I read about entire families being wiped out in Palestine and Israel save for one member who will carry the loss and pain and devastation for the rest of their lives. Their governments do not speak for them, yet we insist on making them one and the same.
There’s a lot of discourse on this app about what birthday triggers “middle age” but I’d suggest it’s the first time you see a headline about celebrities and think “I have no idea who these people are—not even a little”
Here’s what I have learned from the far-left since Oct. 7
- tokenism is good actually
- race science is real
- folks who spent the decade calling everyone a fascist/nazi are totally cool with being either if it’s against a group they have deemed an “oppressor”
- the below
1/
So glad the far-left has decided to embrace their very own mentally ill and ignorant version of blood and soil race-based nationalism. Apparently you can’t have any middle Eastern ancestry unless you look and dress just like a member of the Saudi royal family.
Oliver Anthony: “We are the melting pot of the world and that’s what makes us strong, our diversity”
Such a let down. Did he sell out already to the rich men north of Richmond?
Another reason you should let writers have input in headlines. This is a good article and the journalist knows that Chernobyl is in Ukraine! But the headline writer seems not to and it makes the writer’s life worse.
This kind of stuff really does make me worried for the future. There have always been assholes but I have the sense that adults used to understand “hey I’m the grown up what are you going to do” and now it’s like “kids aren’t allowed to exist bc of my personal issues”
@KFILE
I have two teenage boys! Two bloomin' onions, a steak salad, lobster tails, a filet, a chicken sandwich and a sirloin + tip + tax = $125 on Doordash right now. It's crazy.
- we should not, in fact, “lbelieve all women
- the Holocaust is nbd bc a lot of shit happened in the past but the creation of Israel must be a fought for hundreds of years
- terrorist groups that starve, slaughter & steal from their own people are wonderful freedom fighters
3/
Enough with this. What Hamas did was monstrous and evil in every way. Palestinians are not Hamas, they are their victims as well. Please stop conflating these terrorists with this people.
- Ben Shapiro speaking in public is literally violence but the harassment, vandalism, etc we see now is just free speech
- freedom of speech should, in fact, mean freedom from consequences
- it’s ok to hold a US citizen “accountable” for the actions of their country of origin

I don’t know if this is true but it does seem to be true that talking to lots of people every day—strangers, coworkers, whoever—makes people happier and my sense is that people are doing that less for a variety of reasons.
As long as we're basically making stuff up, I think remote work is a dysfunctional equilibrium state that makes people miserable but that it's also hard to get out of once the norms are broken because commuting to an empty office in an empty office district is worst of all.
I genuinely think large swaths of people on this site are having very visible mental breakdowns and need genuine help. If you have friends who normally say sorta weird shit and they go off the deep end into extreme paranoia, get them help.
It’s actually complete insane to fully swallow terrorist propaganda & do work on their behalf, especially by quote-tweeting the “Israel did 9/11” guy. My trust in many, many journalists had been waning over the past several years but clearly not enough.
If I’m reading this right, Hamas is saying it will cooperate with an ICC investigation into its own 10/7 assault while also pushing for an investigation into allegations against Israel. The international criminal court is the right venue for these charges to be tested.
I genuinely don’t know how you look at even the extremes of the past decade and think “Americans are willing to engage in a bloody battle that would disrupt or even end their comparatively comfortable lives”
I’ve seen responses like this for weeks. Do people honestly think that holding huge rallies on Oct 8, the day after Hamas brutally tortured, raped & slaughtered hundreds, wasn’t a clear message to the terrorist group? That they can do this & still be supported even in the West?
I didn’t want to comment on the trump indictment until I actually read it but I was ready believe this was a bad idea that could cause real blowback and come across as hypocritical. Very glad I did wait because if that shit is true the prosecutors had no real choice.
@jacyanthis
@pfau
See I disagree, eventually they will use ChatGPT to generate the lines their kids supposedly came up with but AI could never top Ruthkanda.
Palestine receives billions in aid from around the world—Hamas keeps stealing it, as Arafat & others did before. The idea that Hamas cares about Palestinian lives is truly ludicrous. None of this is secret but these people don’t care because it doesn’t fit their narrative.
@JedediahBila
This speaks so poorly of you. Do you have any sense of the lessons this may teach your children? Do you want them mocking people’s appearances on the internet?
I have said this over and over again but it still boggles my mind: The far left and far right seem wholly set on conflating Hamas and Palestinians. The former then do atrocity denial and cheer on a monstrous terrorist group as “freedom fighters.” It’s truly amazing. 1/
What do people attribute gen z’s insane disgust, fear and hatred of touching other people to? Is it the phones? Like they got used to being alone “talking to people” through a screen and now any sort of show of affection sends them into a tail spin?
A few themes of the past decade on this dumb app have rolled up into the absolutely bonkers Oppenheimer discourse.
1) an inability to understand a work of art is not advocating for the subject it covers unless “AND THAT WAS BAD” is seared into the title
This post nails it
I’m not convinced they do. We told a whole generation that if they said the word problematic enough and assumed the behavior of every character was 100% beloved and endorsed by the author, they didn’t have to read anything difficult and challenging
It’s not any one thing, but Twitter just feels so dull these days and behind on everything. I used to feel like I had to be here or I’d miss things but now it’s just boring and repetitive—we’re way past reruns, we’re in syndication in TBS—and also sluggish. It’s so blah.
@bernybelvedere
Wait, is the implication of the last tweet that he gave him and enormous monetary tip (good) or that simply being in proximity to him makes people successful (not real)?
The Arab states have been such incredibly bad actors over the years—keeping Palestinians as refugees to use as cudgels in their personal fights—that if they are now on board (in earnest) everyone has just gotta bite the bullet bc it’s now or never for peace.
if you look at surveys of Palestinians over time, their support for a two state solution has declined as their support of violent groups like Hamas has increased; it is a fantasy to think you can forever deny a people control over their own destiny and have them meekly accept it
@JonathanKadmon
@JHWeissmann
I honestly don’t know when it happened but at some point the Left decided “letting people scream maximalist positions in the most belligerent ways” was a good idea. Why? They suck up oxygen and alienate potential allies. What benefit do you see here?
It’s actually disgusting people are using the murder of a six-year-old to score cheap points against Jews for feeling afraid. So f-ing disrespectful to the family and to everyone really.
So the dumbest most racist white people across the country just invented a “global day of jihad” for Friday the 13th, bosses & employers told their employees to be safe on the “global day of jihad,” social media let it spread, and now a Muslim child in Chicago has been murdered.
Folks, one of the tenets of anti-Semitism in Israel’s view is double standards. So if you write an article saying that having a Jewish state is “racist” without noting there are several explicitly Islamic states surrounding them, yeah folks are not going to take that seriously.
I’ve seen folks claiming the killer was Jewish & corrected them (he’s Catholic) but had missed the cause of it. CAIR has a long track record of anti-semitism but even I didn’t expect them to try to inflame an already fraught situation and use this horrifying tragedy as a cudgel.
A senior CAIR official insinuating that Joseph Czuba, behind the horrific killing of a a six-year-old Muslim boy, is Jewish.
This is *precisely* the blood libel. It's sickening that CAIR is again fanning the flames of antisemitism.
Folks the NYT has made some disastrous mistakes of late but this is not one of them. I read the sheriff’s report out of Chicago—there was a very clear motive from the beginning. We still do not know the motive in the other case and pretending we do is irresponsible.
When a Palestinian gets murdered, the attack is an anti-Muslim hate crime.
When the president of a synagogue gets murdered, the motive cannot be known.
The
@nytimes
is becoming blatantly antisemitic—glad I cancelled my subscription.
@bkabak
My sister lived in Dumbo in the early 90’s and it was so cheap and easy to get to by train but there also wasn’t a grocery store within ten blocks of her and the toilet was in the living room
@larabazelon
That’s a common misconception but it’s not accurate. 60% of Americans barely drink. The “American average drinks per week” is wildly skewed by the top 10% that consumes a HUGE amount of booze
@dodaistewart
Look, I am a “I wear this specific style of jeans regardless of trends because it looks good on me” person and now a bunch of brands have just stopped making this formerly-ubiquitous style.
Watching historically illiterate sociopaths continually say women deserve to be raped and children deserve to be kidnapped is simply amazing. It is more than possible to have empathy for the Palestinian people, abhor their treatment and also know that Hamas is a terrorist group.
I think I finally understand why leftists are insistent that Hamas = Palestinians.
They are desperate to conflate the two so they can legitimize the torture and slaughter of Jews—so they can conflate Israel’s government & Israelis and fulfill their Fanon-inspired fanfic.
The idea that Hamas cares one iota for Palestinians has been proven false over and over again
“Hamas has spent years stockpiling desperately needed fuel, food and medicine, as well as ammo and weapons, in the miles of tunnels it has carved out under Gaza”
Seeing the children killed in Gaza is unbearable, but there is no one I pray for more than their parents. Parents shouldn’t outlive their children, this is so horrifying and another reason why this must end.
Genuinely astonished people believe what Hamas did was on behalf of the Palestinian people and not on behalf of their own power and malice. How unmoored from reality can one possibly be?
@EricLevitz
Can atrocities be part of a just uprising? Why does this specific and sporadic crime (unless you have compelling evidence to the contrary) of Arab men raping Jewish women beggar scrutiny?
I don’t want to deny anyone else’s experience but just want to share that becoming a mother has not only been rewarding but extremely fun and my life has gotten bigger and better in every way because of it. (1/2)
To be fair, Ulysses was the first book I read that portrayed the female orgasm in prose. But, seriously, the only thing I can hope for is that the teenage rebellious spirit drives these kids to see what all the fuss is about & take an interest in why these books are “threatening”
This is nuts: Hundreds of books have now been pulled from schools across Iowa, many due to a new law targeting depictions of "sex acts." They include:
1984
Brave New World
Slaughterhouse-Five
Ulysses
Critics of these laws have been vindicated. Free link:

But he’s also weird in an upsetting way (as opposed to an endearing one). Masters seems like he has a basement full of human organs he dissects on the weekends.
“There’s a genocide going on but we won’t sign our names to a feckless and now-unverifiable letter” is genuinely one of the most cowardly things I’ve ever heard. If you think this is genocide you should be banging down the doors, at least sign your names.
More than 400 congressional staffers anonymously signed a letter urging Congress to back a cease-fire. Here's what they told me -- and why they feel the need to remain anonymous.
@yhdistyminen
I totally get what you’re saying and I mostly agree but these may be downstream effects of the sex. So if he is more sexually aroused by her now and that intimacy is back in the picture it’s possible that the rest is a result of the associated bonding and closeness
@dieworkwear
My parents knew some old money folks back in the day and their whole thing was never buying new clothes. They had fancy items but they were twenty years old and threadbare. Anything new was a basic. It was all very Brideshead Revisited.
This is wild. I started babysitting at 12. The idea that someone that age cannot take care of a baby alone for a period of time, much less themselves for an afternoon, is so new in human history.
people complaining about kids no longer going outside or riding bikes is because if you try to be a normal parent, other psycho helicopter parents will call the cops on you
@DKThomp
How much of this is cars? Because when I was growing up i was basically a latch key kid but if my folks were surrounded by the ubiquitous huge trucks and SUVs. That show little care for bikers or pedestrians not sure what it would have been like
@katewillett
Hi Kate, I am a YIMBY and disagree with you but I also know that pile-ons can make people dig in further. I just wanted to say that I hope these Twitter fights don’t consume too much of your mental energy or identity. This place is not worth it on any level.
Netanyahu & his government (now and in the past) had a symbiotic-to-parasitic relationship with Hamas. Both must go because if one group stays and the other does not I have no doubt this cycle will repeat.
Dude is defying a subpoena and bragging about the original crime on tape while spelling out that his defense is false and dangling tantalizing tidbits of highly classified information to reporters and political folks.
@LibyaLiberty
Her husband is still in captivity. Do you think she feels free to discuss everything right now? And do you think “being beaten with a crowbar” is a pretty low bar to set for things getting “better”?
Reuters: Peter Thiel, Republican megadonor, won’t fund candidates in 2024: "Thiel is unhappy with the Republican Party's focus on hot-button U.S. cultural issues, said one of the sources."
There are 17 small countries which are still colonies and if majorities in any of them want independence they should get it. But too many academics based their work on post-colonialism so now folks claim Israel is a colonial project & we have to decolonize potatoes or whatever
If you succeed in problematizing and cancelling all of America's shared civic holidays and rituals what do you think is going to happen next? (Hint: it's not going to be *more* intergroup solidarity and *improved* prospects for social justice.)
@FuckCarsReddit
GOOD POINT. There are so many street fairs in cities that always take place on the same streets and they should all have these. Also all culs-de-sac and alleys where kids learn to ride bikes/play.
And while I do not in any way believe he was selling info or whatever, if I were a spy I would have my government buy me a Maralago membership and flatter this doofus until he let me read all the docs. They don’t even have to be a good secret agents! This was in the news!
The faculty letter itself says many ridiculous things and I honestly can’t imagine paying for my kid to be taught by such dishonest people in general, but this is truly egregious.
“When we finally deal that final blow to destroy Israel. When the state of Israel is finally destroyed and erased from history, that will be the single most important blow we can give to destroying capitalism.”
-Manolo De Los Santos speaking at The People’s Forum in NYC.
This is all 100% true. But there are many on the left who claim all Israelis are “settlers” either out of ignorance or hate and journalists have a responsibility to clearly define this group.
To everyone on the American Right: the settlements are terrible, they are theft, they are quasi-colonization, they are illegal, and while there many things wrong with what Palestinians say about Israel, the settlements materially contribute to the conflict.
I think people should be less concerned with college students dumb ideas and more concerned that they show absolutely no ability to debate ideas grounded in fact. It’s just astonishing.
