It’s been the strangest of days. My partner got called up to cover a late (2-7.30) NHS shift ( he’s a health care assistant) ahead of three 12 hour day shifts. He went in. He is extraordinary. Caring kind compassionate. Tonight I asked him a question. We get married at Christmas
One never to be repeated tweet. I’m 71 in April, have a wonderful fulfilling and enriching job. And I’m getting married in the morning. To the man who has added meaning, richness, fun and above all love to my life. I am truly blessed. Signing off - for now
'Oh it's even worse than I thought!'

Developers want 21 acres of Wenny Meadow, Chatteris, - ‘predominantly open pasture/meadow’ -for 93 houses. It is before
@fenlandcouncil
next week. 555 neighbours consulted, 551 objected. Little affordable (10 pc max). Officers
@fenlandcouncil
recommend it for approval. Why? Why?
BREAKING:
@CambridgeMagpie
has won it. He is the newly elected Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. It is difficult to underestimate his achievement
Does anyone else share my opinion that in just a few days our country is - miraculously- back in the hands of grown ups? And what a better place it feels
GALLERY: Sir Ed Davey "We want to reform our political system – we think it is broken. Conservatives have corrupted British politics which is why Lib Dems are the champions of political reform and the ones people can trust.”

A lovely story. Last night a couple were enjoying dinner at an Indian restaurant. Until 22 boisterous footballers turned up they were the only customers. The couple didn't mind - too much - finished meal and went to pay. Only to find 22 Ramsey Town players had already paid it
I took one phone call today. Midway through our wedding lunch my uncle Philip phoned to congratulate my partner Michael and I. Uncle Philip is 86. He’s a truly lovely man and I was a page boy at his wedding 62 years ago in Hunstanton. I’m off to bed feeling blessed. And v happy
My partner works 12 hour shifts on a hospital ward. He never complains. He is always on time. Only v v rarely calls in sick. And wears a mask for the entirety of that 12 hour shift. So why can the prime minister of our country simply rip up the rule book? It’s grotesque and wrong
The changes about to happen in Cambridgeshire will be immense.
@CambridgeMagpie
has a clear manifesto of what his intentions are - and with a new structure
@CambsCC
the political landscape in Cambridgeshire is about to change. It is simply an astonishing achievement.
He could be any one of thousands. He’s actually a firefighter
@cambsfrs
but this simple image is a powerful evocation of everything we know to be true of this country’s fire fighters. Thank you - and everyone of your colleagues- for keeping us safe. Not just today but every day
We kept it quiet but this week
@CambsNewsOnline
is now recognised by
@google
as a leading provider of Cambridgeshire news. It means all our content is much much more easily searchable - and our figures already reflect this massive breakthrough. Its a great Christmas present
I have been overwhelmed by support – and yes, genuine and sincere love from people I don’t even know, but am strengthened by their messages.
Thank you.
And here’s why after 18 years of commuting into March each day for work I never ever tire of the journey. Beautiful wondrous Fenland. A few seconds of what I see and feel is pure magic
A family member of one of our small news team has been critically ill with COVID. Today he got a corridor clap from nurses as he left ICU to go onto a normal ward. He then ate a roast dinner. And I’ve welled up. Thank you my
@NHSuk
Thank you
How it began (left) and how it's going. The long campaign by
@cambstimes
(it began 8 years ago) to get Rikki Neave case re-opened. Today (as you can see with the photo on the right) Ruth and her husband Gary welcome the outcome of Old Bailey trial. I am overwhelmed with relief
So when has it become ‘the norm’ for security guards outside MBR Acres at Wyton to get this close to
#campbeagle
lawful protestors? One of a number of photos sent to me overnight that I’ll be looking at in more detail later
My amazing, talented and brilliant friend and former colleague
@KathSansom
absolutely nailing it. I've seen her cry, seen her laugh, seen her angry, seen her doubled up in excruciating pain and today I've seen her vindicated. You, Ms Sansom, are truly something special
"I've heard Matt Hancock give an interview this morning, that's not good enough."
Kath Sansom has called on the Health Secretary to deliver an apology in the Commons to all victims of pelvic mesh implants, sodium valproate and Primodos.

What sort of employer - to whom you have given 20 years of your working career including long days, evenings and multiple weekends without pay - sends your P45 in the post without even a bloody thank you? Happily they didn’t include a ‘with compliments’ slip lol. But really!!!!
Irrespective of who you are or who you voted for to become Mayor of Cambridgeshire, the Facebook page of
@CambridgeMagpie
is a joyous place to spend time. 700 likes, 300 comments and about as much love and support for a politician I’ve seen in a long time. Cambridgeshire expects!
We held off invites until every formality was complete. Final piece of jigsaw sorted. Michael and I delighted 1.30pm on February 18th 2022 will begin next stage of our adventure. And I had always assumed my only trip to register office would be as entry on death certificate lol
In other news: confirmation today of wedding date. Booked. Later than I had hoped ( no one told me there was a backlog lol). But it is February 18. And a tweet I never ever in my wildest dreams expected or believed I’d make. Michael is pleased too - he’s home and read email.
One of the most callous, obscene, gut wrenching acts of any government in my lifetime has been stopped in its tracks. It may be temporary - who knows. But I know I won’t be alone in sleeping a little easier tonight.
#RwandaDeportation
On arrival we asked the barman at this Lincolnshire pub for WiFi password. He replied 'buy a drink first' which we thought a little rude. Until we found - quite quickly - that 'buy a drink first' IS the WiFi password
THE result of the night for me is the spectacular result in Ely and East Cambs where
@CharlotteCane8
is now MP, removing
@lucyfrazermp
Charlotte has been an amazing local councillor and will be a fantastic MP. Voters have chosen wisely
No pain no gain is the considered response from my friend
@NikJohnsonCA
after he prepares to head home from hospital following major heart surgery. You remain in many people’s thoughts Nik as they look forward to seeing you back in the new year at the helm of
@CambsPboroCA
The truth is
@NikJohnsonCA
is a good man. A very good man. Principled, committed and trustworthy. Others – from all and occasionally from no – political parties merit a similar accolade.
But if places like Fenland are to move forward we need more – many more – like him.
You’ve always slept so beautifully and comfortably on our bed Monty. You were a wonderful companion and friend to Michael long long before I knew him. Today though dear friend we had to say goodbye. You had a heart of gold. We loved you very very much. Sleep well
A thought for parents: if your child says that when they grow up and want to be a care worker, a binman, a shop worker, nurse, bus driver or delivery driver, give them a hug and say ‘thank you, we’re proud of you.’
I hope we're as proud of these workers tomorrow as we are today.
The mother of the paperboy who’s bike was stolen 10 days ago tells me
@CambsCops
refuses to collect CCTV footage showing the theft ( and thief) because ‘there’s a pandemic on’. In good news her son collects a new bike on Saturday paid for by a public fund raising campaign
Ringing in my ears is a former, and very good friend, who once screamed at me: ‘I’m going to tell your workmates and your bosses all about you.’
Well stuff you. Stuff your threats. Get a life.
Today is a good good day. The rest of my life too, I hope.
Whatever the outcome of mayoralty election in Cambridgeshire, it has been an extraordinary 48 hours. On paper and based on national trends
@Conservatives
ought to have swept away all before it. That they have not suggests Cambridgeshire voters have been zealous in making a choice
An amazingly good experience checking into
@CambsCC
Register Office in March to complete paperwork ahead of February wedding. Off on holiday knowing all forms completed is a great feeling. Kind and helpful staff at March made us very welcome. Thank you all
Not often I get fussed over. Not often do my bosses always appreciate and recognise some of the work I do. But this was nice, and hugely appreciated. Our parent company runs a 'thank you' scheme and today my boss thanked me. I'm actually quite delighted
MY DAY: Totally absolutely made by a 20 minute call from recently widowed great granddad of 90 from East Cambs. He called - with some emotion in his voice- to congratulate my partner Michael and I on our engagement. The world has some lovely people. This one is from Isleham
I have no expectation whatsoever of my MP
@SteveBarclay
offering readers of my three papers ( most of them his constituents) an explanation or even an apology for the actions of his boss - and our prime minister - over
#partygate
. Please prove me wrong Steve
Pledge by new leadership
@CambsCC
'We believe the council must act openly and transparently in order to maintain the confidence of the public. We will therefore work with officers to publish the long-awaited
#farmgate
report to the greatest possible extent as soon as possible'
Hugely important day for Wisbech today as
@CambsPboroCA
signed off the final business plan to re-open the Wisbech to March rail line. I watched the moment live - now going through the detail. Make no mistake this was a historic moment. A frisson of excitement running through me
Why is it - with
#farmgate
#partygate
- some yawn and keep telling you to 'move on'. Publication of Sue Gray report and today of
#farmgate
report show why it is essential to pursue these matters relentlessly. It's called holding power to account - and the press need to do it more
Father’s Day ended for me with a phone call on a Saturday 34 years ago to say Dad had been killed by a drink driver on the A47 near King’s Lynn. I forgave the killer many years since - I honestly hope if he became a dad he knows how important it is to be a good one. And sober one
That journo bloke
@JayMitchinson
- how dare this preposterous man speak truth unto power. What has the fact he’s 100 pc right to do with it? Pesky journalists- again- poking their noses into truth, decency and honesty. Off to the tower!
The hatred being spewed on social media against those who have sought asylum and housed in a Wisbech hotel is shocking beyond belief. The reality is they could do with compassion, understanding and help. Christian leadership needed asap since all political leadership is hostile
Two thirds of the committee chairs and vice chair posts go to women. Now that, it can be argued, is the real levelling up lesson to be learnt from 2021
@CambsCC
elections
‘You don’t have to be gay to say no to gay hate’ says
@WisbechCouncil
Cllr Sidney Imafidon who has put

flag in his garden. ‘What do you think?’ Sidney asks me. The flag was gifted to him. Sidney you’re a ray of inspirational hope. Have a great weekend my friend
The oddest thing at
@PeterbPrideUK
was the ‘preacher’ with a microphone. As I passed he yelled that unless I changed my ways he’d send Al Qaeda to kill me. Listen mate I spent best part of my life before fully coming out. Not about to go back indoors anytime soon.
Just a reminder of the moment I coined the phrase
#farmgate
and the beginning of a long journey for scrutiny and a reminded of why local journalism remains vital in holding power to account. And it was this tiny but beautiful
@elystandard
of which I am proud to edit that began it
Two
@TheCampBeagle
protesters speaking outside High Court. Their future actions now curtailed by law but it’s unlikely to stop mounting and widespread protests over what happens inside MBR Acres at Wyton, Cambridgeshire
I categorically refuse to 'like' this tweet. How can anyone 'like' the idea of losing this dogged, talented and scrupulously impartial local democracy reporter. Ben has provided constant, detailed scrutiny of
@CambsCC
@CambsPboroCA
. A pleasure to have published your work.
A bit of personal news
I'll be leaving my role as local democracy reporter in Cambridgeshire in a couple of weeks to take up an exciting opportunity in London. Very much enjoyed the last two years and very grateful to my colleagues and everyone who has contributed to my stories
To those I've loved, annoyed, upset, challenged, irritated, consoled, and engaged with on
@Twitter
or in person in 2022, thank you and God bless. For the first time I have a husband to enjoy New Year's Eve with - and that is rather special. Happy New Year. And thank you all
One day I would like to meet whoever headed operation Nightingale to open London’s newest hospital. Simply to say thank you. It will save lives. It offers a little hope. But above all it’s simply one of the most extraordinary feats of my lifetime. Bowled over.
Can someone please explain how
@lucyfrazermp
helped 'deliver' Ely pass? She became Ely MP a year after planning permission was obtained by
@CambsCC
who had commissioned the by pass.
In case you haven't noticed
@CambsNewsOnline
is a year old TODAY. Blimey, what a year. Its been an exhilarating, occasionally emotional, rarely stressful, rollercoaster. Some amazing people have helped and to them heartfelt thanks. Thankyou
#Newsquest
for making it happen
A final tweet for today. On
#farmgate
Thanks to prodigious efforts - not just my work- substantial new evidence is emerging that reveals
@CambsCC
has shielded us from events of past 4 years that challenge the loose and inadequate narrative in the public domain. It is not over
So here in my home town of Whittlesey, the town council decides to allow its Facebook page to host an interview by
@SteveBarclay
of a
@Conservatives
candidate in a local by election. Strewth the bloody arrogance of it. Doesn't anyone understand electoral law any more?
APOLOGY: On behalf of readers of my Tweets I would like to apologise for one earlier which suggested
@CambsCC
was about to release a redacted
#farmgate
report. I misled led you. The 7-page 'document' released is drivel, whitewash, squit (I was born in Norfolk) and a cover up
School governor Cllr Alan Sharp and a Conservative member
@EastCambs
will probably remember to mute his Zoom button in future. Not a good idea to call a colleague ‘thick’ during a live stream - and one might think bad form not to apologize ASAP
Thankyou dear followers but can you please now stop sending me this from the new issue
@PrivateEyeNews
(I buy my own copy anyway lol)
PS: Available at all good newsagents for £2.50
Instructions included ‘rotation of avocados between the fruit bowl and the fridge’

I've seen a lot of Parliamentary candidates over the past 50 years - I had never heard of Peter P until I saw this but without a shadow of doubt he is on my all time favourite top 10. What a wonderful man and candidate. Good luck
@PeterPrinsley
I'm Peter and I'm your Labour candidate for Bury St Edmunds & Stowmarket. If you put your trust in
@UKLabour
we will deliver a brighter future for Suffolk.
None of the below. Pride for many is simply a celebration of coming from where we were to where we are. And given the intolerance, injustice, discrimination and homophobia I’ve seen - and experienced - in my lifetime, there’s plenty of cause to celebrate. Back off!
In Britain, homosexual people now have equal rights politically, socially and in every aspect of life. So why the need for ‘Pride’ marches? Triumphalism? Gloating? Rubbing ‘straight’ peoples noses in it?
Out to lunch near Wisbech today and I posed a question about perceived benefits of Brexit. A deathly hush until a fellow guest launched into ‘taking our jobs’ spiel which given the acute shortages in our public services and the same guest’s criticism of NHS rendered me speechless
Took a call earlier from
@NikJohnsonCA
who sounded far from downbeat at the pressures he’s facing. He is certainly determined to clear himself of accusations being thrown at him. Has he the mettle to bring it all round? His demeanour suggests he has both the will and the facts
Latest crock of s**t from my MP
@SteveBarclay
says a new Tory government will block a £450m waste incinerator in Wisbech that the old Tory government rushed to approve only a few months ago. He knows full well the law and the time to block it has gone. Pass the sick bag
We do of course have our own incident of COVID breaches last Christmas. The Angel at Wisbech had a small gathering of
@Conservatives
councillors. An eagerly anticipated FOI from
@FenlandCouncil
due Thursday will enable me to add further to what I’ve revealed. Stay tuned
As a journalist I don’t ‘do’ angry - it’s a recipe for blurred vision. But there are exceptions and meeting a young farmer in Cambridge today rejected by
@CambsCC
in favour of its deputy leader for a farm tenancy has made me not only angry but bloody furious
#farmgate
story soon
A friend walking home today was subjected to homophobic abuse and decided enough was enough. Thank you
@CambsCops
@PCCCambs
for swift response and delivering on promise to stamp it out.
You know when you’re doing your job as a journalist well when….one councillor tells colleagues he’s glad he’s never met you. And a second comes off
@Twitter
remarking ‘it spares me
@johnelworthy
tweets’ .
#spoilsports
Goodness me. What amazing displays in Wisbech. The town comes under scrutiny for many negative reasons but my friend 'Wisbech Tweet' has posted these and numerous others showing off its floral splendour. Breathtaking and brilliant- and volunteers have created it. Awesome
February 12th 2022. A day now never to be forgotten. My last meeting - but not conversation - with
@MikeRouse3
who died last night. Mike was a giant of a man. Principled, fair, knowledgeable and one of the kindest men I’ve ever known.
Journalism locally carries a heavier duty of responsibility in some ways to the national press. We work our communities daily. We live here. We are scrutinised. And we strive to tell the truth. That can be unpalatable for some. But truth matters. Above all else. And we carry on
It is extraordinary that Ukraine successes in tackling Russian invaders has hardly attracted a speck of interest from any British media. Search ‘Ukraine’ on
@Twitter
however and you’ll see the truly astounding achievement and the ensuing crisis in Russia itself.
There is a person - in Cambridgeshire - who was a key whistleblower in
#farmgate
. That person broke ranks to advise me of bullying, resultant tears, and escalation of the tantrums and hostility towards their department by Roger Hickford. It helped break open
#farmgate
Thank you
PS: to the interview last week in
#Whittlesey
with
@SSMoir
and now online
@CambsNewsOnline
and a personal observation. I think
@CambsCC
has made a great choice. Rarely do you get that sense of the right person in the right job and at the right time. I do believe we have just that
This is the first year - in 20 years of working in Cambridgeshire - that I have actually lived within its borders. Which means I can cast my very first vote for
@CambsCC
and for
@CambsPboroCA
and
@PCCCambs
It is a thrilling moment - I hope it is for you too. Enjoy the day.
A very exciting and important day tomorrow for my treasured colleague
@KathSansom
whose
@MeshCampaign
will dominate the headlines. The news is embargoed until midnight but catch
@cambstimes
at midnight plus 1 to share the news. It is a highly significant development
This splendid chamber on the left is what
@cambscc
forsook to end up in the monstrosity pictured right which is the seat of local government for Cambridgeshire. £18m spent and the chamber not fit for purpose - on their own admission!!! Our readers will bow their heads in despair
