Ronaldo 06-14 was arguably the defining player of this era. No player revolutionised his position and spawned generations of similar, albeit lesser players the way he did. Totally revolutionised how wingers are seen and play.

Gabriel Martinelli has to be Arteta's greatest coaching victory for me. This transformation into the level of player that he is now, capable of threatening the goal directly, creating from wide, combining etc. Is obscene. (1/n)

Southgate should have run Rashford-Saka. Right hand side creative focus to allow Saka to be the hub and drag the opps across before switching. Use of minimal width because you want Rashy inside more, running at midfielder/CB, getting shots off, not wide in isos vs the fullback.

There is so much of Suarez about him, the intrinsic technique and skill combined with uncoordinated body movements that makes it look so bizzare at times, lacking in the clean motion and quality. It's like his mind moves faster than his body can go at times... (2/n)

He basically created the role of creative, heavy PnP, output heavy (goal getting) wide outlets. Just think... Salah, Mane, Rashford, Sterling, Martinelli, Vinicius etc. All spawned after his dominance, having watched him on the big stage for years and learned from him.

Not even Messi managed to impact and reshape how players in his role played this way. Every winger now is judged on their physicality, speed, ball striking, ability to act as outlets and attack the box while possessing some wide creativity. Cristiano truly changed a generation.

Ten Hag deserves so much credit. He's been slaughtered all week for being "idealistic" and "naive", but he has come into this game, sacrificed his philosophy by playing a hyper intense midblock and avoided playing out of the back while dropping big names. Superb from him.

If u look at the careers of Rodri, Fabinho pre LFC or City: They are both tall, technically excellent players who are - risk averse - press resistant, - wide angled passing wise - filled in at CB (fabinho also at RB) down to thek to scanning and intercept , not chasing the ball

So many of the TL's opinions are axiomatically bizzare. If Arsenal beat Newcastle, they and Arteta are great, etc. Now that they lost, they shouldn't have given him the contract, etc. If your opinion fluctuates so much on single matches.. it isn't really worth listening to.
So many narratives change if we get T4.

The Affect Of Youth Footballing On Players (MY THOUGHTS): players instincts are built from a young age. touch, technique, controls, scanning etc. U wont see manager's change fundamentals of a player, only help them become better at implementing strengths/mitigating weaknesses
Lefties have a harder time using their right 100%. It's why you don't see LBs covering the RB spot but you do the opposite.

I don't think people understand that you can't have penetration from everywhere in midfield. You need to play passes, keep territory, probe the defence before picking the lock at the right time. Pass selection & risk averse-ness is a must in atleast one of a midfield 3. (3/n)

PSG confound me. How are you - based in one of if not THE biggest talent hubs in Europe, - the biggest, best and richest club in that talent hub, - the rest of the league are pretty skint comparatively And yet you don't abuse and utilise it to the hilt??

Maignan will officially become the Serie A Golden Glove winner with the most clean sheets in the 21/22 season. This despite missing 2 months of action. Mike Maignan, the best goalkeeper in Serie A 🤴🏿🦅

You then factor Partey, who is one of the most risk heavy dm's in Europe. Looking to manipulate angles and penetrate at every opportunity. Even xXhaka is constantly drifting and moving, playing with verticality and now, arriving in the box more than ever. (4/n)

Look at the distribution at 0:05... There is a reason Sheffield United suffered so much when Deano left and came back to Manchester in 20/21. He is really talented bar a few flaws and really needs to revive his career either at United or at another club. Easy UCL calibre keeper

Arteta is better than Xavi. No Debate On the pitch wise itself there are traits making Arteta superior, but the amount of storms of field that Arteta had had to deal with, Plus the starting level of the squads both managers inherited make him unquestionably better right now.

This is a bad move. Likelihood is that United will want to move him on in a couple of years, but won't be able to because he is now on a long term contract with massive wages. Completely Hasty and Unnecessary Decision

Spurs are too functional. They don't have enough technical skill, ball handling and general quality and consistency. The only drop of ingenuity, innovation and play making in their team is Kulusevski. That's not good enough for a team looking to move up from 4th. (1/n)

First of all, Zidane isn't a midfielder. Second of all, he is widely overrated. He's one of those footballers who is considered to be better than his actual level due to a few overly glorified big game performances.

This thread includes a key point in terms of what I've thought about the full back role, especially when considering on ball concepts, greater emphasis of high pressing and using the touchline as a trap than before Two feet and passes back into the centre from Fullbacks (👇👇)

It's not uncommon for the near-side FB to play the ball down the line when they receive it in the build-up phase. It could be said that this is the preferred option; to go around the high block, given it carries relatively low risks and is effective when executed w/ decisiveness.

One of the other reasons behind Naglesmann's minimal width and the structures he employs is also to draw opposition and create scope for dynamic transitions. The word dynamic transitions is crucial, specifically due to the lesser emphasis on timing and on ball specificity (1/n)

This is also a commonality with Rice and Tchouameni. Both are long legged, tall midfielders who - play at wide radius due to either, being double footed or nimble - press resistant - risk averse - rice played CB before midfield. I wonder whether this is the the trend to look

I'm tired of these Maguire narratives. People constantly meme him, scapegoat him for bad team performances and make his good performances out to be nothing when he is at United... And then pretend like there is some drastic difference for England.

An unspoken issue in United's recruitment is the lack of "best in class" players. To win the biggest titles needs best in class/potentially best in class players, and bar Luke Shaw, I wouldn't say anyone else at United is undoubtedly amongst the best in their position.

DdG will be the litmus test of EtH's Man United for me. Distribution's just not good enough. It will probably improve in a possession team with better emphasis on involving the gk in build up, spacing etc. but it still will be unsatisfactory until we replace him. Has to be sold

Man united are a funny club. They historically struggle vs Spanish opposition due to A. Being overzealous and overcommitting B. Lacking structural solidness in defense. Both exposing UTD to Spanish teams on ball principles (attract and bypass pressure, hence flying into space)
