Tony Chambers, former CEO at the Countess of Chester Hospital, actively impaired paediatricians from involving police when they suspected babies were being murdered
If this doesn’t constitute criminal negligence, and doesn’t warrant a jail sentence, then I don’t know what does
One of the amazing privileges of being a paediatrician :
every August , parents of my patients send me exam results , sometimes kids who people didn’t think would survive … sometimes kids with debilitating chronic respiratory illness. they do so well, against all the odds 👍🏽✊🏽
@mspanish
To try and shame a group of *actual ED workers*, without context of either photo, is inappropriate and unnecessary. Nobody in the comments has any idea of their professionalism or otherwise.
Please don’t do things like this. ED teams are under enough pressure without a pile on
Before Twitter dies, I must stress again how much I endorse
@IanByrneMP
, and hope Labour members in Liverpool see what I see -
A man who puts his neck on the line for his communities, and especially for children. No other MP has been so forceful that food is a human right
One man will be made the most superior man in the country, because of his birth circumstances
That day 4.2 million children will be in poverty, in his country, because of their birth circumstances
Royalist or republican - surely we all agree that this is obscene
Done, home, and going to sleep for 6 days

outline the catastrophic effects of food costs in an impassioned and evidence-based parliamentary debate
Our children are living in a humanitarian crisis- as paediatricians we must say Enough is Enough
Ian ✊🏽♥️👏🏽giving a voice to children
I called a debate in Parliament on the cost of food.
Food inflation is at 16.4% - the highest since 1977 - and a 1/3 of West Derby are going hungry.
I spoke about appalling profiteering by companies, and what the Government could do to solve this catastrophe.

@sainsburys
Quite right Sue, people are absolutely allowed to hold racist views
All these guys are saying is take your racism and shop elsewhere.
So they are happy, and you are happy, what’s the issue ?
“What about those of us who don’t like diversity” she says, chewing on some gammon
Please please please please vaccinate your children against measles
Those who have seen little ones at the sharp end of measles infection are dreading this .
it can be so devastatingly serious that I’ve thought some of these kids had cancer
absolutely preventable
I once met Mark Lawrenson in a bar in Newcastle when I was a student
He knocked my pints over, and couldn’t have cared less,
The absolute *legend* that is Gary Speed was mortified, he replaced my drinks, and we chatted for ages.
The worst and best of football
This is spine chilling:
Just heard from Lorna
@ChildrenNE
:
A teenage girl needing to use her mums bus pass to ride the Newcastle buses every evening , in order to access Wi-Fi, in order to simply do her homework
What a ridiculous society we have created .
As it’s the start of September , this is just the annual friendly reminder that babies with bronchiolitis can have a temperature, so you can put the LP needle down 👍🏽
We have a sick country, not a sick note culture, and this government and its policies are one of the drivers
They decimated mental health services, and now they want doctors to downplay the importance of mental health
Not an ounce of compassion
My piece in

We must poverty-proof our services, and try and mitigate against the impacts of child poverty….. but the best answer is to eradicate it.

about

#PovertyKillsChildren
We need a new vision of how the country could be for our babies and children - not sticking plasters, or trickle down nonsense… meaningful investment in kids
Why should free school meals be universal?
1) it’s not cost effective to means test- it’s cheaper to offer to all
2) the stigma of free school meals means that uptake is low… removing the stigma of poverty is one of the most important things we can do
Asthma = ill health
Mould = cause of ill Health
Poverty = cause of cause of ill Health
Governmental choices = cause of cause of cause of ill Health
To paraphrase Desmond Tutu: either keep pulling people out of a river, or go back and see who the bloody hell pushed them in
Sunak is right that children in Scandinavian countries have more life chances
Imagine the arrogance of arguing that the reason for the difference isn’t that Scandinavian countries invest better in health, children and social care, but that they have national service.
This bold new model will open up a world of opportunity.
It will make sure young people in the UK get the same chance in life as their peers in allies like Sweden, Norway, Denmark and France - which have all recently introduced or announced new forms of national service.

“*extra* jumpers”
I know vulnerable children in Liverpool and Teesside who only have one jumper which was given to them. A lovely gorgeous toddler I’m thinking of only had a Christmas jumper from a charity which she wore through the year.
Child poverty is grotesque.
When I worked at Wrexham Maelor Hospital in 2004, Ronaldo used to drop in, without any press/media, to visit a teenager who was dying from leukaemia. Just saying.

This absolutely is not the forum for people to speculate about the characteristics of the babies and families who were victims of this heinous crime and cover up. Some of the parents are likely on Twitter and don’t need to see every man and his dog having these conversations

No, let’s be clear, nurses *were not furloughed*
They worked in horrendous conditions saving other people before going home to look after their own
Many nurses are forced to use foodbanks btw, so you can shove the cake part of the tweet

I think doctors shouldn’t run any elective work on strike days that would usually involve a nurse
We have nurses because they add value to the care we give - they’re *essential*
Running services without them will (a) be substandard and (b) completely undermine the strike

Fairer benefits
Fairer cost of living

1. Sticking to principles is not a “revolt”. I never in my life apologised if I don’t mean it. I tell my daughters the same

podcast. Ian vividly described links between poverty and health. A must listen segment for everyone! Coming soon on
give me ONE good reason why we would prioritise cozying up to bankers over universal free school meals for children
Why universal? (1) remove stigma, (2) costs less than means testing, (3) cut offs are too low and (4) parents can reinvest in their kids
@IanByrneMP
Without hesitation I endorse

I’ve been told by several mums that the use of the term “mum” in clinical practice is seen very much by mothers as us saying “don’t worry dear, we don’t need to know your name” …
and even if we don’t mean to , it’s perceived as “just mum”.
Really important
Stop using “mums”
@mariacaulfield
- it’s one of terms many hate most when used in health care. HCWs ruin it as a term for new parents by using it as an act of condescension and peppered within various bits of obstetrics violence (and this continues when child goes into hospital)
Excellent work by
@asthmalunguk
Thanks
@swoolnough
for being so tenacious with this
Asthma attacks in more than 1m people linked to UK cost of living rationing
It’s abundantly clear that children are better than adults, and would make better decisions about practically every binfire in the world today - they’d ban landfill sites, end wars, and make the world a loving caring place.
They’d just get it right.
Because they’re class.
On my 26.2 mile jolly, I saw beautiful countryside, stunning coastline, and then some parts of Bootle with disgusting air, and a docker’s strike.
I had a LOT of time to think about how I’m proud of our environment and our people
both deserve better than the Tories
#ToriesOut
10 And living in poverty fundamentally changes the molecules in your DNA. Let that sink in.
Epigenetic changes associated with poverty change the very way in which your frigging DNA works. Being poor is shackling children from before they are even born
Without doubt
@trussliz
has done a horrendous morning’s work, showing herself up as an ill-prepared chancer on local radio
However it HAS shown the importance of local radio, local presenters, and local approaches to politics and that’s a good and overdue thing
Dumping toxic and carcinogenic crap where people live is not acceptable
The fact we do this shows how little respect our government has for our residents, and our children.
We shouldn’t have to say this in 2022 🤦🏽♂️
#StopTheStink
@SandraLeeMD
What an arrogant, old-fashioned and disrespectful thing to say
Its 2020 and some doctors (none that I work with) still underestimate and undermine nurses.
I have a nurse in *literally* every clinic I do, because they know different things to me and have different skills.
As we enter bronchiolitis season I’m looking forward to a plethora of new RCTs with results showing that hypertonic saline doesn’t work, and that HFNC is no better than LFNC, but concluding that we should use these nonetheless
Some of the biggest names in respiratory paediatrics, globally, are dismayed/angry at the societal/political threats to the lungs of children
Privilege to coauthor this
European Respiratory Review: Social determinants of lung health are of pivotal importance across the life course and across the world. Political action is essential to address these, and thus improve adult lung health and all-cause morbidity and mortality.
WATCH THIS SPACE!
Later today
@AlderHey
will be sharing our clinical guidance for medical management of children admitted with COVID-19.
It’s about being sensible and pragmatic, and about involving parents in caring for their kids. It’s not about using drugs that dont work.
Delighted to be running this study with the absolute dream team!
#asymptomatic
- we want children with
#asthma
to live their best life and we need research to help that happen
Childhood hunger is an issue that should transcend politics. Few would disagree that one of our most basic human responsibilities is to ensure children have enough to eat.
The message is right, the picture is wrong
Please
@SWLNHS
, change this to a brown inhaler, but thanks for the important message
SHORT ACTING BRONCHODILATORS ARE NOT PREVENTER THERAPIES IN ASTHMA
Hospital services across South West London are under pressure this week due to weather conditions and the junior doctors strike. We're seeing higher numbers of people coming in with breathing difficulties and older people who are dehydrated. Find out more:

Entire classes of school entry children are under Speech and Language therapy. They simply can’t speak.
We’ve been saying this for literally years.
Our country hates children, and has no regard for their present or future situations.
educational consequences of child poverty are just as heinous as physical ones
Children’s opportunities are ripped away because of the circumstances in which they are born
Education is a human right - and an effective way out of poverty
#EnoughIsEnough
It’s not just about MORE GPs, it’s about distribution
For every child registered to a GP in the richest IMD decile, a GP in the least rich decile has 6… (these are kids with more chronic and acute problems). other factors eg n of elderly but inverse care law clear to see
Our

editorial on the impact of COVID-19 on child poverty and well-being.
We must act now before children get left behind
They aren't the face of the pandemic, but will be hit hard
This December 10,000 children will die from HIV in Africa (1 every 5 minutes)
People in the US and UK who call post-COVID immune dysfunction “airborne AIDS” should consider how utterly disrespectful they are being to the avoidable suffering and death of these children
My 2022-25 priority areas for the Lab-to-Life Child Health Applied Data Research Group (I co-lead with
@clairej32
@AlderHeyInnov
):
1 universal free school meals
2 landfill
3 parent champions
4 wealth inequality
5 poverty-proof paediatrics
6 poverty and childrens rights
People in the least wealthy decile spend, from every £ in pocket after housing:
**70 p on food (ie nutrition according to Govt guidelines)
**70 p on fuel
i.e. £1 is meant to stretch to £1.40 *just on eating and heating*
It’s immoral that we prioritised saving rich folks cash
I’ve got real concerns about Wes Streeting’s plans for primary care
We should invest in services and focus on retaining staff, build MDTs, improve the interface between primary/secondary care and end poverty
Anything else just shifts the problem round the system
Absolutely. Buzzing.

These guys are REAL heroes and they dont even know it - their hard work and passion keeps families afloat, and dignity intact, and here's a thread about the importance of this:
Charging anything for people to access the NHS , however “small”, will only exacerbate the disgraceful inequalities that are worsening before our eyes.
This suggestion is immoral
‘The NHS at the moment is an all you can eat buffet’
Dr Dean Eggitt tells
#Newsnight
a small charge is needed in the NHS to be used as a ‘disincentive to contact a service’
Huge news
The amazing community who live around this disgusting landfill have deserved some proper action for such a long time
They’ve fought, and fought, with dignity and skill and it’s been a privilege to watch them
#StopTheStink
Walleys Quarry landfill has been issued with a suspension notice by the Environment Agency.
It requires the operator to take immediate action to remove the risk of serious pollution and to stop accepting and disposing waste, except for waste which doesn’t add to the odour.
A friend told me she didn’t accept free school meals at school.
She pretended to have an eating disorder, and that’s why she wasn’t eating - it was easier than explaining why she got free school meals
The stigma of child poverty is the machinery of lifelong inequality
I don’t trust many MPs, regardless of party.
I’ve met some good ones though
This guy
@IanByrneMP
is the *absolute pick of the bunch*. He cares about children and families, and is willing to stick his neck out when others recoil.

Middle-aged wets moaning about nurses’ work-ethic is so pathetic
“Grr they made a TikTok. I have to wear a mask and can’t go to the pub😡”
Try wearing PPE & staying at a bedspace for a shift. While you forage for apples, some nurses will need to use a foodbank on the way home
