Asteroid City is explicitly about how the dollhouse is a safe space - for Wes, for all of us - to broach what we can’t face head-on precisely because we’re suffocating in emotion. It’s a movie about why Wes Anderson makes Wes Anderson movies, and why we respond to them.
Asteroid City's "don't try to understand it, feel it" ethos would be a whole lot more admirable if Wes' micromanaged dollhouses didn't suffocate experiential emotion. As is, there's more to understand and analyze than there is to feel.

My dad did a brilliant thing. When camcorders were invented, he’d bring his parents to the house, project the silent, 8mm home movies they took when he was a kid, train the camcorder on the projection, and record everyone’s dialogue, remembering the past, as the video played.
