Did you know that as a worker in New York State, you have a right to time off for voting on Election Day?
Do your best to Vote Early, but if you must vote on Nov. 3, check out
@NYSBOE
's guidelines on time off for voting:
Facial recognition + biometric identifiers often misidentify people of color, women + non-binary people, and can be used by landlords to harass + evict tenants. I rallied today ahead of my bill’s hearing to limit use of biometrics in residential settings.
#banthescan
It is unacceptable that Riis Houses residents still without safe water to drink or cook. Today I was out w/ the tenant association &
@MarkLevineNYC
to talk to residents and hand out meals.
Thank you to
@Food_1st
for being there to deliver 500 fresh meals for impacted residents.
Grateful that the Mayor signed my bills into law to give all New Yorkers access to abortion pills at no cost and to fight back against predatory fake clinics.
Without reproductive freedom, we cannot know reproductive justice—and in New York, we will continue to lead the way.
On the subway these days, it’s not unusual to see only Black, Latinx and Asian New Yorkers. I’ve never seen fewer white people on the subway in my life.
According to
@THECITYNY
, over 61,000 rent-stabilized units are sitting vacant in midst of perpetual housing crisis where shelter census is at record numbers. Join us Thursday to call for landlord accountability and an end to warehousing!
@PiSanchezNYC
@galeabrewer
@NyWarehousing
Composting is a proven method to decrease waste, combat climate change, and to be part of a comprehensive solution to the city-wide rat problem.
I sent a letter to
@NYCSanitation
asking to expand Curbside Composting Program city wide.
You already know every day is
#WorldBicycleDay
over here. 😎🚲
Every NYer—from cyclists to pedestrians—should feel safe on our streets. That's why I'm fighting to pass bills to create Offices of Pedestrians + Active Transportation, to ensure we all have a voice in City Hall.
A collaboration among
@evgrieve
,
@evccnyc
, and local super-volunteers has resulted in this great map of open business in the East Village:
Know of a business that's open in the EV that's not on the map? Email us and we'll share the survey form.
Many thanks to
@MetCouncil
who helped us reach East Village seniors today in need of food. This insecurity has increased during the pandemic and we’re thankful to our partners for their continued commitment.
Join us Thursday to support passage of Int. 289, which will require DOT to create a map showing conditions affecting bike lanes, including obstructions caused by street construction, maintenance or repair, weather + other hazards, helping enhance the citywide bike network 🚴♀️🏙️
We're happy to assist local businesses like
@TSBagels
navigate city bureaucracy. Glad to see their gas is back on, letting them serve the neighborhood at 100% again.
Thanks to
@evgrieve
for covering!
Migrants and refugees continue to arrive in NYC, but my team is still getting calls from volunteer groups that shelters are falling short on language services and lacking interpreters.
@NYCMayor
, we need to meet the demand and empower volunteers to directly assist these families.
#OpenCulture
is bringing a lot of joy to people. We caught
@nycdanceproject
on East 26th Street where dozens of happy New Yorkers got to connect with live performance again.
For perspective, more people voted on Day 2 of Early Voting in Manhattan than on Day 1 - and the wait times were generally shorter. H/T to
@BOENYC
on the improvements, and to the poll workers for keeping things moving.
Voting can get better in NYC if we all work together.
Early Voting Cumulative totals!! Please note this includes Day 1 👏🏼👏🏼
New York - 40,838
Bronx - 30,484
Brooklyn - 61,315
Queens - 40,278
Staten Island - 21,000

Corporations own 89% of housing units in NYC, and its growing. Yesterday advocates from local orgs rallied to keep housing in the hands of New Yorkers and support important policies that promote social housing, like my bill, the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act.
@KelseyChapstick
Hi, thank you for flagging this. Can someone give us a call to provide further information? 212-677-1077.
We just spoke to the 9th precinct and they are telling us no matter citizenship, a police report should and can be filled at the precinct or through 911.

#COVID19
TESTING UPDATE: City-run sites will now be open 7 days/week, with new locations opening next week. If there is a line, NYers will be able to pick up an at-home test where available.
To find a test near you, visit or text COVID TEST to 855-48.
I’m proud to champion policies that protect the wellbeing of animals and am pleased to put forward legislation led by
@CMShahanaHanif
to limit captivity of elephants. Many animals suffer in captivity and we have a moral obligation to do better.
It’s been nearly 4 months since Donni Wright was brutally assaulted by NYPD Officer Francisco Garcia. Yet Garcia remains on the force w/ no explanation.
Today our LES community is gathering to demand justice - Tune In!
Today marks the 12th person to die this year alone at Rikers. How many more deaths do we need before the administration addresses this crisis?
We demand action and accountability from
@CorrectionNYC
and
@NYCMayor
, and I'm calling for an emergency hearing to make sure we get it.
This week alone, two lives were claimed by gun violence in my district.
Our communities can't wait. NYC must use every tool available to reduce the number of guns on our streets. That's why my Council colleagues and I are working to introduce a citywide gun buyback initiative.
Join us today to support passage of Int. 289, which will require DOT to create a map showing conditions affecting bike lanes, including obstructions caused by street construction, maintenance or repair, weather + other hazards, helping enhance the citywide bike network 🚴♀️🏙️
Thank you so much to Jaelee, a student at the Institute for Collaborative Learning, for visiting our office to drop off letters from students calling for a ban on horse carriages. We look forward to working on legislation this term on animal care and cruelty.
@nyclass
I'll trust that the water at Riis Houses is safe to consume when the Mayor drinks from the tap to show that city agencies have done their job—and when the Admin gets serious about streamlining interagency coordination so New Yorkers are never left in the dark like this again.
The NYC Committee on Criminal Justice joins

Clean Curbs come to District 2! Thanks to
@nyuniversity
@UnionSquareNY
for this new program to keep our sidewalks cleaner and safer to walk down. And thanks to
@ebottcher
for always lending a hand!
We helped get a lot of food to buildings across the district this week. This was possible due to the partnership of local businesses, non-profit food organizations and dozens of volunteers from across the East Side. 1/
The 14th St Busway has been a resounding success but that doesn’t mean we can’t make it even better. That’s why I organized a walk-through tonight with
#District2
residents &
@NYC_DOT
to discuss how we can improve signage, enforcement and other areas around this exciting project.
Back in February we went to Albany to fight for capital $$$ for public housing. Can't think of a more worthy jobs program when this crisis is behind us than to fix
@NYCHA
infrastructure.
Tonight we had the 3rd water outage at Baruch Houses in a week. This cannot continue!
I'm proud to pass legislation to enhance the citywide bike network, with my latest bill creating a searchable bike infrastructure map, showing conditions affecting lanes and more. We must do more to protect lives + build cycling into a safe, accessible way of getting around.
Riis Houses residents are understandably anxious and confused. We need immediate answers on the status of their water, transparency in next steps, and consequences for the City's missteps in handling an unacceptable situation that warrants the utmost urgency.
🆕 I joined my colleagues
@ShaunAbreu
,
@EricDinowitzNYC
, +
@RitaJosephNYC
to demand restoration of the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for incarcerated students in the FY23 State Budget.
TAP changes lives — we can't allow incarcerated students to be left out or left behind.
We're fighting for
#FairRentNYC
to protect our neighborhoods and ensure long-term stability for the small business community, because we refuse to lose another beloved business to soaring commercial rents.
We must pass
#Intro93
for a truly just and equitable pandemic recovery.
@CydeWeys
This was a misunderstanding based on a DOT inspector visit. We stopped by and the owner was very apologetic and will not be blocking the bike lane anymore.
Try the venue directly first, then yoir Council Member.
With a letter of sufficiency from the feds, New York can finally move forward with its
#congestionpricing
program that will enhance our transit systems and street safety. With traffic violence at historic highs, we must use every tool to protect lives.
⚠️ RIIS WATER UPDATE: We’re alarmed by yesterday’s news at Riis Houses. We’ve been on site ensuring families have updates + drinkable water. As we await more test results, DO NOT consume water from the building.
NYCHA + DOHMH must give answers on previous findings + remediation.
🚨🚨 ATTN: LES 🚨🚨
FREE at-home rapid test kits will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at Masaryk Towers (75 Columbia Street) starting at 9AM tomorrow, Thursday, December 23.
🧪 As a reminder, the mobile testing site at Masaryk will be open from 8AM to 7PM.
Today I’m proud to pass a bill thru committee + Council to establish a citywide resource navigator program for women and gender-expansive persons to facilitate connections to alternatives to incarceration and re-entry services. Thanks to colleagues, especially TGNCNBI task force.
This evening I rallied with neighbors, advocates + colleagues to call on the Rent Guidelines Board to roll back the rent. The Board could raise rents 16% at a time 50% of NYers don’t make enough to meet basic needs! New Yorkers are tired and deserve better!
Read this personal account from David Campbell on the importance of receiving physical mail while incarcerated on Rikers. He illustrates the human impact a policy to prohibit the delivery of physical mail would have.
Don’t let DOC ban love! The prohibition of the delivery of physical mail furthers isolation and is a cruel policy that hasn’t been proven to be an effective way to stop contraband from entering Rikers. I’m continuing to call on BOC to reject this variance request.
NYC is not safer with more people in jail. We must close Rikers by 2027 and make investments in housing, mental health services + alternatives to incarceration programs. Join today at 2 p.m. as I Chair Committee on Criminal Justice Executive Budget hearing
If you’re looking for a summer activity or interested in a new book, stop by our District Office (254 East 4th St) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12PM - 2PM to pick up a reading kit 📚
Thank you to

for providing us with materials for all ages!
Not everyone finds staying home to be safe when they encounter violence on a daily basis.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or sexual violence, please call New York State's hotline for help: 1-800-942-6906
For years, NYers have fought to limit the City from conspiring with ICE, and I commend the ICE Out! NYC campaign, and could not be prouder to support this campaign’s goal to stop DOC + NYPD from working with ICE in the detention and deportation of our immigrant communities.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the US, and for adults in New York City. Today I am helping to raise awareness about heart health, and encourage all women to speak to their doctors, be proactive and take preventative measures.

Today Board of Correction refused to vote on DOC request to prohibit delivery of mail and packages to people who are incarcerated, meaning the request is denied. Many were opposed -advocates and board members- to this misguided and harmful request that lacked data to justify.

This should never have happened to Tabatha. Her case is exactly the kind our lactation rights laws are supposed to protect against - now our city agencies need to step up enforcement so that no women ever has to have this experience in NYC again.
We’re here at Vladeck Houses with book bags getting ready for back to school! Thanks to
@HispanicFed
and the residents for spending a great morning with us.
Thank you
@NYCSanitation
for walking the East Village with me and bringing *Better Bins* to Avenue A 🗑
These new bins will keep more litter (and rats!) off of the sidewalk. Excited to welcome this problem-solving innovation in my district and discuss upcoming improvements.
Our office joined the End Apartment Warehousing + Stand for Tenant Safety coalitions to tour apts on East Side experiencing warehousing + frankensteining, which keeps affordable units off market and creates dangerous conditions. I have legislation w/
@galeabrewer
to address this
Air quality levels today are expected to be unhealthy and hazardous, and the City is advising that residents limit outdoor activity. We have N95 masks available at our district office at 254 E 4th St for pick up through 5 pm, while supplies last.
I want to thank
@NYCSpeakerCoJo
,
@DianaAyalaNYC

@MarkLevineNYC
for joining me in calling on Albany to pass a budget that restores critical health cuts and finally fixes inequities that have existed in our safety net hospital funding formula for far too long.
Car Free Earth Day on Avenue B is off to an awesome start with
@DQSHtweets
reading to kids about how to be green.
Thank you
@NYC_DOT
,
@Loisaida_OSCC
, and community partners for making our streets fun and safe for all ages.
Our office was proud to organize a day of action alongside colleagues and advocates for the city’s 3-K programs. We hope to raise awareness about the availability of open slots with childcare providers across the city.
I'm so proud to have made the Open Streets program permanent and love working with local public space advocates to rethink how we interact with the built environment + each other. I encourage you to submit testimony and tune into hearing at 10 a.m. today
New York City deserves bold leadership to tackle the housing and affordability crisis, and I’m proud to support
@NYCSpeakerAdams
as she presents the comprehensive “Fair Housing Framework” legislative plan. At a time 50% of NYers cannot afford basic needs, we must do more.
Happy Three Kings Day! This celebration of our culture and heritage is a great tradition in NYC and I was honored to walk with neighbors, artists, and students for
@elmuseo

I joined my fellow
@BLACaucusNYC

Today I'll co-Chair oversight hearing w/
@galeabrewer
on DOC’s transportation of detained individuals to court. 87% of those on Rikers are pre-trial + detained 115 days on avg. Missed court appearances lead to more time in jail and reduced safety for all.
Exciting news for residents of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Direct access to almost 200 acres of open space!

Our arts and cultural organizations need our support and I am grateful to all of the New Yorkers enjoying our amazing institutions.
As most recent independent fed monitor report has revealed violent, life-altering incidents in last 2 weeks, we must take every step necessary to increase accountability + transparency in the City jail system. Read my joint statement with
@NYCSpeakerAdams
The Federal Monitor’s latest report detailing recent incidents of violence in city jails illustrated repeated failures by DOC to be accountable & transparent to NYers. Its response to withhold info from the public represents a continuing pattern of disregard for oversight.
Last week I visited neighbors w ongoing repair needs at Wald, Riis, + Baruch Houses, and what I saw is unacceptable. Broken floors, walls, sinks + bathrooms unusable, apts in disrepair. Heading into holidays, too many families cannot host or cook for their friends + family.
⚠️ RIIS HOUSES UPDATE: ~1700 NYCHA families remain without drinking water. Residents live in constant crisis and the City must face repercussions. Tomorrow’s test results from DEP/DOH should determine arsenic levels. For now, support, treatment + a prevention plan are priorities.
Today we broke ground with our NYCHA leaders in anticipation of a playground renovation at Vladeck Houses. We allocated $500K to make this area new, improved and ADA-accessible.
Our office is collecting feedback about siren noise across NYC. Scan the QR code or click the link so we can better understand how sirens are impacting your quality of life as we fight for the passage of siren reduction legislation.

NYC is becoming prohibitively expensive, and it's affecting the collective identity of our city. We must protect our rent-stabilized housing stock and ensure it's affordability. For too long the RGB has favored landlords, and it's time for the RGB to provide relief to renters.
