(Not) sorry, I don’t buy the ‘Mainoo is keeping it simple’ tags. Being the youngest person on the pitch, receiving back to goal as the deepest MF, away at Goodison, is not ‘simple.’ Turning on the ball there is not ‘simple.’ It’s only simple to describe—not to execute.

Ode to Scott McTominay: I started writing about football, weaving arguments in essays, because of Scott. In 2021, data experts on X [dot] com argued that McTominay should be dropped for Donny in the XI. Scott earned his for place. In 2022, they said McTominay should be dropped

Why didn’t Walker press McTominay when he received on the turn? Because Rashford’s expected threat is as lethal as his actual threat. The same reason Doku was skeptical about taking on AWB — expected clamping.

McTominay’s reach and finish for his 1st. Immaculate. Not many could’ve manufactured a shot off from that situation. Yet, someone will sit down on proclaim, ‘he’s not technical enough’ — as if ‘technique’ isn’t multi-dimensional & an emergent quality.

How to analyse United’s build up issues 101: If Wan-Bissaka played, he’s the issue because he can’t pass & is a pressing trigger. If Wan-Bissaka didn’t play, United need a first phase midfielder to resolve the build up. Rinse & Repeat.

Antony has scored 1 PL goal since October 2022. In that same timeframe: • Rashford scored 13. • Garnacho scored 2 with significantly less minutes. • Sancho, with a three-month sabbatical, scored 4. Yet, some football mastermind deduced that Antony’s the most useful forward.

S. McTominay changed roles & played deeper after Mount came on — ended the game with: 58 touches 38/45 passes 5/6 ground duels 2/4 aerial duels (won most duels in the match) 2 shots in the box That’s why ‘pass completed’ is nigh useless when you refuse to contextualize role.

Whenever one-footed players pull off something special, we hear the phrase: ‘you know what they are going to do, but you can’t stop it.’ For Arjen Robben, the key was his upright, deceiving posture + immaculately timed power-step. These frames are less than .30 seconds apart.

Composure is the most defining trait of elite finishers. Any player with ice-in-their-veins kinda composure is a good finisher — or at least, has potential to be. Two decades ago, most would be CFs. Today, because of the nature of the game, we nurture them at DM or CB.

A team’s in a slump. Incoherent strategy has left them with one reliable win condition: a youngster with a raw, direct skillset. Coaches, each desperate to win, exclusively indulge this talent’s game-breaking traits — at the expense of others. This is Rashford’s United story.

I don’t see many pro. players attempting this knee-to-ground lunge — especially outside the box. It’s a tad risky in that it’s impossible to recover from if you’re beat, but the sheer pace & abruptness make it potent. Yet, it’s not an approach or move you often see.

The simplest case for buying (many) good midfielders is that they can play other positions. Good DMs can play CB. Good CMs can play AM. Good AMs can play wide. You get enough of them, and injury streaks will never be a worry.

This is the kind of player who can diffuse the final-stand tendencies of United’s offense. He allows other players breathe: good weight on his passes, not playing his teammates into pressure (neutral posture on release), and receives well across most angles/heights.

Inside the box and under pressure, Zirkzee gets shots off better than Rasmus. I think that anyone proclaiming that he doesn’t ‘generate shots or score goals’ should ditch the charts and use their eyes. Nothing about his mechanics in the box suggests that he suffers to let one

Thoughts: – Ten Hag, since last season, demonstrated that he doesn't value a strict rest-defence as much as his colleagues. (There're pros & cons). – United will perpetually contend with large spaces. – Hence why performances are/were inextricably linked with Casemiro's form.

My case for Martinez at LB: — FB is a utility position. A ‘good’ FB in one setup performs very different core functions from another. — Martinez is a good footballer & possibly the most secure in that zone. Good footballers deliver across board. A ~10-metre difference in set

@joeladejola I don’t think Martinez is mobile enough for LB, although he also lacks the athleticism to be world class at CB. Could only be considered word class because of his ability on the ball.

Mali U-17’s Sekou Kone (2006) with strong showings at AFCON & WC. Engine. Commands opp. & possession with his body (esp. on ⚽️ reception). Agile: claw-like interventions with his long legs. Level-headed in duels. His 1st-time release is crisp. Scuffs it with more (pre)touches.

Kobe Mainoo showed the ability to receive & turn under pressure in midfield that England require to feed their World class players Bellingham Foden & Kane 1-3-4-3 formation allowed the freedom for Foden to move inside interchange positions & combine with Bellingham & Mainoo

• Genetics. • Emulation. • Same development coach(es). • Strict dev. regime: perhaps trialled other athletic endeavors at same interval. Just brainstorming possible reasons why he and Jude have such similar mechanics on the pitch: shielding, release, dribbling.

Poetic that Ugarte 60 million move could only be completed after McTominay was sold. Because the Scotsman would have benched him by December — as he’d done with all the other ‘contenders.’ Talent never hides.

Ode to Scott McTominay: I started writing about football, weaving arguments in essays, because of Scott. In 2021, data experts on X [dot] com argued that McTominay should be dropped for Donny in the XI. Scott earned his for place. In 2022, they said McTominay should be dropped

See how the technical staff deployed McTominay yesterday: on the last line alongside or ahead of R. Højlund. Does it look like he was on the pitch to ‘receive from the backline’? Then, you have ‘analysts’ spewing nonsense about him not ‘midfielding.’

I personally like my forwards complaining when their runs aren’t found: demand more + gesture. Next time, the player on the ball will bump your stake in the decision-making. Goal-scoring has/will never been a sympathetic affair.

I can’t believe we, for two months, entertained the idea that United were playing bad football because of Scott McTominay.

Not many players in the sport can generate the power and placement Rashford did for that goal. It's a shame he doesn't shoot more often.

Spurs have non-regulars combining with starters, appreciating & reacting to runs, and getting the ball in dangerous spaces. Meanwhile, teams elsewhere are complaining about insufficient time to rehearse offensive sequences. Same intent. Different training methods.

I maintain that United signing & being reliably linked with this many 🇳🇱 & 🇳🇱-based players over the past 2 years is concerning. There are conditions where this would be palatable. But the track record of major 🇳🇱 imports & relative quality in the market don’t justify them.

Antony cost United 100 million Euros, but when you factor 2nd-order costs (development mins. of better, in-house wingers, compensatory sale of Elanga, pressure on other forwards), that number is an understatement. One of the most expensive decisions in the club’s recent history.

Trevoh Chalobah for sub-30m is still an most obvious 2nd CB recruit for United. The club should really be leaving this window with one of those cut-price deals — having come in needing 2/3 CBs. Other suitors will make a late-window push to further drive that price down.

Lisandro Martinez has one of the most precise timings at this level. There aren’t many active players who balance aggression & placement of tackles like him. Especially remarkable when you consider his margins. Commits like he’s lost his head, composes himself once it’s won.

That’s the same angle Solanke was assisted from. The issue is clearly not that Højlund doesn’t get into good positions.

The identity of successful teams depends on its best players & the kind + spread of quality in-house. Pep rings this every presser, but we block our ears & focus on the fanciful output: tactics —Good XI = Good tactics —Wide spread = Sustainable tactics

Olise was my preferred RW target for United 2 years ago (see next tweet). - Strong, reliable final-ball. Will take set-pieces. - Maverick with strong fundamentals. Takes initiative outside scope of set-up. - He was a better fit than Antony – and reportedly available for less.
