While this narrative is popular and important, think it is important that we remember that hair braiding predates the cross Atlantic slave trade.
Hair braiding was ceremonial long before it was survival.
In days of slavery, African women built maps & messages into braids. Their hair could signal plans to escape or represent trails, rivers & mountains. Some even hid gold & seeds in the braids.
Black women blow my mind.

If you know a young person in the UK who is an avid reader but cannot afford to buy books, let me know, this week, I want to give 2 young readers some money to spend at Independent Black owned bookstores in the UK.
My yearly reminder for everyone, regardless of gender identification to take a pregnancy test today because babies are rude.
And you who thinks that you are celibate, does your baby know?
It was around this time, on this same day last year that I was wheeled into the hospital with my family thinking I had a severe liver problem, only to be told I was 32weeks & 2 days pregnant

Look to yourself. You free. Nothing and nobody is obliged to save you but you. Seed your own land. You young and a woman and there's serious limitations in both, but you a person too.

Yes it is, my reason for amplifying is that very often, the Black historic stories that are amplified revolve around enslavement and i always want to ensure we earmark them with stories prior. No bad blood, just know how important it is to amplify more than one narrative.
The framing of the children they have biologically had as "two of MY OWN" reflects a position of adopted children as other - and that's enough to understand the absurdity of their stance.
Did Solange ever tell us what worked in Cranes in the sky because I have only realised that I have been living every thing she tried and also failing to find success.
Some books suffer from being written in English. Reading a book where a person from Peru is trying to call back their ancestry and the story is clearly resistant to being written in English.
Sometimes colonial languages cannot carry our stories.
I can’t imagine proudly letting everyone know that you are basically a succubus. Anyone that pours into you is drained like pure water sachet, and you’re proud?
Because if I looked back on my love life and saw empty vessels, I’d have fear, not pride in my voice.
The thing about not settling, about stepping into the vastness of your potential is that the workload trebles and the labour truly begins. Adulthood is realising the fulfilment and exhaustion are two sides of the same coin.

Accidentally matching the cover but we'll pretend it was intentional.
Congratulations to

I am asking the important questions, pretty sure babies are just finding wombs to settle in because everyday I hear stories about people going into the hospital with chest pains and coming home with a baby - HOW?
I'm looking to speak with women who don't identify as feminists, either the word or the movement. You can be quoted anon for the article - ideally West African women as it'll be published in a Nigerian publication.
Please RT.

Babe go on his Instagram and see him championing oppressed American minority women then pack your bags and get ready to move to Wyoming because this is a white man of marriageable character.
Suns out, guns out!
But seriously this is one heck of a book. Always knew that Nigeria was a wild country but the backstory is still a expert display of messiness.
@FolaFagbule

@DoubleEph
did a wonderful job of pulling it all together in Formation.
A reminder that different cultures have different attitudes to this. Reflect your cultural history in how you wear a thing but do not make it unilateral. And here I am talking about Black African cultures solely.
Honestly, ever impressed with

At church today, someone prayed for me and said: “I pray that you fall back in love with the things that spark the very core of you in a way that candy floss is sweet to a child” and I hope that for every single person who sees this.
Yesterday I was V.I.P Beyonce. Today I have washed bathroom, swept floors, cooked meat, blended pepper and become my mother's hairdresser. Life comes at you fast when you're a Nigerian girl who refuses to move to her husbands house.

Why does something have to preface our decision to try something new.
Ideally, western audiences would try new literature for the desire to explore rather than desire Eton return to a "genre" previously enjoyed.

Tell her shoes are a social construct designed to limit the freedom of motion for women 😂.
In the context of Pocahontas' life, there is a history predating whiteness that can perhaps be taught here. Otherwise, Disney has really tried us.
Genevieve Nnaji has always been the work hard in silence lady of Nollywood. Through the judgements about her being a teen mother and blatant sexism in the industry, she stayed focused. So proud to have her as a beacon of Nigerian female excellence.
Very excited to be joining the

The media repeatedly questioned him in a way that allowed him to think that it was OK to do this - that he had a choice about staying in or leaving office, so here we are.

Reading "western" reviews of the book, it was hard to avoid these comparisons so I thought it best to shortly address it and move on.
It's a shame that our books have to be put again western narratives to be relatable for new audiences. Working on how best to avoid the trap.
Starting this year in St.Lucia to rest and work remotely has been such a good decision. Mangoes, fruitcake and sun while I clear up emails is truly the easeful working I deserve.
So honoured to have been asked by

, out this week!
I was struck by the relationships to the family's patriarch and inspired to explore mine and what it has, does and will mean for me.
"My brother owns his name in a way that I never can, simply by virtue of gender."
What's in a name? The importance of maiden names and rejecting patriarchal ownership:
There are people across Africa doing work to help the slaves in Libya. At this point 3000 people have been returned to Nigeria through these efforts. Let's spotlight this work and support it. Let's save ourselves again.

How are people arguing about this? Because there's liquor doesn't make it less of a work setting. If you slap your boss at the Christmas Party in the name of intoxication you're still getting fired on Monday.
Was such a pleasure to see

It will forever be a privilege of my life to be surrounded by Black women writers in motion.
To be perfectly dramatic, if this is not on your 2024 reading list, update her NOW!
First read when it was out on submissions and have read twice since and it's a perfect debut.
Want to argue, read it first.
Out now in the US, 28th March UK and 6th May Nigeria.

Selling Sunset season 4 is wild because Christine put no effort into her lies, the plot holes were craters. Kudos on commitment to narrative though.
Also if Amanza needs a father for her kids, I am willing because that woman is spectacularly fine.

I am very concerned that we have popular access to Things Fall Apart but do not talk about the generational trauma of being raised by parents and grandparents that grew up colonized.

Everyone wants the Christian forgiveness, but not the kindness, the goodness, the meekness, the protectiveness, the aspect of it that is not envious or self-seeking...
Whiteness continues to twist the gospel to serve itself.
