People are a lot less likely to bring stuff up in a group of friends, especially primarily male or all male groups, because they don't want to rock the boat or whatever.

This DM spent the vast majority of the session asking what we wanted to do and spent very little time telling us what happened to us.
Next surprise. He asked me if there was anything I didn't like. I couldn't think of anything, but at least he asked.

I started in 1980. I did session zero like stuff before there were even words for it. Session zero is not just about a character dying. I beg you to do some research and think a little before being so passive/aggressive on this. Things like this make it hard for old guys like me.

Very few DMs in those days asked if folks were having fun. They just assumed since they were taking on the role of Dungeon Master, they could do no wrong and the players would just have to deal with it.
I left a lot of campaigns in the 80s, because that was about the only choice

I had finally found someone else who, like me, wanted to have fun witj the players rather than at their expense. And he didn't just assume folks had fun, but asked to make sure they had fun.
On my first leave I was talking with some folks I gamed with and told them about this.

Thankfully, gaming has evolved and so have a lot of the players. But there are still bad apples.
It took ten years before a DM ever asked if I had fun, or even seemed to care. And these were people who "knew" me and were my "friends".

So I went back to being a DM again and again. It wasn't until I was in the Navy and got into a gaming group that things changed a bit. I met a group at the USO and they invited me in.
The DM asked at the end of the session if I had fun. And I had.

I am once again asking that gaming resources such as monster catalogues to give normal, real life animals the challenge rating they are do.
Moose can travel 30 to 40 MPH at a sustained pace and weigh up to 1400 lbs, and be up to 6'6" at the shoulder. That will hurt you.

It is only weird if you choose it to be. These things may look out of place in Western European folklore, but if DnD had been invented by someone steeped in Hinduism the character that DIDN'T look like a Tiefling or Dragonborn would be the one out of place.

Quit the campaign and make sure everyone who would listen would know what a trash fire that DM is. There was a guy like that in the Navy, DMed some sessions for us, and we eventually asked him to stop coming to our gaming group because of the constant character abuse he did.
