Independent city & parish councillor, Orton Waterville, Peterborough. Lifelong disability rights campaigner. Save Peterborough Dementia Resource Centre.
After 10 MONTHS I got a call today from a couple in Warmington who had found a ginger cat in their garden & found my appeal online. I just went there with Peterborough Cat Rescuece to scan his microchip. Incredibly IT IS LARRY GRAYSON. 😻
Our precious Panthers speedway team, heroes in our city and role models for many, many people. It is a disgrace that those responsible for developing Peterborough cannot see the true value that you bring to us.
@PboroPanthers
My hilarious husband presented an old passport at the polling station. The in the photo he is 22 (he's now 62). What a cad. He said it was his protest against the ridiculous new rules (and yes, he was still allowed to vote, so he's chuffed he can still pass for 22).
We must defend use of our public square for peaceful protest. When I heard the officer threat to issue those 16-year-olds with £80 fines I had to get involved & demanded to be fined too because they were doing NOTHING WRONG. I've never heard such nonsense.
#YouthStrike4Climate
Thank you
@Amelia_Womack
for mentioning that Peterborough Greens achieved our highest ever polling in the by election (in a field of 15 candidates, this is a bigger deal than many realise).

Huge congratulations to Green Party candidate Kirsty Knight ELECTED to join Julie Howell and Nicola Day in Peterborough's FIRST GREEN WARD of Orton Waterville. Thank you to our team esp. Sam Godley & to our wonderful residents. 💚💚💚
The results are in for Orton Waterville ward.
Kirsty Knight from The Green Party has been elected.

When my head stops spinning, and my ears stop ringing, I'll say something. But look at the number of votes. Not just the highest in the ward (68% of the vote in Orton Waterville), the highest in the entire city. I'm floored.
1/2 I just intervened when Kingdom tried to stop young people from protesting about climate change. He threatened to ticket them. I told him he'd have to ticket me too.
@peterboroughtel
Peterborough has its first ever Green city councillor. Thank you to everyone who has put me in this position of privilege. While there's breath in me I will stand with my community of Orton Waterville ward. 💚

Hi Mike, have you made contact with Lost Peterborough Pets on Facebook? I'd say this is the most effective network for finding errant cats. Hope he turns up soon like nothing happened.
My friend & fellow

Thank you,
@LandmarkTrust
, for giving me a much-needed break in the mid-18th Century, with no phones, no TVs, no emails, no social media, no news and, most valuable of all, no people.
How can a city centre like Peterborough's have no accessible public toilets? Can't we even get the very basics right? Apparently not. No toilets, no fountains, no hydrotherapy pool. Has someone in charge got an aversion to water?
I stood for council because after doing so once as no more than a favour to the local party local people implored me to properly go for it. So I did & they rewarded me with 50% vote share. None of this was my plan but it is an honour & my pleasure now to devote my life to it. 💚
I've never watched a single episode of Strictly, but this may have to change. I was at school with Matt Goss and will be rooting for him! Do we have any Brosettes in Peterborough? 😄
3/3 Nicola's 64% election result is all the strength & encouragement she & I both need to take this task on the way it should be taken on. So goodbye to what was & hello to the hardest working team Orton residents will ever know. 💚
Apologies to any neighbours I just woke by shouting with joy (I've had a lot of Irn Bru by this point).
@andrewpakes_
wins Peterborough for Labour and I could not be more pleased. Congratulations, Andrew.
Just been shown a screenshot of an online conversation with residents in which a Conservative Peterborough Councillor refers to me using the sick emoji 🤢 rather than my name. I'm not ashamed of being Green or of having MS, but I'm embarrassed by this behaviour. I'm 47. Grow up.
Excellent work from the
@peterboroughtel
. I choose Peterborough as my home as do many. I hope no one was silly enough to take the reports in the tabloids seriously. We know what we're about but perhaps our mistake has been keeping the good stuff secret. 💚

SAVE OUR SPEEDWAY On Wednesday, Orton Waterville Parish Council will debate whether to apply to the council to make the Peterborough speedway track an Asset of Community Value, therefore protecting it from demolition. ❤️🖤❤️🖤
@PboroPanthers
In 2018, there were no Greens on Peterborough City Council. Over the course of three elections we have turned Orton Waterville ward from an entirely blue ward to an entirely Green ward. We're very grateful to the residents & volunteers who made it happen.
One of the best things about

Please come to the city centre on Saturday 18th November from noon to support our Speedway club who are in desperate need of a home or the sport in Peterborough will die. Wear red and black if you can!
FERRY MEADOWS. I'm begging you, if you can't get there by foot or bike DO NOT COME TO FERRY MEADOWS THIS WEEKEND. Due to chaos caused by the behaviour of visitors today the car parks are CLOSED until further notice. I stand with
@NeneParkPboro
in taking this action. Stay safe.
Thank you to my incredible community of Orton Southgate. After a gruelling 3-hours we persuaded the council planning committee to REFUSE (7 votes to 3) the council's recommendation to approve AEPG/DHL's part-retrospective planning application. You are all my heroes.
A big moment for our team. The key to a Green Party meeting room in the town hall. 3.5 years we worked and waited and the day has arrived. It's a small but proud moment for us. Thanks to everyone who has helped us get to this point. No more corridor meetings.
The press is giving our new MP a grilling over his age and narrow win but missing the point. His BIG challenge will be as a Cambridge politician representing our community in Peterborough. A very different world. He'll need our support in that transition.
It feels like a growing number of people are concerned about protecting people like me, who shielded for almost a year and whose world will not grow any bigger or get any better from Monday. Hundreds of thousands of us will not be free on July 19. Thank you for continuing to😷.
9 months ago I asked
@NicolaDay78
to undertake a huge task: to attempt to become the second Green councillor in Peterborough. She did everything I asked of her & her landslide victory last night was thoroughly deserved. Sheer hard work & commitment wins the day. 💚
And so nice to see so many of you today, especially those who are not speedway regulars but who wanted to support this important cause. I'm a known softie who cries at anything, but the sight of so many people at our humble rally brought a tear to my eye. ❤️🖤❤️
Huge amount of media interest, which was amazing. Don't underestimate your own power,
@PboroPanthers
supporters. Your greatest asset is you. Stick by each other, stay positive, don't give up.
I'm sorry for the silence. I feel like I'm buried under a mountain of love. I spent yesterday at
@greenbackyard
with my team and then at some Orton Waterville residents' homes, thanking them for getting me elected. Big, big emotions. Never had so many hugs in my life. 💚
Save Peterborough Speedway. As part of the ongoing campaign to save the sport of speedway in Peterborough, I have tabled a motion that will be debated at the next meeting of the full council on Wednesday 6th December at 6pm.
@MikScarlet
I often feel that medical people see our condition and not our lives. I tell them what I do and my need to be lucid and this is often met with disbelief. We are highly capable people who need enabling treatments and medications. Giving up or giving in just isn't an option.
I hear no change of rhetoric from AEPG. Panthers have asked them how much money is needed so we can look for options to raise that money. Say what you like about me, but I was elected to represent our residents and their interests and that is what I will continue to do.
Vaccinated at The Fleet in Fletton. I started crying in there. I've been inside for so long and feel so relieved to finally have my jab. Embarrassing. Jab was painless.
As the sun sets on the last day of my 40s, I'm in reflective mood. When I was diagnosed with MS aged 20, I didn't imagine reaching 50. But I'm here, still quite well, and very grateful. I have a feeling I'm not done yet. There's space on this platform if you want to join me. 💚
2/2 The officer said their protest wasn't peaceful & could be deemed offensive. I told him silencing young people's right to protest to protect the planet was more offensive.
@peterboroughtel
I will continue to

in shops, in people's homes and inside venues at this time, to protect me and to protect you. If it is now to be nothing more than a personal choice, this is my choice.
The wearing of face masks will no longer be mandatory starting in schools from tomorrow
"We will trust the judgement of the British people" says PM Boris Johnson
This is what happens when councillors who have no understanding of the needs of disabled and older people are put in charge of decisions about the public realm. They're not resistant to change they're resistant to being injured by cyclists they don't see.
About to make that strangest of all journeys. I'm talking about the walk to the polling station when you're the candidate. There is nothing like it for us non-celebrity types. It feels weird. The whole day feels weird. Weird in a good way, but weird all the same. 💚
Super happy to have been asked to form a Green Group on the council with
@NicolaDay78
. I'm the Green Group Leader, Nicola is the Green Group Deputy Leader. We're still a bit shell-shocked. Thank you Waterville residents for putting us in such a privileged position (& so fast!).
We won a seat!!!!! Well done
@catherinerowett
and everyone who made yet more Green history in our region. I don't doubt Peterborough voters played our part. 💚💚💚
We built what we have achieved here from zero, in what was believed to be a 'very safe' Conservative ward. Hard work, visibility, accessibility and communication is no less than all residents deserve, and if you give them what they deserve they will support you. It's that simple.
Proud to support
@XRPeterborough
(Extinction Rebellion Peterborough) who staged a 'die in' outside the town hall today to raise awareness of the climate emergency. Peterborough City Council will debate a motion to declare a climate emergency for the city on 24th July.

I had a very positive experience at the Breast Clinic at
@PboroCityHosp
today. If you are called for screening do take up your appointment. Very quick and easy and friendly, caring staff.
My lovely team is out delivering a thank you card to everyone in the ward to thank them all for voting for me & promising those who didn't that I'm here for them too. Many residents are telling me they've never been thanked by a councillor before. Get used to it. 💚
I'm overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support today. Please remember to vote today. You can do it any time up until 10pm.

Tonight,
@NicolaDay78
moves the first ever Green Party motion at a (virtual) meeting of Peterborough's Full Council. The motion asks the council to resolve to create a food strategy for the city so everyone has access to good, affordable food, locally produced. (Old pic)
Please don't vote for a party that intends to cause great harm to disabled people for simply existing. The fear this will bring to people already experiencing severe anxiety will push some people to the brink. It's cruel and there is no justification.
Got my test results and potential diagnosis. Big relief. Today is the start of getting better and no more trips to A&E (I hope!). Thankful for our NHS. Treat me gently, please & I'll be able to keep going. Thanks As always to
@NicolaDay78
& our team. 💚
While I was at
@pborocathedral
this afternoon I lit a candle for a friend who is experiencing bereavement. The Cathedral is an invaluable community space for quiet contemplation and somewhere to sit with your emotions if you wish to. It is a place of healing for our city.
We're fighting very hard in

to get our first Green city councillor elected. If you can spare anything at all to help us we'd be so grateful. Thank you.

Hang on a minute. I was there yesterday. Are you telling me I was in the same building as Johnny Depp and didn’t see him? I will never get over this. Never. 😩😩😩
You may have witnessed ugly scenes in the council chamber this evening, and what I felt were the courageous and justified actions of Cllr Qayyum
@docshab
. The way Cllr Qayyum was spoken about by the other councillor was, in my mind, sexist and unacceptable.
Thank you
@peterboroughtel
for covering this. Kingdom (the council's outsourced enforcement officers) should not be permitted to threaten and frighten children on a peaceful and respectful protest on ANY issue. They. Were. Doing. Nothing. Wrong.
#Democracy
I'm thrilled to announce that the Green Party candidate in the Orton Longueville by election on 2 Aug is Alex Airey. Alex made huge sacrifices to help me to victory in Orton Waterville in May. I know he'll be an incredible local councillor for Longueville
Thank you for the strong response to my posts about the inaccessibility to disabled people of Peterborough city centre. The
@peterboroughtel
is strongly supporting us. There will be a number of articles in the paper soon. This matters, you matter and we won't let the matter go.
Feeling proud. More than 20 residents joined me on a litter pick of Orton Northgate
#Peterborough
today. They cleared TWENTY-SIX bags of rubbish, some of it from a stream. Really strong community effort and I'm humbled to be part of it. 💚
Following our AGM, I've been re-elected as Green Group Leader and
@NicolaDay78
has been re-elected Deputy Green Group Leader on Peterborough City Council for the 21/22 municipal year.
If you toy with residents' emotions by making them think a theatre is going to be closed and then 'saving' it, voting to increase cllrs' allowances, etc. don't be surprised if they get annoyed when you appear to be spending their money frivolously. 🤷♀️
@MikScarlet
So true. The legislation is also stacked against chronically ill people as the last thing you need if you have been discriminated against are are unwell is to fight a corporation and their legal team in court, but the law puts the onus on you to do that.
My dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer on Xmas Eve 2009 and died 50 days later. It's taken me a long time to recover from the trauma and I'm really feeling it this year. Thinking of all for whom this time of year is forever linked with loss and Xmas is a painful milestone. ❤️
I called a public meeting last week. 650 residents turned up to it to talk about an issue that affects their community & so I as their city councillor could listen to them. As we move into Democracy Week *THIS* is proper community engagement. I'm very proud to be a part of it. 💚
Rumour has it former Green Party leader Natalie Bennett
@natalieben
will be visiting Peterborough tomorrow afternoon to support Joseph Wells' bid to become MP for Peterborough. 💚
Our volunteers are out doing one last push over Orton Waterville ward this weekend, giving up precious family time to help with my campaign to be re-elected. I can't thank them enough.
I and others (notably Karen Oldale, Joel Lamy, Julie Fernandez and Cllr John Fox) have been campaigning for years for accessible toilets in Peterborough city centre. Now they will be built, in the Cathedral and in Queensgate. These will make a huge difference to many people. ❤️❤️
"I don’t think it’s too dramatic to say that these toilets could be the saviour of both Queensgate and Peterborough City Centre"
New accessible toilet facilities to be installed at Queensgate
We've eloped. Sorry we didn't invite you. We didn't invite anyone. Just the registrar & strangers for witnesses. The big day is tomorrow. See you later. ❤
I spent time this afternoon with new Green Fenland district councillor Simon Wilkes. Did you know that Simon has been BLIND from birth? I've spent much of my life championing disabled people's rights. So delighted
