The Astor Place Starbucks closed for good last night. The SB signage is gone from this 4k-foot space, which they'd been in since March '95. Management told @Joy_of_photos that "the landlords jacked up the rent so astronomically high that even corporate Starbucks couldn't pay it."

When workers removed the bar from the former Grassroots Tavern (1975-2017) on St. Mark's Place last week, they discovered these old murals. I have no idea how old they old. The landmarked building dates to 1832. [Photos by Derek Berg]

ICYMI: Astor Wines & Spirits (@astorwines), founded in 1946, has been sold to its employees. The Fisher family has owned & operated the business since 1968. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The shop at 399 Lafayette St. @ 4th Street has 75 employees.

On Sunday, E. Jay Sims hung a large shirtwaist dress on the top-floor fire escape at 306 Bowery at 1st Street. She mounted the dress in honor of Women's History Month, and in memory of the deadly Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, whose 110th anniversary is March 25. 1/2

The Tompkins Square Park holiday tree lighting ceremony took place late this afternoon. As we're told, @NYCParks forgot to wire the tree, and so organizers had to scramble to hire an electrician, who missed the bottom portion of the tree. *Perfect!*

Good news: Inexpensive eats favorite Punjabi Grocery & Deli reopens Friday (7/10) here at 114 First St. b/t Avenue A and 1st Avenue. Hours have yet to be determined. They've been closed since March 21 during the COVID-19 crisis.

When a young red-tailed hawk gets stuck in the airshaft outside your kitchen window. An East Village resident made this discovery this morning! The hawk is fine, and with the assistance of Rob M., a park ranger, it is back with its 2 siblings in Tompkins Square Park.

The Cube (aka Alamo) is back on Astor Place (as of last night) after spending the past 2-plus months in the shop. It had been out of commission since December 2021. The spinning mechanism for the Cube, which manually rotates around a pole hidden in its center, wasn't working. 1/2
