Grain producer cropping over a dune swale, red, acidic sand. Striving for higher water use efficiency through the use of soil amelioration & ag-tech. NSS Chair
Macdon FD1 owners. Wasn’t going to post this but another fire started yesterday by an FD1 at 150hrs. Same cause as our fire. Bearing opposite hyd motor on centre belt. It’s time
@MacDon
addressed the problem rather than suggesting our local dealer is the only one with problem.
Looking for some harvest help if anyone in drought wants to get out of their patch. Send yourself, sons or daughters. Happy to teach youth or learn from the wise. Modern gear- only a little idea
Winter wheat is in and just finishing up the canola. Earliest we have ever started at Bute SA, but I think thanks to the hard work of researchers/breeders we can control flowering window irrespective of plant date. Time for some family time over Easter before an Anzac Day rain.🤞
A big shout out to
@lachiekoch1
who fresh faced, straight out of school came to us as a harvest casual in 2019. 5 years later and he’s making his way home to take on the family farm. We will miss having him around and he’s had an everlasting impact on what we do here!
I’m a big believer there’s no such thing as good luck just a combination of preparation and opportunity. But frost takes the cake this year for bad luck. Swales stem frosted halfway through grainfill. Spaded dunes untouched. Thanks to
@OsterCharlie
for mowing it down
Anyone else frustrated with how the fert industry operates.I was looking forward to getting fresh urea straight off the boat,it seems this new stuff is absolute rubbish. Strength of mid 3’s and all small sized. Time for minimum standards and grades to be set, lucky it’s cheap 🙄

and hell it’s dry. Moisture probe hasn’t had a hit since December. Driest summer/autumn I have seen in my short farming career. Here’s to a wet winter!
Some great advice from the UniSA boys has lead to building this weapon. Ripper from

and custom inclusion plates fabricated by WMF. Design critical to hit our 200-300mm acid throttle. Here’s to hoping it works.
Scepter getting to the pointy end. 210mm for the growing season here, tracking for decile 2. A season with a lot of promise for a wet finish but spring currently running decile 1
A few photos in anticipation for the release of this weeks KIDSDE report. Like the WASDE this analyst only focused on the best bits so interpret with caution.
All colours breakdown but there’s no point having the biggest header in the world when you have the slowest same day delivery of parts. 5 days down, 4 days later still no parts

3 weeks later than 2020 but the wheels are turning. Very dry autumn here at Bute but Scepter going in with a sniff of getting a strike from some subsoil moisture 🤞
Nothing we didn’t know at harvest time but a great visual of why windrowing still has a place in our canola program. LHS windrowed, RHS direct headed. Shattering loss between windrow timing and waiting for the crop and stalks to dry enough not to plug machine
Took a break from harvest to demo the Grizzly Tiny. Nothing tiny about this weapon, well built bit of kit. Incorporating lime to 300mm to alleviate subsoil acidity. Thanks for organising
@s_cottyT
Big shout out goes SD Mechanical, had a truck drop a clutch bearing at lunch time picking up a load of fert. Gearbox out, new clutch in and the truck is home ready for another load tomorrow. Can’t beat that for service.

44y90 exploding out the blocks, Trident sown 10 days later to pair/optimise flowering time still in the starting gates. It’s hard to think there won’t be large yield differences.
Thanks to
@gjeast1
I got to have a play with this weapon this week. Very high capacity machine and interesting to see CEMOS auto vs Intellisense and the differences in limiting factors. Good time to buy with 50 percent off with Black Friday sales I hear
@squig1971
Been waiting all year for planet barley to show up. Compass and fathom seem to have had its measure all year. A little late but I think it’s here. Compass L, Planet R. Respective crops in background
Free apps go! It’s not about spending $1k/year for subscriptions to apps. Off the shelf free apps can make your life so much easier on farm.We have found OneNote great for shared notes, Life360 for harvest tracking & logistics & Google Sheets + Maps for shared spreadsheets & maps

Same day, same crop, 3 years apart, 2015 LHS, 2018 RHS. Rainfall within 5mm YTD. 2015 the sample didn’t make FEDwheat. 2018 hoping the smaller canopy has a little left in the tank.
Race to the end! With no significant rainfall for over a month, nothing much on the 10 day and only the flag and half of -1 left. It should be an interesting grainfill. 1/3 of the way through. Fortunate to get this one established early but heaven help the late ones (awnpeep)

As an Australian grain grower it is disturbing that I would asked to pay for the fumigation or checking of a shipping container of imported grains. Why should I subsidise someone importing something to compete directly with me in the marketplace. Importers must pay this!
Cropscan 3000h grain analyser providing some very interesting data in the first crop of wheat. Protein coming from the eastern end of paddock. Now for engineers to develop a divide and paddle in the grain tank
VR Fung for canopy closure lentils. The majority looks average and weeks away but by waiting for the majority the highest yielding areas (blue&green) will be diseased out. Will only spray areas with an ndvi of 0.5 and above.
Hey peeps, we are looking for a truck driver for immediate start. Have had a good fella have to scoot home for personal reasons during our busy harvest. If you know anyone that can help us out for 4-6 weeks you’ll be a life safer! Retweets appreciated
Bankers hour crop walk. Longsword left, Bennett right. Sown 30kg/ha on April 6, Scepter sown 5 weeks later beginning to elongate, the winters still tillering. Longsword tall and erect, Bennett flat on the deck. Both getting hungry and may get thirsty too
How’s everyone’s Thunder lentils? Not setting the world on fire here visually. All different plant architecture but usually satellite doesn’t do highlands any favours. Low vigour variety or sensitive to something? Or dodgey seed?
Trial strips when setting up the ripper have stimulated a germination despite no follow up rainfall. Suspect either have included lost barley heads down the subsoil moisture or brought enough moisture up to stimulate a germ. Root mass in inclusion zones looking fab
Scepter left and 12 month old catapult seed right. Testing vigour and germination of seed. Interesting that the catapult that’s 12 months old is firing out the ground faster than the fresh Scepter seed. Catapult in its first generation where as Scepter is in its 6th generation 😐
Whether it’s working out what’s worked in a tough year or just taking a mental health day off farm, come along next Tuesday to the Hart Field Day. With the largest program of any crop walk you’re guaranteed to learn something!
CROPPING IN A CHALLENGING SEASON 🌱
There is no denying it has been a challenging start to the growing season.
With that in mind, the Hart Field Day program for Sep 17 features a series of sessions looking at the impact.

A big few days, a great industry initiative. Learnt plenty from some very clever people across a diverse set of cropping systems. But one commonality over several systems is the attention to detail.

I’m pretty sure I know what this is and I don’t like it. Lone plant in the middle of a lentil stubble. You wonder how it gets there. Can FTR thrive in southern environments or is it just a weed of the north?
Anyone care to comment on the catastrophic fire danger rating tomorrow but no fireban? I always thought catastrophic was a forecasted FDI of over 150! I’m sure I’m missing something but looking at the forecast I’d be expecting a max wind of 25 and temp of 37. FDI approx 35?
Been seeing the chutes on twitter for awhile, took shoulder surgery and getting frustrated in the office to action it. Pity it’s not going to rain 😒🙏🌧 crops looking great here but heavier ground going backwards fast
Cropscan 3000h owners. This tool makes changing crop types a 1minute job vs 15 mins wrestling the awkward hex screws. Should have done it at the start of harvest
Transplanting some of the neighbours resown barley before some rain. Looking to answer some questions of where overwatch residuals are and how much is still active before making the decision on large scale resowing. 🤔
Nearly 50mm for month and the irrigated oats are looking lush. The other 99.9% look good just vertically challanged. Twitter and yield pic location has been found 😅
Taken same day this year but Scepter germination 11days later, currently flagleaf is fully emerged on the mainstream.What we thought was racing last year due to stress seems to be replicating again in a favourable year.Phenology a very interesting beast

Trojan knows something that we don’t. Or that we do know but we aren’t willing to accept. Trojan L (GS45), Catapault R (GS39). Catapault 100mm shorter in height. Both sown April 27. 😳😳😳
An interesting pattern in some struggling lentils. As drill row passes through old row, crop green. As it goes through interrow- crop purple. If moisture stress it’s taking a long time to respond to 17mm last week. Frosty ground although would expect straw row to make frost worse
5mm for July, 15mm for June & Wheat Powdery Mildew thriving on Trojan despite robust fungicide package. The old adage of dry years you can save on fungicide doesn’t ring true here. Looking forward to results from

trials up the road to nut out solutions
@TrengoveSam
Has anyone done any resowing of overwatch country? How has it done as obviously the chemical is still there if crop is not recovering? FMC don’t seem to be returning calls anymore so any experience greatly appreciated. TIA
Patch of group B resistant mustard accumulating on chaff deck rows. Anyone got any innovative ideas without knocking over new crop. Currently looking at mounting tanks to a few foot falcons.
@Rossf93
We are 12months since trading from a Deere, we spray the same speed as always. Deere would do around 600ha to a fuel tank, goldacres will do around 700ha to a fuel tank. Catch is that the Deere had 550L, g6 has a 300L tank. Happy to knock the g6 but fuel isn’t one of them
Trojan knows something that we don’t. Or that we do know but we aren’t willing to accept. Trojan L (GS45), Catapault R (GS39). Catapault 100mm shorter in height. Both sown April 27. 😳😳😳
One positive of having one of the driest June’s (bottom 5 percent) is the amount of cloud free days make it great for imagery. Hopefully we don’t get a good image for the rest of the year 🌧🌧🌧

@Voz_Dennis
NYP dry sown crops are just emerging now on good soils. They are 5 weeks behind optimum sowing date though. At 30kg/day yield penalty from optimum emergence date, without a wet spring we are expecting about a tonne/ha yield penalty. Second driest start in 120 years of records
Frost avoidance trial-Longsword (early grainfill) a quick winter v Bennett (awn peep) a slow winter.Scepter sown a month later (may10) tracking days earlier than LS. With an extra month of root exploration & water transpiration will be interesting to see who wins in the dry

Says my "middle circle" doesn't include any wheat But yet it does. Hes just angry that it's 3cm too far to the left meanwhile ignoring the that the spot he's talking about is receiving MORE rain than what's in that circle
