Day 1 in the new job. Delighted to join the team &look forward to helping shape health & care services for the future with brilliant
@TheKingsFund
colleagues. Arriving from a patient facing charity, where many aren't getting access to care they need, I know how much this matters.
🚨🫁 I’m pleased that the much-needed expansion of ULEZ is going ahead today, as planned. This is a milestone moment for public health in the city and cleaning up London’s toxic air. Expanding ULEZ across the whole city will help protect the lung health of millions of people.
Very excited to be joining
@lunguk
&
@asthmauk
as CEO. I look forward to being part of a team committed to making real change for the 12m people in the UK affected by lung disease.
Today is my first day as Chief Executive of
@asthmauk
and
@lunguk
. I feel so privileged to be joining a charity dedicated to supporting the 12 million people in the UK affected by lung disease. It’s been great starting to meet the team!
🧵 Today, I’m really proud to let you know that we have a new name and look – and a strategy to tackle the unacceptable state of lung health in the UK. We are Asthma + Lung UK
@asthmalunguk
. We are the UK charity fighting for your right to breathe.
After three incredible years at
@asthmalunguk
I’ll be leaving at the end of the year to become the CEO of
@TheKingsFund
. It’s been a huge privilege to lead this remarkable organisation - a lifeline to so many people with lung conditions.
Three years ago, I started my first day as CEO of
@asthmalunguk
. Today is my last day at the charity and I am so proud of all that has been achieved across this remarkable organisation for people living with lung conditions. 🧵
🧵In a landmark moment in the fight for clean air, I’m delighted that
@MayorofLondon
has announced plans to further expand
#ULEZ
. Dirty air is a health emergency, and this will help protect lungs and save lives across the capital.
🚨An important decision. Clean air zones reduce air pollution, which stunts lung growth, causes lung cancers, exacerbates asthma, COPD and a raft of other lung diseases (and more). A good day for lung health 🫁🌎❤️🩹
I’ll be sad to leave my brilliant colleagues
@CR_UK
. So proud of all we’ve achieved since I joined in 2005. We know so much more about cancer & how to effectively treat it than we did. We’ve made significant progress to help others now & in the future
My letter in
@thetimes
today. The new government has a fantastic opportunity to drive forward much needed, much discussed & reviewed, reform on social care. It should take it ⬇️
By accepting a takeover bid from big tobacco firm PMI, Vectura has sold out millions of people living with lung disease & chosen to prioritise short-term financial gain over people’s health. We have written to govt reminding them not to engage with Vectura on p/health policy 🫁🔽
Philip Morris has secured agreement of 75% shareholders of therapeutic inhaler company Vectura for controversial takeover Directors give unanimous approval.
🧵 Today marks one year since we become
@asthmalunguk
. I’m so proud of everything we have achieved so far and can’t wait to see what we can do in the future. We are determined to transform lung health for all 🫁🌿
Yesterday’s vigil on eve of Ella Kissi-Deborah’s 18th birthday a chance to remember & celebrate the amazing legacy she’s creating. Over 1,400 a year die from an asthma attack in UK & many 000’s from toxic air. It doesn’t have to be this way.

🚨🧵Absolutely delighted by today’s UK Government announcement to ban cigarettes for the next generation by gradually increasing the smoking age. This is a very welcome move that will protect generations to come from developing lung conditions caused by this deadly addiction.
Having said goodbye to my brilliant
@CR_UK
colleagues, I can’t wait to join
@asthmauk
and
@lunguk
on Tuesday. A final couple of days hanging out with the gang in the meantime
🚨Today I’ve written to the new PM
@trussliz
expressing
@asthmandlunguk
’s deep concerns about how the
#CostOfLiving
crisis will affect people with lung conditions. There are millions of people across the UK living with a lung condition like asthma or COPD who are very worried.
Great to hear
@wesstreeting
talk about tackling the social determinants of lung ill-health including mouldy housing, tobacco & toxic air. Delighted to hear confirmation that Labour will introduce a new clean air act, important element of improving lung health
#LabourConference23
Very good to talk to
@JuliaHB1
this morning. We need to get cancer services back to near normal, so that early detection and excellent treatment is available for all
Cancer Research UK's Sarah Woolnough tells Julia urgent referrals for cancer have fallen 75 per cent since the coronavirus outbreak began: "People are heeding the stay home message a little too much if they suspect they have cancer."

🚨Lung health care in the UK is in crisis. Today we've published a major report detailing the challenges & costs; hundreds of thousands not receiving tests to accurately confirm a diagnosis of asthma, COPD or another lung condition, patchy basic care & high hospitalisation rates
Commenting on the

Delighted to talk to
@BBCr4today
this morning about the stark differences in lung health across the country & why we need to tackle the underlying causes, ensure people get the right diagnosis and good treatment, and invest in research & innovation.
Hundreds of thousands of Londoners in outer London live with asthma, COPD and other lung conditions, including thousands of children with asthma. There’s a strong link with deprivation. ULEZ will help all of them - and everyone else - breathe cleaner air. 🫁⬇️
Today marks one year since I became CEO at
@asthmauk
and
@lunguk
– the UK’s lung charity. I came into post in December 2020, at a time when the millions of people living with lung disease needed the charity more than ever.
Our new research at
@asthmalunguk
shows that children living in London’s most deprived boroughs are at greater risk of an asthma attack when they return to school.
At
@asthmalunguk
we are passionate about tackling
#AirPollution
so it was great to read my children this lovely
@Usborne
book by
@KatieDaynes2
. Featuring a little boy who has asthma affected by air pollution, I'm proud that one of our
@asthmalunguk
nurses offered their knowledge.
Wonderful to join the celebration for
@MichaelMarmot
this evening, in recognition of his Companion of Honour. We’re so proud to have him as our
@asthmalunguk
President & try to live his philosophy in our work, transforming lung health by tackling inequalities 🫁💪
Back to
#homeschooling
. Asked 5 year old if he could be persuaded to have a shower as it's a school day, 'Nah mum, my teacher can't smell me through the computer.' Can't fault the logic but it could be a long few weeks in this house.
🚨A critical study discussing exposure to air pollution and the development of lung cancer.
Thanks to Charlie and team, we know much more about why air pollution exposure causes lung cancers🫁
The time for bolder action on air pollution is now ⬇️🌱🌍
Referrals for suspected cancer have plummeted and screening services are paused. This means around 2,700 cancers are not being diagnosed each week. We are going to need to work very hard for patients as part of the recovery plan - to diagnose and treat as best we can
👇Very important front page today: 2,700 cancers missed each week.
''You begin to see the unintended consequences. You've got people not seeking help and screening has been paused. So you're not detecting cancers early in the way you would like to.''
@swoolnough
@CR_UK
We’re working with NHS and leading cancer charities to produce information for cancer patients on coronavirus. We are expecting to have signoff any time now. In the mean time do call the support line if you have questions and we’ll try to help 0808 2080 888
Great to talk to
@itvlondon
today about the importance of clean air measures. 650,000 people live with asthma and COPD across London & toxic air is a major trigger for many asthma attacks & lung flare ups. Cleaner air is a priority and it’s good for everyone’s health 🫁
🚨🧵 Around the world, more women than men have asthma. They experience significantly higher numbers of asthma attacks, and they’re more likely to die from them. Their working lives are also disproportionately impacted by living with the condition.
#WomenWithAsthma
A pleasure to speak to
@OwainWynEvans
for a
@BBCTheOneShow
film on yesterday about air pollution. As a charity we’re very keen to raise awareness of the impact of toxic air on lung health, the 'invisible threat', so great to be able to shine a spotlight on this issue.
🚨🫁 We
@asthmalunguk
are absolutely delighted that the
@MayorOfLondon
has listened to our campaigners. The expansion of the
#ULEZ
is a huge win for everyone’s lungs.
Cleaner air is coming to outer London.
Today I’m announcing that we’re expanding the
#ULEZ
London-wide in a move that will bring cleaner air to *5 million* more Londoners. Here’s why ⬇️
The proposed PMI takeover of
@VecturaGroup
is unacceptable in every possible way. Along with representatives from more than 20 organisations, I wrote to the
#Vectura
Board today to urge them to reject the bid. They've decided to recommend, so now it's over to the shareholders.
Delighted to be at Westminster Abbey representing
@asthmalunguk
to celebrate
#NHS75
. A particular thanks to our wonderful respiratory colleagues across the NHS & the
@asthmalunguk
clinical team who often split their time between the NHS & charity work 🙏🫁
🚨🫁Tomorrow is
#WorldCOPDDay
🌎and our shocking new report reveals that as many as 46,000 people have missed out on a diagnosis of COPD because of the pandemic. It is a tragedy that people are not getting the treatment they need to maintain a good quality of life 1/2
🧵🚨Asthma is a serious condition that can have a devastating impact on people’s lives. Every year
@asthmalunguk
releases its annual asthma survey of thousands of people living with the condition, and I’m sad to say this year’s is one of our most shocking yet.
🚨💉Really pleased to see interim JCVI guidance suggesting all those on flu jab list should receive a booster COVID jab. We’ve been working hard to make case along with thousands of our supporters. If confirmed, fantastic news for many millions with asthma ⬇️🫁🙌🏻
We’re delighted that the UK government has listened to our campaign and the thousands of you who backed it. This interim advice suggests people with asthma on the free flu jab list would be offered the added protection of a COVID booster jab if rolled out.
🌎🚨We are in Glasgow! We're telling the world about the urgent need to
#ClearTheAir
. Head to the green zone if you're at
#COP26
to chat to the team & share your story. Air pollution is an invisible threat but it's one that needs tackling now
@rosamund_ElsFdn
@10DowningStreet
It’s the start of

Magical SE London sunset as I come to end of week one at
@asthmauk
and
@lunguk
. Feel very full of information! Thanks to wonderful team for making me feel so welcome. Even more excited about future and making positive difference for all those with a lung condition.

Today's high air pollution alert in London is a reminder that the air we breathe is not as clean as we want or need. I talked to the metro about why I support expanding the ULEZ & why bold action to tackle toxic air is so important 🫁🌿
🚨Really important story out today🚨 Half of those with asthma who should have received an early COVID 💉vaccination didn't, because the criteria was too difficult for GP systems to search for. We are URGENTLY calling on the Government to consider using the flu jab list to

conference to present
@asthmalunguk
’s bold, new strategy to transform lung health. For too long lung conditions have been side-lined and underfunded. At

we are fighting for a world where everyone breathes with healthy lungs.
The Ultra Low Emission Zone is driving 'sustained' improvements in air quality. That's good news for health and the millions of Londoners now breathing cleaner air 🫁🌎⬇️
We
@TheKingsFund
fully support the smokefree legislation coming before Parliament today. It’s good for health - will prevent future addiction & disease, with all the associated misery - & widely supported by the public.
We won’t have a normal Christmas & to suggest otherwise is unhelpful. Millions with asthma not currently eligible for a COVID booster but could be if the flu jab list was used to capture those currently being missed. A simple, helpful measure to protect many 🫁
@10DowningStreet
It was a pleasure to join supporters and MPs to unveil Asthma + Lung UK at the UK Parliament today! Brilliant to talk about how we can transform lung health and focus on better understanding, research, treatment and support.

🔬Lung conditions are the third biggest killer in the UK, yet only 2% of public funding is spent on respiratory research and innovation. We can't afford for clinical trials to suffer, neither can the people with lung conditions.
🚨Important analysis published today. If you live in poverty, you're less likely to live a healthy life, more likely to live with greater illness, struggle to access timely treatment, and die earlier. We need a societal - not just a health - response 👇
🧵Today we published our analysis, commissioned by
@jrf_uk
, which reveals that people living in poverty find it harder to live healthy lives, harder to access

services, live with greater illness and die earlier than the rest of the population.
This is so powerful. Shining a light on the experience of millions, but gets barely any airtime.
Social care, and the experience of carers, urgently needs more attention & policy action. Here's hoping this sparks further conversation⤵️
Caring isn’t just my family's story, it is the story of millions, caring for each other, dealing with tough times, and keeping going with love.
Sharing our story hasn't been easy, but it's important. It's time to bring carers' experiences into the light.

Air quality monitoring isn’t where it needs to be. At
