Short vs long distance runners are completely different physiologically.
Short vs long distance swimmers are about the same.
I was a pro sprinter in the national swimming team but I had filled in for teammates in long distance without too much trouble.
Not possible in running.

Steel can be designed to never fail as long as stresses remain below the endurance limit.

Because steel is too heavy. Give it enough cycles, they fail. However, since we know the stresses & cycles, we can predict when that will happen & design & plan the inspections/maintenance accordingly

I raised this concern to the advisory board in my freshman year at Michigan &, to their credit, they did bring in a prof who gave some courses on production.
There are many (not enough) naval architecture & marine engineer courses but almost none for actual building & repair.
