices of those that went before us. My two boys live in a world shaped by their bravery and selflessness.
Fantastic day yesterday spent meeting staff, officers and volunteers at Camborne, Truro and Bodmin. Individuals and teams full of passion, professionalism and pride in what they do. Great job CIOS BCU.
@CornwallCmdr
Will be going all across Devon over the next few days. Keep an eye out for it in a town or village near you. D&C Police doing our bit to help ensure we all remember our brave fallen.
Please note, our advice is not to travel in the hours of darkness tonight. Roads are likely to be very icy and the Met office have issued a yellow weather warning between 9pm tonight and 7am tomorrow morning.
Great to be able to present the force cricket team with their caps today. They went on to win in style! Fantastic team spirit and a great example of work colleagues enjoying wellbeing time together.
Andy Berry is back as Chair of Devon and Cornwall Police Federation. He said that over the next three years he will continue to drive forward improvements for members, especially around welfare, fairness and workloads.
Just been briefed on the weather situation over the next 24-36 hours. Suggest if you are planning an evening out tonight, you may wish to head home a little earlier.
Devon & Cornwall Police wish our Chinese communities a very happy New Year celebration. In doing so we recognise the contribution such communities make to daily life across our two Counties. May the 16 days of celebration bring much joy and happiness to your families and friends.
I was privileged enough to be in Lincoln yesterday for this event. A very moving service, expertly put together and delivered. Thank you Lincolnshire for the warm welcome. A fitting venue for such an importance act of remembrance.

So come on folks...I’m reliably informed that at this rate both Mayhew and Davies will spend about 5 mins in a cell. Surely it is worth a donation to keep them both locked up longer?
Very happy to be involved in this event. As an ex-student of the College back in the early 90’s, it is my pleasure to pay a little back all these years later. Great learning, great memories.
@ACCJimColwell
is the guest speaker for this Saturday's talk on sport and public services during our virtual open day. Still need to sign up? You can do so here:
Spent time with community members this week, talking about the significance of today. Much more to be done, and we cannot/must not do it in isolation. By working together, and taking action, we can change our current reality.

Today we spare a special thought for Doreen Lawrence and family. 28 yrs ago today, her son, Stephen, was murdered in a racially motivated attack. We want to pay tribute to Stephen & remind ourselves why

From my perspective Ryan your first three months have been properly impressive. Yes, you have great staff, but they deserve and require great leadeship...which they have.
My first three months as a
@DC_Police
superintendent have been the most testing of my service - but also hugely rewarding. I will never forget the commitment and brilliance of the staff in my dept, working to keep the CJ system in D&C, and service to victims on track
